Make trains the first choice for 21st century travel

• European growth target: Increase rail travel to minimize environmental footprint

• Enhance the perceived value of rail travel and provide more than just ‘transport’

• All travels under 1000 km should in the future be done with Railways

Making passengers passionate about traveling by your train

Challenges

• Aging communications system

• Difficult terrain and tunnels

• Tight time schedule

TodayJBV has implemented GSM-R to ensure to safe and reliable operations

Solution

• Complete turnkey project with proven GSM-R technology

• Fast rollout capabilities

• Strong local presence to enable close cooperation

Benefits

• Reduced OPEX

• Improved safety and security

• Future proof platform for new applications and services

“We were working under hard time pressure because the Norwegian rail approval authority defined for JBV very strong milestones. That was a challenge but we ended up with something that is working perfectly and we are very satisfied with the systems and solutions from Nokia Siemens Networks,”

“The strong local presence of Nokia Siemens Networks was key for the success of that project.”

Harald Nicolaysen,GSM-R Project Director, JBV

TodayExperiences and lessons learned

• Site aquisition

– Start on time, can delay a project

• Organisation

– Demand a proper project organisation from Vendor

– Ensure a proper mirror organisation in BaneDanmark

• Involve the End-Users from the beginning

– Users workshops/conferences

• Define a clear migration strategy

• Rolling stock migration (Cab radios)

– Legislation needed?

• Ensure purchase of a well proven and standardized solution

FutureWhere are we heading

• GSM-R is spread globally

– North and South America

– Japan

– First Russian commercial project

• ETCS over GPRS?

• Applications using GSM-R (GPRS) widely spread among...

– ...Infrastructure owner

– ...Rolling stock operators

• Next Eirene version 8/16 (FRS/SRS)

• Denmark finishes its GSM-R project on time and on budget...

• Version Management/European TestLab

– To ensure certified networks through Europe

– To minimize project/country specific testing

• Capacity for Voice and ETCS (In main junctions and stations)

– Additional frequencies

– ETCS over GPRS

– Other solutions (HR for ASCI and PtP...)

• Operational procedures

– REC (Railway emergency call)

Railway operators do benefit from the evolution in public networks. Fulfilling railway requirements, GSM-R is based on proven and mature GSM products and technology. This success can be repeated with LTE/LTE-R. The adaption of 3G for railways is not mandatory because of longer investment cycles and operational needs and the advent of LTE.

Reasons for a GSM-R evolution

• Based on the introduction of the first LTE networks for public operators, the accelerated necessity to adapt this standard for railway specific requirements is obvious.

• The benefits of this new technology and the support of a long, smooth upgrade period, which gives every flexibility and saves taken investments, are a real opportunity.

• Early adaption of new technologies supports the railway operations in unknown flexibility for internal and external purposes.

• Railway operators have fixed their future, operational needs.

• Pre-condition of this approach is the preparation of the necessary standardization work for railway requirements today.

2/3G to LTE transition

Fundamentals for a smooth transition of subscribers to LTE

• Protection of investments from current GSM-R to “LTE-R” (infrastructure and terminals)

• Transparent mobility and roaming across domains

• Consistency of 2/3G/LTE services

• Equivalent or improved Quality of Service, e.g. voice quality and call set-up times

• No disruption of essential regulatory services
