2Introduction

What is P.E.T ?

Polyethylene (sometimes written poly ethylterephthalateene terephthalate), commonly abbreviated PET, PETE, or the obsolete PETP or PET-P, is a thermoplastic polymer resin of the polyester family and is used in synthetic fibers; beverage, food and other liquid containers; thermoforming applications; and engineering resins often in combination with glass fiber.

What is P.E.T made of ?

The term polyethylene terephthalate is a source of confusion because this substance, PET, does not contain polyethylene. Thus, the alternate form, poly(ethylene terephthalate), is often used in scholarly journals for the sake of accuracy and clarity

Advantages of P.E.T ? Light in weight. Can be easily molded. Corrosion resistant and chemically

inert. Cheap to produce. Strong and durable. Does not expand on heating. Can be manufactured in any size.

Disadvantages of P.E.T ? Non renewable resource. Environmental pollutant( non-

biodegradable ). Produces toxic fumes if burnt. Recycling is very costly. Gets deformed under load.

5Uses of P.E.T

PET is an excellent barrier material, plastic bottles made from PET are widely used for soft drinks .

PET is also used as substrate in thin film and solar cell.

It is also used for making magnetic tapes, used in audio and video cassette recorders.

P.E.T is also used for making pressure sensitive adhesive tapes.
