PETROCIDE® REGISTERED BIOCIDES: PROTECT & PRESERVEStepan Oilfield Solutions understands the detrimental effects that microbial growth may cause on your upstream oil and gas recovery systems.

Our new PETROCIDE Registered Biocides line are U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered blends of glutaraldehyde and quaternary amines. These formulated end-use products (EUPs) are designed to specifically reduce and eliminate heterotrophic bacteria, acid-producing bacteria (APB) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) that are known to instigate issues such as well souring and microbial-induced corrosion on oilfield equipment, storage tanks and transmission pipelines.

Stepan Oilfield Solutions offers a solid portfolio of the most commercially used biocidal active EUPs to meet your microbial control needs.

Stepan Oilfield Solutions conducted a series of laboratory tests to measure the biocidal performance of the PETROCIDE Registered Biocides portfolio against various bacteria types that yielded dramatic results as seen in the following figures.

Figure 1 demonstrates the fast-acting characteristic of PETROCIDE Q-D10, PETROCIDE QG-105 and PETROCIDE GQ-1425, showing a greater than four-log reduction of SRB at 150 ppm at a 1-minute contact time.

This graph shows the log reduction of a single dilution series data against planktonic bacteria at a 1-minute treatment time. A larger log reduction means greater elimination of bacteria.

The test shows PETROCIDE Q-D10, PETROCIDE QG-105 and PETROCIDE GQ-1425 reducing at least 1 log or greater against SRB at 15 ppm and 150 ppm (total actives).

*Testing data was derived using a proprietary Stepan Company testing method.

Figure 2 shows how PETROCIDE GQ-2713 , in particular, was more effective at reducing microbial populations than glutaraldehyde alone, especially in the case of SRB.

Both PETROCIDE GQ-2713 and PETROCIDE GQ-1203 demonstrated quick and effective elimination of SRB that are known to cause corrosion. PETROCIDE GQ-1203 showed a 99.9% diminished SRB population at 2 hours, and PETROCIDE GQ-2713 performed equally well at 4 hours (see Figure 3). After a 24-hour period, both products showed a 10 million-fold reduction of SRB populations.

PETROCIDE GQ-1203 was tested at a 1:3333 dilution (83.85 ppm) from its starting active concentration. Testing data for Figures 2 and 3 were derived using NACE Standard TM0194 for microbial growth tests. NACE is the National Association of Corrosion Engineers.
