Every'rose hasits thorns
He lied. That's all I have tosav.
Sure, he had a gamblingproblem, even bet on some
iraseball games. Here inNevada, it isn't all that uncom-mon.
But Pete Rose lied.He didn't simPlY come clean
with his admission of betting on
baseball, though the mainstreammedia reports it that waY. Infact, Rose just cracked an egg
on his face. For vears. the man known as
"Chariie Hustle" had so cate-
soricallv denied having bet on
6asebali, he wasvilling to stake
his very name, word and char-
acter on that conviction.Rose once said, "SomebodY's
sotta win and somebodY's gotta
iose, but I'll let the other guY
lose."Well, now it's Rose who has
lost one of the greatest wagers a
man can make bY anteing uP his
own personal integntY.Ue'a Ue at the toP of mY list if
I was assembling a baseballdream team, but I wouldn't trustthe zuv with a $5 loan.
Iir not uPset over learningthat he di{ in fact, garnble on
his sport. Rather, I am disheart-
ened to know now that Rose
had been lYing all along whenhe so ferventlY insisted uPon hisinnocence.
I'll freely admit that I was
one of those who, deeP down, reallv wanted to believe thatRose was innocent, and thatMaior League Baseball had
been trying to railroad himbecause current CommissionerBud Selig had a Personal beefwith the suy.
