Since the time of our inception as a colony in September of 2013, we have hoped to reach

the status of a permanent chapter. We have strived to uphold the three objects of Alpha Chi

Sigma and to fulfill the five obligations. By forging strong relationships with the faculty and

administration, we have worked towards advancing the name of Alpha Chi Sigma on the

Philadelphia University campus, as well as surrounding areas. We hope you recognize our

commitment to the fraternity and support our future endeavors by granting us this request.

Thank you for your time and consideration. We eagerly await your response.

Yours in the Double Bond,

History of the Colony

In the fall semester of 2013, a select group of individuals decided they wanted to share

their admiration for the chemical sciences at Philadelphia University (PhilaU). Dr. Niny Rao, a

brother of Alpha Chi Sigma, inspired this group of upper level chemistry students to bring Alpha

Chi Sigma to Philadelphia University during a social event at Eastern State Penitentiary in

Philadelphia. They began the planning process with Dr. Rao and brothers from the Gamma

Omega chapter at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania. Informational meetings were

held during that fall semester to determine if Alpha Chi Sigma was of interest to students at

Philadelphia University. Fortunately, Philadelphia University students were interested and the

Alpha class was inducted in November 2013 at Widener University. Members of the Alpha class

helped host the first annual Thanksgiving potluck for the science department, inviting both

professors and students excited about the prospect of Alpha Chi Sigma at Philadelphia

University. This event was pivotal for the formation and future success of the AXS colony at

PhilaU.

A majority of the Alpha class was initiated by our parent chapter, Gamma Omega, at

Widener University in January of 2014. The Alpha Class consisted of the nine brothers listed

below. The board positions they held for the 2013-2014 academic year are also listed:

Master Alchemist: Tara Coia

Vice-Master Alchemist: Lauren Pantalone

Master of Ceremonies: Rachel Heister

In the spring of 2014, our pre-colony began its annual tradition of volunteering at the

Franklin Institute’s Annual Plastics Fair, planned in full by Alpha Chi Sigma’s own Dr.

Twardowski. This is a popular event for children and families. At this event, brothers

participated in various scientific and kid-friendly hands-on activities that promoted a love for the

sciences. Contributing to this event allowed the brothers to express their enthusiasm for

community service, teaching, and learning.

Recruited pledges for the Beta class were inducted by Widener University’s Gamma

Omega Class at Philadelphia University in February 2014. After attending six weeks of

informative lessons on the history of AXS, nine new pledges were initiated by Alpha Rho at the

University of Maryland in April 2014. These brothers are listed below.

• Nishat Anjum

• Rachel Beningo

• Renneeylnn Craft

• Khiree Moore

• Nina Morvin

• Robin Relosa

• Alexandra Sarno

• Gina Sebastiano

• Eric Tompkins

With the pre-colony growing, our organization began to recognize and unite a diverse set

of science majors revolving around the history of chemistry. In addition to Master Alchemist,

Vice Master Alchemist, Master of Ceremonies, Treasurer and Reporter Recorder, four new board

positions were created to meet the needs of the growing pre-colony: Pledge Master, Social Chair,

Professional Chair and Webmaster/Historian. The 2014-2015 Academic year board members are

Recruiting for the Fall of 2014 provided the Alpha and Beta classes an opportunity to

share their knowledge of AXS and love for the sciences. They were able to do this by hosting a

trip to a local historical site, Eastern State Penitentiary. In addition to this trip, the brothers and

pledges attended several social events on campus, including a Quizzo game and Philadelphia

University’s Homecoming and Family Day, in which members hosted a table of games and

activities for fundraising purposes. Brothers also planned and hosted the second annual

Thanksgiving potluck event as a “thank you” to the Philadelphia University science faculty

members. This annual event is a way to bring the students of Alpha Chi Sigma together with

faculty members to encourage of the formation of long lasting relationships.

In November, nine new pledges were initiated by Gamma Omega at Widener University.

These new brothers of the Gamma class are listed below.

The Philadelphia University Colony kicked off their Spring 2015 Semester by

volunteering at the Plastics Fair at the Franklin Institute in Center City Philadelphia.

Volunteering at the Plastics Fair has become an annual philanthropic event for brothers at

Philadelphia University. The positive experiences the brothers had at the Plastic’s Fair trickled

into the beginning of the colony’s recruitment week in February 2015. Recruitment activities

were structured and planned to allow for previously initiated Brothers to get to know potential

new members and showcase what Alpha Chi Sigma has to offer chemistry lovers at the

university. Events during recruitment included a “Meet the Brothers” get-together where

Brothers and potential new members spent some time bonding and chatting about the Fraternity.

In addition to “Meet the Brothers,” recruitment events included a competitive game of Quizzo, a

Page 7: Petition for Chapter - Alpha Chi Sigma · • Yulissa Gomez • Emilie Nazario • ... campus, for a night of pizza and board games. The third annual Thanksgiving potluck for faculty

game night, and ice-skating at Penn’s Landing. Induction was held on February 17th, in

Hayward Hall, a second home for the science majors at PhilaU.

Big-Little Reveal was held on April 2nd, where Inducted Pledges were united with

members of their respective Families within the Colony. Throughout the rest of the semester, the

Colony’s social and professional events included a movie night, participating in the Relay for

Life, and a career fair.

Initiation was held at Philadelphia University for the first time on April 12th, 2015. Since

the Spring of 2015, PhilaU has hosted their own Initiations on campus. These events have been

well planned and successful. The first class to be initiated at Philadelphia University is listed

below:

• Eleni Farrell

• Dr. Megan Fuller

• Yulissa Gomez

• Emilie Nazario

The Fall 2015 semester began by recruiting students to join Alpha Chi Sigma at the

University's Student Involvement Fair. Recruiting at this event was followed up with an interest

meeting for potential new members. Shortly after these events, Recruitment week followed and

included events such as speed dating, a s’mores night, tie-dying, a movie night, a picnic, and

finished off with a university hosted hypnotist performance. Seven new pledges were inducted

on September 16, 2015. These pledges then began their six weeks of pledge classes to learn more

about the fraternity and its history. A meeting time was set for the semester and brother meetings

were held monthly. Two brothers entered a campus competition representing Alpha Chi Sigma to

show their pride in PhilaU and the brotherhood. Eric Tompkins was successful as he was named

“Ram Royalty” on October 2, 2015, winning $250 for the fraternity. Brothers volunteered at

Philadelphia University's Family Day on October 3rd. At this event, brothers interacted with

PhilaU students and their families by facilitating a game of molecule pong. On October 23rd,

Alpha Chi Sigma at PhilaU partnered up with Phi Psi, the professional textile fraternity on

campus, for a night of pizza and board games. The third annual Thanksgiving potluck for faculty

was held on November 19th. This event helped raise money for AXS through donations made by

faculty members in attendance. In November 2015, seven new pledges were initiated. They are

as listed below.

The Spring of 2016 was a successful semester for the colony. The semester began, again,

with volunteering at the Franklin Institute’s Plastic Fair. We then finished our Fall fundraising

efforts in March having a Pie a Professor Fundraiser. We brought in new pledges with events of

speed dating, movie night, and a karaoke night. We were very proud to recruit fourteen new

members. This marked the largest class that we have brought in to date. On April 10th, these

fourteen new pledges were initiated:

• Rajan Bhatt

• Emily Choi

• Dennis Dinah

• Victoria Frisbie

• Zakkiyya Griffin

• Omar Homary

• Dr. Jeffrey Klemens

• Lucas Marshall

• Lauren Mellott

• Sara Nele

• Reema Patel

• Molly Rapine

• Samantha Rotay

• Shevani Shah

With the initiation of these brothers, the colony of Alpha Chi Sigma at Philadelphia University

had initiated 56 brothers within three academic years.

Towards the end of the semester, a new board was elected for the 2016-2017 year:

Master Alchemist – Arielle Schock

Vice Master Alchemist – Eleni Farrell

Page 10: Petition for Chapter - Alpha Chi Sigma · • Yulissa Gomez • Emilie Nazario • ... campus, for a night of pizza and board games. The third annual Thanksgiving potluck for faculty

Master of Ceremonies – Alyssa Severino

Treasurer – Alana Waters

Social Chair – Shane McFoy

Webmaster/Historian/Alumni – Emily Lindenmuth

It is to be noted that the Pledge Master position from previous years was added to the duties of

Vice Master Alchemist and the responsibilities of an Alumni Chair were given to the

Webmaster/Historian.

The fall semester of 2016 began with participating in the University’s Student

Involvement Fair. Being that it was a new semester with a new board of brothers, we were eager

to start our recruitment process. The Student Involvement Fair was followed up the next week

with recruitment events. It has become a tradition of the colony to start out Recruitment Week

with an event similar to speed dating. Other recruitment events included a movie night, an ice

cream social, s’mores, and Quizzo. Because of an overwhelming amount of interest, we held two

inductions. The first induction was held on September 12 and seven new recruits were inducted

at this event. The second ceremony, where 6 new recruits were inducted, took place on

September 15. The following Friday, brothers and pledges took the annual trip to Eastern State

Penitentiary. Twelve new members were initiated on November 3rd and the thirteenth pledge

History of Philadelphia University

The following information was retrieved from the Philadelphia University Website:

“Philadelphia University was founded in 1884 as the Philadelphia Textile School in the

wake of the 1876 Centennial Exposition. A group of textile manufacturers, led by Theodore

Search, noticed a sizeable gap between the quality and variety of American textile products and

those displayed by European mills. To address this, the group established the school to educate

America’s textile workers and managers.

Several years later, the school affiliated with the Pennsylvania Museum (now the

Philadelphia Museum of Art) and School of Industrial Art. By the mid-1890s, the school had

settled at Broad and Pine Street in downtown Philadelphia. It survived the Depression and

entered a new period of growth at the outset of World War II. In 1941, the school was granted

the right to award baccalaureate degrees and changed its name to the Philadelphia Textile

Institute (PTI).

By 1949, PTI, no longer affiliated with the museum, began conducting classes at its

present site in the East Falls section of Philadelphia. Throughout the 1950s, it continued to grow,

and, in 1961, changed its name to Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science.

The student population doubled from 1954 to 1964, and again by 1978. Programs in the

arts, sciences, and business administration were added. The College purchased an adjoining

property in 1972, doubling the size of its campus.

Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science the institution offered its first graduate

degree, the Master of Business Administration, in 1976. With the purchase of properties in 1980

and 1988, the size of the campus nearly doubled again and grew to include additional

classrooms, research laboratories, student residences, and athletic facilities. In 1992, the 54,000-

square-foot Paul J. Gutman Library was built.

The college continued through the ’90s in providing its students with the highest-quality

education and real-world experience demanded by their chosen professions, adding majors in a

wide range of fields. To better reflect the institution’s breadth and depth, the College applied for

and was granted university status by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1999. And, in a

historic move, the Board of Trustees voted to change the School’s name to Philadelphia

University on July 13, 1999.

Known also by its nickname of PhilaU, Philadelphia University now has three colleges,

including the College of Architecture and the Built Environment; the College of Design,

Engineering and Commerce; and the College of Science, Health and the Liberal Arts” (A Brief

History).

History of Philadelphia University Chemistry

Although Philadelphia University was initially founded as a textiles college, chemistry

has always been an integral part of this institution. Founded in 1884 as the Philadelphia Textile

School, the institution established The School of Chemistry & Dyeing shortly after in 1887.

Since then, the chemistry department has experienced tremendous growth, preparing students for

careers in the field of science and research, and making them competitive candidates for graduate

and medical schools.

The curriculum involves upper level chemistry courses including physical chemistry,

biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, advanced organic chemistry, instrumental methods of

analysis, environmental chemistry, and polymer chemistry. The integration of faculty-student

research projects into the curriculum has resulted in great success, earning participants

invitations to present at national conferences in Atlanta, Toronto, Denver, San Diego, and New

Orleans. Additionally, Philadelphia University now offers the option to earn a degree in

chemistry, with a concentration in environmental science.
