J’ai vu Petr Lovigin pour la première fois en 2009. C’était à l’aéroport de Munich. Derrière la vitre qui sépare les voyageurs de ceux qui les attendent, se tenait un jeune homme en sarouel noir et T-shirt blanc. Il tenait à la main un parapluie ouvert qui avait la forme d’une tête de Mickey Mouse. Je ne pouvais pas voir ses deux mains gantées d’une vingtaine de bagues argentées. Le préposé aux passeports, lui, regardait Lovigin et ses bagues, fasciné, interloqué. Un alien venu d’une autre planète! Sur le visage de Petr flottait un léger sourire, et du bout de son ombrelle-jouet il me salua de loin comme pour m’assurer que oui, c’était bien lui. Il venait pour la première fois en Allemagne pour le vernissage de son exposition personnelle dans notre galerie. Notre relation de travail avait d’abord commencé selon les modes et les manières d’un monde asservi aux communications tous azimuts: Échange de mails intempestifs, un peu de parlote par Skype, quelques coups de téléphone pour assurer la logistique. Pas vraiment une rencontre, plutôt des interactions pratiques. Il fallait bien se débrouiller des incertitudes dues au langage: Je ne parle pas le russe, et même si Petr cite Le Bateau Ivre de Rimbaud en français, nous peinions parfois à nous comprendre. Mais cette communication virtuelle qui est une partie intégrale de la vie de Petr – bloggeur acharné pour la plus grande joie de milliers de jeunes russes – s’est lentement transformée en passerelle pour son monde, en billet d’entrée pour cette Planet Lovigin. Voici des bribes d’échanges avec Petr que je remercie ici de sa confiance et de son amitié.
I saw Petr Lovigin for the f irst time in 2009. It was at Munich airport. Behind the glass
panel that separates the travellers from the people who are waiting for them, there was a
young man in a black sirwal and a white T-shir t. In his hand, he had an open umbrella that
had the shape of a Mickey Mouse head. I couldn’t see his two hands, gloved with around
twenty si lver r ings. But the passport control of f icer could, and he was looking at Lovigin and
his r ings, fascinated, taken aback. An alien come from another planet! There was a sl ight
smile on Petr’s face, and with the tip of his play umbrella, he waved from afar as if to conf irm
that, yes, it was him. He had travelled to Germany for the f irst time for the vernissage of his
personal exhibition at our gallery. Our work relationship had f irst star ted according to the
rules and the ways of a world enslaved to communication in every direction: untimely email
exchanges, a l ittle chit-chat on Skype, a few phone calls to ascer tain the logistics. Not really
an encounter, more l ike useful interactions. We did have to get through the language uncer-
tainties: I don’t speak Russian, and even if Petr quotes Rimbaud’s Le Bateau Ivre in French,
we sometimes had dif f iculties understanding each other.
But this vir tual communication, which is an inherent par t of Petr’s l i fe – relentless blogger to
the delight of thousands of young Russians – slowly changed into the footbridge to his world,
the entrance ticket to this Planet Lovigin . Here are snatches of conversations with Petr whom
I want to thank at this point for his trust and his fr iendship.

Anna : Petr, where are you? I have some questions. Petr : Lima, Pérou. Je suis prêt pour tes questions!
Petr : Lima, Peru. I ’m l istening to your questions!
Anna : Petr, où es tu? J’ai des questions.
Anna : Ça veut dire que tes autres séries font partie d’une époque révolue de ta vie?
Petr : Bolivie!! Bolivia!!
Anna : Petr, où es tu? Petr, where are you?
Anna : Tu donnes dans le cliché de l’auteur voyageur? Are you turning into the cl iché of the travell ing author?
Petr : Pourquoi cliché? Pour nous, les russes, les frontières se sont ouvertes il y a vingt ans seulement. Les voyages que je fais ne sont pas des destinations qui font rêver ceux de ma génération. Mais je crois que l’on rencontre le conte, la féerie quand on regarde différemment. C’est tout.
Anna : Ta série sur la Grande Russie et le Caucase est entièrement en couleur – c’est fini le noir et blanc?
Petr : Si le bon Dieu nous donne la couleur, pourquoi utiliser le noir et blanc? Je ne vais pas décolorer le monde.
Petr : Peut-être ou pas. La matière noire et blanche m’aide à donner une forme homogène à mes projets.
Anna : Petr? Où es tu? Petr? Where are you?
Your ser ies on Great Russia and the Caucasus is al l in colour – are you over with black and white?
Does this mean that your other ser ies are par t
of bygone days of your l i fe?
If God Almighty gives us colour, then why use black and white?
I ’m not going to take away the colours of the world.
Maybe, or maybe not. Black and white matter helps me give a
homogeneous form to my projects.
Why a cl iché? For us Russians, the borders have only been open
for twenty years. The journeys I do aren’t to destinations that the
people of my generation dream of. But I believe we get in touch
with the fairy tale, the enchantment, when we look at the world
dif ferently. That’s al l .
Petr me semblait si loin du quotidien que j’ai tenté de le repousser dans ses retranchements pour comprendre si son monde, sa planète, était une façon de se mettre à l’abri de la réalité, du « vrai » monde. Je lui ai demandé s’il ne regrettait pas le fait de ne pas avoir été présent en Russie, alors que la rue à Moscou s’enflammait. Petr m’a alors écrit un mail, presqu’une lettre: « Anna, je connais le cours du dollar et de l’euro. Je suis au courant de toutes les catastrophes universelles et des résultats de foot. Simplement dans mon monde la réalité devient le conte, et le conte se mélange à la réalité. Dans cet univers les personnages du monde réel comme Sathya Sai Baba, Takeshi Kitano et Leo Tolstoï ou bien le jeune Louis Armstrong cohabitent avec nous. Il y a beaucoup de place dans ce monde-là, et de la place pour les regards. Il y a certainement plus que deux façons d’être dans le monde, comme il y a peut-être deux Lovigin, l’un assez romantique et ironique, comme tu dis, dans son monde virtuel et photo-graphique, et l’autre plus cynique avec ses doutes, ses défauts. Et je ne sais pas lequel est le plus vraiment moi. » La rencontre avec Petr Lovigin, ce rêveur du réel, s’est faite pas à pas, se construit image après image. On en sort revigoré et sûr à nouveau que le songe est garant de liberté.

Petr seemed so far away from everyday l i fe that I tr ied to dr ive him into a corner to under-
stand if his world, his planet, was a way of protecting himself from reality, from the ‘true’
world. I asked him if he regretted the fact that he wasn’t in Russia while the streets of
Moscow were going up in f lames with protest.
Petr then sent me an email, nearly a letter: ‘Anna, I ’m aware of the dollar and euro exchange
rate. I know about al l the universal catastrophes and the football results. It’s just that in
my world the reality becomes the tale, and the tale mixes with reality. In this universe
f igures from the real world l ike Sathya Sai Baba, Takeshi Kitano and Leo Tolstoy or the young
Louis Armstrong all l ive with us. There is a lot of space in this world, and space for looking
at things.
There are cer tainly more than two ways of being in the world, l ike there are maybe two
Lovigins: one quite romantic and ironic, as you say, in his vir tual and photographic world,
and the other one more cynical, with his doubts and his f laws. And I don’t know which
one is the closest to who I am.’
Getting to know Petr Lovigin, he who dreams what's real, happened step by step and goes
on picture by picture. You come out invigorated and sure once again that dreaming ensures
freedom.

Anna : Lénine, ça veut dire quoi pour toi? Le passé? Une figure culte pour tes ancêtres? Une erreur de casting pour la Russie, ou l’histoire tout simplement?
Petr : Il y a un monument à la gloire de Lénine sur chaque grande place de presque toutes les petites villes de la Russie (et même celles qui ne sont pas si petites). Lénine, c’est une période de l’histoire russe assez bête, assez sanglante. Aujourd’hui c’est vraiment mieux qu’avant.
What does Lenin mean to you? The past?
A cult f igure for your ancestors? A casting
mistake for Russia, or simply history?
There’s a memorial to the glory of Lenin on every big square of nearly all
the small towns of Russia (and even in the ones that are not so small).
Lenin is a par t of Russian history that is quite stupid, quite bloody. Now
it’s much better than before.
