A Spotlight on the Peters Township Library Board

The Peters Township Library Board is responsible for recommending library policies and procedures, financial requirements and promoting the library’s programs and resources to the community. Board members are appointed by the Peters Township Council. The Peters Township Public Library was founded by the Women’s Club of Peters Township in 1957 and was first housed in a section of the Peters Township High School’s

Library. The first PT Library Board of Directors was later appointed by the Women’s Club of Peters Township in 1964 and consisted of seven members. In July of this year, the Peters Township Public Library became an official Department of the Township, and has continued to provide oversight of the operation of the library with an administrative board. To become a part of the PT Library Board, a candidate must submit a letter of interest to Township Project Coordinator, Tom Gromek, and the Peters Township Council stating one’s desires and qualifications. If chosen, the candidate is then asked to attend a Council meeting to be interviewed. “The PT Library Board has been the best board I have ever served on,” says current Vice Chair Carol Adler. Serving as advocates, PT Library Board members reach out to the community, staff and patrons to share and listen to new ideas. The Board reviews the library’s statistics at every meeting and are then better prepared to promote the library as a significant asset to the Township. Board members lend their expertise and leadership for the good of the library and the people served by the library. “I sought to join the Board because I believe in and support the Library’s stated mission or providing resources to life-long learners,” says Frank Danyo, who has been a member of the PT Library Board for two and a half years. “The library is more than deserving of its national recognition, including its 2010 ranking in the top ten Public Libraries in the country based on population by the Hennen's American Public Library Ratings. Clearly, PT Library has more than met the challenge of providing ample resources and first-class programs for all ages.” Although the PT Library Board does not sponsor any annual events, they are visible in the community and serve as ambassadors of the library at Community Day, special library events and fundraisers throughout the year. They have served

as chairpersons for the Taste of the Township, published the library R.E.A.D cookbook entitled, “Recipes: Enticing and Delicious,” assist with collection development, help weekly as library volunteers, PTPL Friends, library tour guides and often assist in researching guest speakers for future library programs. PT Library Director, Myra Oleynik, finds it truly rewarding to share the library’s monthly statistics, new ideas and programs with the Library Board. “These passionate promoters are problem solvers, thinkers, dreamers and lovers of the library,” she says. “Their support for our library is invaluable. Through their coordination, hard work and determination over the years, new libraries have been built and renovated, budgets have been restored and increased, new staff hired and respect has been generated for the powerful role the Peters Township Public Library plays in our community.” For more information, contact Myra Oleynik at [email protected].

This summer, Peters Township appointed Sue Miller to the position of Assistant Director for the Peters Township Public Library. Miller, a graduate of Bethel Park High School, is married to her husband Tim and has four children: Emily, Audrey, Bonny and Will. She grew up in Bethel Park, moved away for a time and then moved back to the area 20 years ago. Following high school, Miller attended Grove City College and earned a Bachelor of Science in Management Engineering. She worked for eight years as an engineer at both J.C. Penny in the state of California and Black & Decker in Maryland. When her oldest child was born, she quit working as an engineer and became a stay at home mom. During this time, Miller volunteered at her children’s elementary school’s library, and it was there that she developed her love of the library. She returned to school in her early 40’s to earn her Master of Science in Library Science from Clarion University. Miller has worked part time for the Peters Township Public Library for nine years as the Administrative Assistant. As Assistant Director, she will oversee the day to day operations of the library, as well as work closely with the Library Director on developing and administering the library budget, planning and implementing library programming and long-range planning.

“My hope is to continue to work with the library staff to provide an unbiased wealth of information, programming and resources, while spreading the word to the community about all of the wonderful things we have to offer!” says Miller. Miller’s future plans include organizing and hosting the “Thinking Money” Exhibition developed by the American Library Association Public Programs Office in collaboration with the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. “The purpose of this exhibition is to bring financial literacy information to tweens, teens and their families through an adventure-themed storyline, interactive iPad content and other fun activities,” says Miller. This exhibition was granted to only 50 libraries across the country, and Peters Township Public Library was the only library in Pennsylvania awarded this opportunity. The exhibition will be at the library from Mar. 28 through May 4, 2017.

Miller’s favorite thing about Peters Township is, of course, the library! “We have a phenomenal staff that strives to provide a variety of resources, a welcoming space and informative programs for the community,” she says. “I am so grateful for the overwhelming support I have had from my co-workers at the library, township staff, family and friends during my transition into this new position.” Miller also notes special thanks to Pier M. Lee, who would not accept “no” for an answer as she tried to bring Miller onto the library staff on several occasions. To contact Sue Miller, email [email protected].

Peters Township Parks and Recreation Naming Rights On Aug. 8 Peters Township Council approved a Naming Rights Policy presented to them by the Parks and Recreation Board. This new policy allows the naming or renaming of parks and recreational facilities. This is a complex process, as a name is a powerful and permanent identity for a public place. The policy provides guidance to those that have an interest in the naming and/or renaming of a park or recreational facility. The naming or renaming will be reserved for circumstances that will best serve the interests of the Township, and ensure a worthy enduring legacy for the Township’s Parks and Recreation system. To this end, Peters Township Parks and Recreation supports consideration of naming requests within the following broad categories: Historic events, people and places, outstanding individuals and major gifts. All requests should be submitted in writing to the Parks and Recreation Director to be considered by the Parks and Recreation Board, who will make a recommendation to Council regarding a final decision. Details about naming, renaming and the process to submit a proposal are included in the Peters Township Parks and Recreation Naming Rights Policy which can be found on our website at peterstownship.com.

Snow RemovalSNOW REMOVAL POLICY

Peters Township now performs snow removal on 131 miles of roads, 21 of those by contract with PennDOT. The Township has a council-endorsed policy that basically states that from the time the Public Works Department is first notified of hazardous road conditions, all roads within its jurisdiction will be treated with salt within 3.5 hours. If snow plowing is required, the policy states that all roads will have been plowed at least once within 5 to 6 hours. The Public Works Department’s vehicle inventory has 11 fully equipped trucks plus three additional vehicles equipped only with snowplows.

SNOW REMOVAL FACTS The 2017 estimated expenditures for snow removal are $567,975, which is a 6.5% increase over 2016 budgeted expenditures. Just like last winter season, the Township has two separate contracts for salt from two separate suppliers. We anticipate purchasing over 4,000 tons of salt at a cost of $69.29 per ton, which is the same as last year. As the cost of salt increases, every effort is made to maximize salt usage. This is done by pretreating the salt with a brine solution in addition to not treating roads in the late overnight hours unless conditions are severe. Our goal is to be out early enough to treat the roads for school bus service without a delay. The Public Works Department works closely with the School District to keep them up to date on the status of snow removal operations so the district can make an informed decision on whether or not to delay school. The use of two salt providers ensured that we had a steady source of salt throughout the winter. Historically, Peters Township has never been without salt, and we will be continuing this practice.

OUR CONTRACT WITH PENNDOT

Under a contractual agreement with PennDOT, the Public Works Department provides snow removal service to the following state highways within Peters Township:

• East McMurray Road • Valley Brook Road east of Route 19 • Thomas Road • Sugar Camp Road • Church Hill Road • Bebout Road • Justabout Road

The Peters Township Public Works Department does not service:

• Waterdam Road • Route 19 (Washington Road) • West McMurray Road • Valley Brook-West of Route 19 • Venetia Road

If you have any questions or comments the streets maintained by PennDOT call 724.223.4480.

SNOW EMERGENCIESWhen a significant snowfall

occurs, it is sometimes necessary for the township to declare a snow emergency. During a snow emergency, on-street parking is prohibited and the police department can issue tickets or even have vehicles towed away.

Citations can be issued to operators of vehicles not equipped with snow tires or chains.

When a snow emergency is declared, it is broadcast on Peters Township Comcast Cable Channels 7 and 17 and Verizon Channels 38 and 40. This information is also distributed to a number of local radio, television stations and Peters Patch.

Thank you to all who donated to the library during the WCCF One Day of Giving

on Sept. 13

Through your generous donations, the library received $6,135 in donations, and with funds from the WCCF bonus pool, realized a total of $7,688. We would like to thank the following donors, as well as those who made anonymous donations: Thinking Money is an exhibition

you won’t want to miss! Look for it Mar. 28 through May 4, 2017.

In April 2016, the library was selected as one of only fifty libraries nationwide to participate in the Thinking Money 1000-square-foot traveling exhibition. In fact, the Peters Township Public Library is the only library in the state of Pennsylvania to be selected! In addition to hosting the exhibition, the library also received a $1,000 programming allowance, an expenses-paid training session at the 2016 ALA Annual Conference in June 2016, and promotional and support materials. Library staff members are encouraged to participate in online training modules, and a committee has been formed within the library to create and schedule programs related to the exhibition.

With the exhibition traveling the country for two years, the library had to list their preference of hosting dates. Since Governor Tom Wolfe declared April as Financial Education Month in Pennsylvania, and national Money Smart Week is the fourth week in April, the library was thrilled to receive their first choice to host Thinking Money in April of 2017. The exhibition dates are Mar. 28 through May 4, 2017, but due to travel time, set up and tear down of the exhibit, the library is scheduling all related programs in April.

Thinking Money is designed to teach tweens, teens and the adults in their lives about money. The library is in the process of planning hands-on programs for both kids and adults on financial topics like saving, spending, and avoiding fraud. “Money affects all of us, but many of us lack the information we need to make smart decisions about our financial futures,” says Sue Miller, Thinking Money project director. “Thinking Money is designed to teach us about financial literacy in a way that is not only understandable, but fun, and we’re proud to bring it to our library.”

Through an adventure-themed storyline, interactive iPad content and other fun activities, Thinking Money explores themes like wants vs. needs, preparing for a rainy/sunny day, imagining your future self and avoiding financial fraud. Admission to the exhibition, which will be located in the library lobby, and all programs are free of charge.

Thinking Money was created by the American Library Association (ALA) in partnership with the FINRA Investor Education Foundation.
