PROBLEM #1

Page 3: PETA in MATH

Problem:Ben’s age is four years less than three times that of his sister Amy. Half of Ben’s age increased by Amy’s age is 2 years more than twice Amy’s age.Find their ages.

Page 4: PETA in MATH

more than

+

Solution:Let n = Amy’s age Then 3n – 4 = Ben’s age

Half of Ben’s age

½ (3n-4)

Increased by

+

Amy’s age

n

is

=

two years

2

twice Amy’s age

2n

Equation: ½ (3n-4) + n = 2 + 2n

Page 5: PETA in MATH

½ (3n-4) + n = 2 + 2n

Equation:

3/2n -2 + n = 2 + 2n Multiplication Property3/2n + n - 2n = 2 + 2 Symmetric Property1/2n = 4 Addition & Subtraction

Propertyn = 8 Amy is 8 years old3n - 4 = 3(8) - 4 = 20

Substitution

Ben is 20 years old

Althea has a Higher income than Vaughn and their total income is $82,000.if their salaries differ by $16,900,then what is the income

of each?

Page 9: PETA in MATH

Let x+$16,900=Althea income Let x=Vaughn `s income

Solution:X+16,900+x=82,0002x=$65,100X=$32550$49,450=Althea$32,550=Vaughn

PROBLEM #3

Page 12: PETA in MATH

The age of Aman and Atul are in the ratio 5:7.Four years later, the sum of their ages will be 56years.What are their present age?

Page 13: PETA in MATH

Let x(5x+4)=Aman`s ageLetx(7x+4)=Atul`s age

WE:(5x+4)+(7x+4)=565x+4+7x+4=565x+7x=56-4-412x=48X=4Amans`s age= 24yrs.oldAtuls`s age=32yrs.ols
