ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The Millenium is a period of greater challenges as we face the unenviable task of balancing natural resources with the demands of a burgeoning population, economic growth and higher energy consumption. We are facing the brink of becoming unsustainable. The Asian region is expected to contain highest population growth by 2020. As our region develops and the cities grow, we face a state of over-burden, where our resources are strained and our urban areas may be uncomfortable areas to live in. Many have taken initiatives to respond to that challenge with the aim to achieve sustainability and livability.

Such eorts have transformed these cities. This conference provides a platform for sharing and at the same time providing an avenue for us in the EAROPH region to deliberate further on the call for sustainable transformation. Instead of treating sustainability as a narrow ecological question framed by business as usual, this conference will addresses the human condition factor across the integrated domains of economics, ecology, social and culture. The call for social transformation to grow alongside economic and spatial transformation becomes more relevant today and should shape our future cities.

The conference hopes to gather people from all walks of life that have interest in the betterment of human settlements, as the responsibility to act now to work towards a better tomorrow lies within us all.

CONFERENCE SUB-THEMES

Designing Future Cities In designing our future cities, it is important to place the right ingredients towards livability. These ingredients take into account the needs of today’s community to ensure that our cities are comfortable, safe, healthy and inclusive. Cities today are very competitive and city transformation has introduced new skylines and modern buildings, changing the urban landscape and creating new image for them. These pose many local challenges as cities aslo struggle to redene themselves as they search back for their identity. Designing future cities will always remains a debate, as more cities have to regenerate and redevelop to provide for the growing population and growing role as economic centres.

“Social ramications of economic transformation”As more people live in cities, it becomes a mirror of society. The form that economic growth and social change have taken has been critical to the emergence of new growth and social change have taken has been critical to the emergence of new problems in cities. This dismal picture is by no means exclusive to one nation and a more conscious eort is seen to encourage urban regeneration, sosial integration and the development of more livable communities. Local solutions become important where aordable housing, public health, safety and education are as important as employment opportunities and where diversity and cultural values becomes paramount in today’s cities.

Innovative & Technological Solutions for CitiesMany cities take a conscious eort to address the issues of climate change. City’s transformation today seek modern technologies to solve urban problems and issues. The role of technology has always been contested, as far as sustainability is concern, as they are either perceived to be part of the problem or part of the solution. Nevertheless, innovation and technological development is fast growing. To combat the complex issues of the present, technological solutions are expected to play a key role towards mitigating and adapting to the negative impacts of climate change.

Managing Cities Today for TomorrowAs cities play important role in urbanization and globalisation, it has become more complex to manage and administer. City infrastructure and shelter is no longer enough to humanized cities. Today, cities need to be managed according to their unique personality. City managers are faced with the task to create a sense of belonging and to encourage the co-responsibility. This is not only to ensure quality of life but also to bring stability to cities and societies. Hence city management becomes an important ingredient to city transformation.
