RABBI’S MESSAGE We open the Haggadah with the “Ha Lachma ‘Anya” declaration:

This is the bread of affliction which our ancestors ate in the land of Egypt. Let all who are hungry come and eat; let all who are needy come and join our Pesach Seder. Now we are here, next year in the land of Israel. Now we are slaves, next year free people.

The commentary Chasam Sofer asked: Why spend so much time celebrating our Egyptian redemption? After all, now we’re in exile, and cannot enjoy all the benefits of being an elevated, consolidated people. Now we are “slaves”, in the spiritual sense. So what did we gain from being saved from Egypt?

Rabbi Sofer approaches this question from an interesting angle. If you think about the difference between the Egyptian exile and today’s exile, there’s an important difference. In Egypt, the Jews had to remain slaves for a fixed number of years. By telling Avraham that the Jews would be slaves for 400 years, the Jewish people knew that there was a set amount of time that they had to be in Egypt in order for their exile to affect the desired rectification of the people during their formative years.

On the other hand, our exile today does not have a fixed amount of time. We are told in the Talmud that Mashiach can come “today -- if but only you will hearken to His voice” (TB Sanhedrin 98a). Indeed, this is one of Rambam’s Thirteen Principles of Faith (the “Ani Ma’amin”’s): “I believe with a complete faith in the coming of the Messiah. And even though he may tarry, I will nevertheless await his coming every single day.” The Jews of Egypt could not recite this Ani Ma’amin in its present format; they could not say, “I will await the coming of my redemption every single day.” They knew that their exile had to take a certain amount of time, and they were eagerly awaiting the allotted hour. We, on the other hand, have an advantage over our ancestors; our exile can end at any moment, and furthermore, we hold the key to its cessation. This is why our exile is not as bad as the Egyptian exile. In Judaism we have a term called “Pas B’Salo” (literally, “bread in one’s basket”). It means that although a person may lack a certain comfort or pleasure, if one knows that it’s within one’s imminent grasp, the deprivation is easier to endure. Similarly, the knowledge that our redemption can come at any time makes the exile easier to endure.

What is one of the ways to hasten the coming of the Messiah? The Gemara states, “How great is charity, for it hastens the redemption” (T.B. Bava Bathra 10a). This is why we begin the Haggadah with an invitation for the poor and hungry to join us. If we really want our exile to end, we’re going to have to do something to hasten it. Thus, we start our Seder with an effort to hasten our redemption by performing the mitzvah of tzedakah. Perhaps this is also the reason why Ma’os Chitim -- tzedakah for the poor for Passover, is also highlighted as a good mitzvah to perform before Pesach. (Those of you who would like to ensure that others will have wine and matzah at their table this year can always make a donation to the BAYT charity fund.)

Instead of being passive observers of the redemption, let’s be active participants of our own! Do something today to bring Mashiach and may we truly be in Jerusalem next year! Karen and I wish you all a chag kasher v’sameach.

Weekly Halachah R' Mordechai Torczyner -

Am I supposed to put salt on matzah at the Seder?

We are taught to put salt on bread before reciting the berachah, to honour the berachah; refining the bread by adding salt or other foods later in the meal would reflect poorly on the bread used for the berachah. [Note: This is not only a Shabbat or Yom Tov practice; it is a daily practice.]

Various Ashkenazi authorities record a custom of refraining from using salt at the Seder, because (1) matzah is "clean bread" and does not need salt, (2) adding salt would reduce the "poor man's bread" aspect of the seder's matzah and (3) we show love of the mitzvah by refusing to mix in anything else. Some even refrain from salting matzah all through Pesach. On the other hand, others specifically use salt to improve the taste of the matzah, making the mitzvah more attractive. One should follow his family custom.

Regardless of one's custom regarding adding salt, one should keep salt on the table in order to link the food with the salt-laden korbanos brought in the Beis haMikdash.

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT RABBI

The number fifteen plays an integral role in the Chag of Pesach.

The first day of Pesach is the 15th day of Nissan. The descent of the Jewish people to Egypt and their miraculous redemption are described in the first fifteen chapters of the book of Shemos. Beginning with Kadesh and concluding with Nirtzah, there are fifteen parts to the Pesach Seder. Additionally, there are fifteen steps in the classic song of the Seder, Dayeinu.

Fifteen, however, is also the value of the incomplete name of Hashem, י—ה .

By reiterating the number fifteen throughout the Pesach experience, we are expressing the two opposing feelings that each and every one of us is feeling. On the one hand, we praise Hashem for our miraculous redemption from Egypt. At the same time, we recognize that our redemption is still incom-plete. As such, we end the seder with ‘לשנה הבאה בירושלים’ And we pray for the time when Hashem’s name is complete, with the coming of Mashiach, speedily in our י —ה—ו—ה days.

Leora and I wish you a chag kasher v’sameach.

19th ANNUAL EMUNAH SHABBOS PROGRAM

June 13th, 2015 Further details to follow

Message from our co-presidents

Over the past year Sisterhood has been very busy with yoga, knitting, dance parties, special programs and speakers. We have also continued to help fund the mikveh, co-sponsor the Chai Lifeline Shabbaton and run the New Members Welcome Evening. With the help of our main fundraiser, the Purim Mishloach Manot Project, we are able to continue providing these unique activities.

Thank you to our amazing Purim Committee volunteers who worked so hard in organizing this year's mishloach manot, our most successful campaign ever! Thank you to our Purim Chair; Miriam Klein, and Committee Members; Naomi Deutsch, Yael Eis, Ariella Goldstein, Elie Kochman, Karen Rosenzweig and Sarah Dukesz.

One of Sisterhood's newer initiatives, which has been the very popular, is the Women's Kiddush. It takes place several times a year and gives the women an opportunity to socialize, meet new friends, have a bite to eat and relax following davening. The kiddush also provides women a chance to commemorate a birthday, bat mitzvah, birth, yarzheit or just because. Enjoy meeting the women in our shul and support Sisterhood at the same time. If your husband complains that you will not be home in time to set the table, then oh well, time for hubby to learn on which side the napkin goes! If interested, add your name to the next Women's Kiddush, email [email protected].

We love hearing from you! If you have any ideas that you'd like to share, questions, concerns or if you would like to join our amazing group of volunteers email [email protected].

OBLIGATIONS PROCESS Important Information for the 2015-2016 Membership Year!

At BAYT, members only need to complete an Obligations application once every three years so long as the member’s financial circumstances don’t change, which can be confirmed annually by signing a confirmation form. In other words, when an Obligations application is submitted, membership dues would be set for that year and the next two years. Of course, any member who had suffered a downturn in their financial situation is free to submit a new Obligations application and ask for a lower assessment.

If your last application was for 2012-2013, please make sure you pick up an Obligations application from the office or download one from the Shul’s website. If you submitted an application for either last year or the year before, and your financial circumstances have not changed, then you can keep your dues at the same level by filling out a confirmation form. All forms (available on our website) are due no later than Friday, June 6 if you intend to participate in the seating lottery and Friday, August 14th for everyone else.

For any questions, please feel free to contact: Michael Rende – 905-771-1788

would like to be invited to a Seder, please contact [email protected]

PRESENTS: AN EXTRAORDINARY

EVENING OF INTERACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT AND

MENTAL MYSTERY MONDAY, MAY 11TH SEE FLYER FOR DETAILS

MESSAGE FROM LISA BERMAN AND SUZANNE KAYE

The Maddie Leventhal Mikveh Centre has welcomed thousands of women, since it was opened. The Mikveh is open to all Jewish women, regardless of their level of observance, and every effort is made to ensure that everyone is made comfortable in order to enhance their experience.

This year, the Maddie Leventhal Mikveh Centre has focused on a few special projects. The first being our Kallah Service. Any Kallah using our Mikveh is given her own special time, away from the regular Mikveh hours and other Mikveh clients, the Kallah has the opportunity to focus on the spiritual aspect of her wedding preparations in a calm, relaxed atmosphere. All of our Kallahs are attended to by Mercedes Elmaleh, our Kallah Specialist. If requested a Kallah will be guided through her first post wedding mikveh experience. In addition, the Kallahs are given a gift which includes a cosmetic bag filled with all she would need for future mikveh visits and an Aneni book, that has been dedicated to the Maddie Leventhal Mikveh Centre, in loving memory of Renee Aron, beloved wife, mother and Bobba of Issy Aron and the Fihrer, Aron and Kraft families and also by two other anonymous donors as a gift to the Mikveh.

The Mikveh is constantly undergoing review. While the Mikveh is under the halachic auspices of Rabbi Daniel Korobkin, our Mara D’Asrah, and Rabbi Mordechai Scheiner, Rosh Kollel, Kollel Ohr Yosef, the Mikveh follows the guidelines set by the Va’ad. The Mikveh operations are now run by a committee of women. This committee ensures the Mikveh meets the needs of the women of the community, while at the same time ensuring every part of the Mikveh operations is dealt with by the most appropriate person and decisions are made by committee. In addition, Meira Kirzner is available as a tahara specialist to help guide any woman through the mikveh process. An exciting addition to the Mikveh is the launch of the Maddie Leventhal Mikveh Centre website. Any information pertaining to the Mikveh can be accessed by checking out our page at www.mikveh.bayt.ca.

This year too, we have implemented a membership program. By making a one-time donation to the Mikveh, a client gets a year’s access to the Mikveh and certain supplies. The donation is deductible to the maximum allowed by law. This donation may be made on-line or at the Mikveh. Please visit the website to make your donation.

For the last three years, the Mikveh has held a fundraising event. What began as a gathering of women inspired by Mrs. Adina Ribacoff, has grown into a memorable women’s night out. We have learned to ice cupcakes and been taken on a culinary, spiritual journey with Jamie Geller. Generally, the event is held between Pesach and Shavuos, marking the yarzheit of an incredible woman, for whom the Mikveh is named. Mark Monday, May 11th in your calendars for what is promised to be an awesome night, in support of the Mikveh.

We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank Susan Binder for her commitment to the mikveh for more than two decades. Susan dedicated countless hours of her time to ensuring the efficient operation of the Mikveh and devoted her energy to maintain the highest standards. In this zechus, may Susan and her family be blessed with much hatzlacha. The Mikveh would not be the special place that it is without the help of our dedicated attendants who are committed to ensuring this mitzvah be granted the appropriate kedusha while at the same time respecting every woman’s privacy. Orna Moshkovitz, Mercedes Elmaleh, Denise Myerowitz, Deena Mammon and Simy Bitton, take time from their families to devote to our Mikveh. In addition, every night behind the scenes Olga Shatrova and Olga Kotsiubynska, en-sure that supplies are replenished and the Mikveh is kept clean. Our executive Director, Mordechai Bookbinder has supported and assisted with all the Mikveh changes. A huge thank you goes to Noel Fernandes, Ted and Lev for all they do at a moment’s notice to attend to any is-sue. Leslie Lewis, Sylvia Abbou, Karen Zilberberg, Sheindl Belenky, Corinne Broder and Orpaz Gibson are always ready to help us with their warmth and expertise, no matter what the task. The Mikveh would not function as efficiently as it does without all that they do for us.

We look forward to another year of working with and serving the women of the community.

Wishing you and your families a chag kasher v’sameach,

Lisa Berman and Suzanne Kaye
