Introducing: The New Peugeot 308 Touring

The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

Arriving for an August 2008 launch is the 308 Touring, which will replace the highly successful

Peugeot 307 Touring.

The 308 Touring was first unveiled in the form of the 308 SW Prologue concept car at the

2007 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Like the 308 hatchback, the Touring builds on the strengths of its predecessor but develops

them even further. A panoramic glass roof is standard on the 308 Touring, with a fully lined

and electrically operated sun-blind. The 308 Touring now comes with the option of seven-seats

– making the vehicle one of the most versatile options within its class and offering customers

people-carrying ability in a compact and luxuriously equipped car.

Exterior Styling

The exterior design of the 308 Touring succeeds in combining a particularly expressive and

dynamic design at the front – which it shares with the 308 hatchback – with an original and

curvaceous design at the rear.

Page 7: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

Interior

The interior and the design of the facia panel, identical to that of the hatchback, creates a sense

of well-being entirely in keeping with the overall design of the passenger compartment. Its

sloping design, flowing lines and its elegant and impressive styling, reinforce the impression of

space and on board comfort.

The front seats, which share the same design as the 308 hatchback, are installed slightly lower

than in the 307 Touring (-15 mm), however, occupants can still adjust the seat to their preferred

height (-37 mm to +13 mm) thanks to the active seat height adjustment mechanism. With a

fore and aft movement of 230 mm it also ensures that there is adequate leg room available

for all occupants. On some versions, the front seats can also be equipped with lumbar

adjustment.

Page 8: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

The rear seats in the second row are all individual, easy to remove, identical in size and,

therefore, offer a multitude of combinations in the passenger compartment.

To enable the 308 Touring to accommodate if required, seven occupants, two occasional

seats can be fitted in the third row. These seats, however, can be folded flat and with the

second row seats folded as well, create a flat floor which makes loading of bulky items much

easier.

A Practical Load SpaceAccess to the rear load area is via an easy to open and close rear tailgate. The particularly

low load sill also makes it easy to load the vehicle which can accommodate up to 674 litres

under the rear load cover, with the second row seats in place. With the seats removed it

provides a total volume of 2149 litres up to the level of the roof.

All the Driving Enjoyment of a Hatchback

The 308 Touring is based on platform 2 of the PSA Peugeot Citroën group, which has

exceptional rigidity and, therefore, provides the best possible location for the mechanical

assemblies and the suspension, but also provides excellent noise and vibration surpression.

Compared to the hatchback, the wheelbase of the 308 Touring has been increased by 100 mm

and the rear overhang by 124 mm.

Page 12: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KIT | 11

SafetyWith its excellent body rigidity, the 308 Touring provides the best possible combination of

road holding and comfort and, therefore, is as much fun to drive as any hatchback.

In addition to the primary safety guaranteed by its exemplary road holding, the 308 Touring is

also available with a range of safety equipment such as six airbags as standard, automatic

illumination of the hazard warning lights in an emergency braking situation, ABS with EBFD,

as well as ESP and traction control (option on the XS 1.6 litre models).

With regard to secondary safety, the structure (thanks in particular to the presence of three

impact absorption structures) has been designed to provide optimal protection, combined with

the ability to absorb the maximum amount of impact energy in a controlled manner.

A major safety innovation is the use of a “Wi-Fi” seatbelt sensor system that assures the fasten

seat belt warning function is even available on the removable second row seats, without any

compromise on their modularity.

Suspension and Steering

With regards to road holding, the suspension set-up and wheel size options have been

borrowed from the 308 hatchback, but revised to meet the special requirements of the

Touring version. The use of electro-hydraulic power steering ensures the driver has good

steering precision and feel.

BrakingAt the front, braking is assured by large ventilated brake discs with a diameter of 283 mm and a

thickness of 26 mm. On the 308 1.6 litre petrol-turbo and 2.0 litre HDi FAP models the brake

discs are 302 x 26 mm. The front brake calipers have a piston diameter of 57 mm ensuring a

good level of “feel”, performance and durability. The rear brakes are either 268 x 12 mm or

249 x 9 mm solid brake discs.

The 308 Touring is equipped as standard with ABS including, electronic brake force distribution

(EBFD), emergency brake assist (EBA) and automatic activation of the hazard warning lights

during emergency braking.

ESP, as standard or optional according to the model, adds the following functions: traction

control (ASR) and stability control (CDS). This can be disconnected to improve traction on poor

surfaces but reconnects automatically above a speed of 50 km/h.

Peugeot 307 Touring -The Start of a New Motoring Concept

When it was launched in Australia in September 2003, the Peugeot 307 Touring was a unique

concept. It offered a very stylish and innovative alternative for customers who, for practical

reasons, found that a hatchback vehicle lacked the flexibility and size they required and were

uninspired by the design of conventional wagons and medium size SUV’s. The Touring concept has

now also expanded in to other models in the Peugeot range - 407 Touring and the 207 Touring.

Today the Touring model designation is synonymous with a truly modern lifestyle car within the

Peugeot range which offers both dynamic styling and road holding. It also symbolises practicality,

versatility, generous interior space and carrying capacity, all combined with superb modularity.

Globally almost 940,000 307 Tourings were produced. The model proved very popular in

Australia at a time where consumers were beginning to look at down sizing without losing

the practicality and space of their larger cars. With stylish looks and the high levels of safety,

comfort and convenience normally only found in larger cars, the 307 Touring accounted for

over 40% of all 307 sales.

Page 21: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

Styledynamic, modern, with the promise of space and practicality

The 308 Hatchback and Touring naturally share the same design at the front. Depending on

the model, however, the lower front panel is available in two different styles, as on the

hatchback.

• A “Classic” front design featuring a grille with two chrome bars;

• A “Sport” front design with a more dynamic profile and an aluminium coloured grille;

All Touring models are fitted as standard with roof bars in a “smoked aluminium” finish

which adds to the fluidity of the overall design and also create a dash of elegance to support

the high perceptible quality of the vehicle.

Page 22: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KIT | 21

All the creativity of the Peugeot design

team is very evident when looking at

the rear of the 308 Touring through its

visual strength, originality and its modern

appearance.

The idea for the shape of the rear tailgate

glass emerged at a very early stage, well

before the “308 Touring” project got

under way. The rear tailgate glass has

a particularly large surface area and a

very pronounced curvature which also

continues round to the sides of the

vehicle.

The original design was an instant hit with

the teams responsible for designing the

308 Touring. The design and shape of the

rear tailgate glass has also made it possible

to incorporate many new features and

benefits.

Firstly, it gives an innovative and dynamic

look to the rear of the vehicle, which

mirrors to some extent that of the 407

and 207 Tourings. It also allows for a

larger load capacity and more space in the third row of seats. In addition, it guarantees a

generous level of rear interior light and visibility and minimises blind spots, whilst still keeping

within the overall Touring concept.

While the engineers had to meet the technical challenge of producing the rear tailgate glass

the designers had to also ensure its shape was consistent with the car’s overall styling.

Page 23: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

Structure

The 308 Touring is based on platform 2 of the PSA Peugeot Citroën group. Straight away this

gives the Touring, like the hatchback a very solid foundation for its development.

The platform benefits from exceptional rigidity and therefore provides the best possible

location for the mechanical assemblies and the suspension, but also provides excellent noise and

vibration suppression.

Compared to the hatchback, the wheelbase of the 308 Touring 100 mm longer and the rear

overhang is increased by 124 mm.

Page 24: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KIT | 23

The 308 Touring shares the same front structure, windscreen, front doors and the floor pan

as far as the sill panels, with the hatchback.

There are, however, a number of structural differences specific to the Touring model, as follows:

• A longer rear under-floor which is now slightly inclined and able to accommodate up to

three seats in the second row and two in the third row positions.

• To take account of the new modularity, all four rear supporting cross members have been

modified compared to the 307 Touring to obtain an identical distance between all the seating

location points to allow a wide opening for easier access to the load area. The 308 Touring

also has a sectioned rear aperture which further enhances the overall body rigidity.

• The rear doors are specific to the Touring, which adds to the car’s overall style and

accessibility.

• Sharing a similar design as the 308 hatchback, the rear impact beam is made of aluminium

for enhanced performance and to reduce weight in order to minimise rear impact damage.

This also ensures the best possible repairability.

• The overall design takes into account the incorporation of a panoramic glass roof with a

surface area increased by 27% compared to those in 307 Touring models (glass roof was

not available in Australia). As a result, it extends well beyond the second row of seats. The

laminated glass panoramic roof has a total surface area of 1.68 m2 and increases the total

glazed area to 5.58m2.

The overall rigidity of the structure is 0.83 mrad under a torque of 100 daNm applied to

the “axles”. This is an improvement of nearly 15% compared to the 307 version. This ensures,

with the design and set up of the suspension, primary safety of the highest order thanks

to a level of road holding which aims to be the best in the segment.

Finally, the objective of increasing the level of safety while at the same time reducing its

impact on the weight of the vehicle, has led to extensive use (nearly 11%) of materials lighter

than normal steel, such as high-strength and ultra high-strength steel. Similarly, the bonnet, the

lower impact structure and the door reinforcements are all made of aluminium while the wings

and numerous other body components are manufactured from composite materials.

Along the same lines, the panoramic roof which is still manufactured from laminated glass for

maximum safety, is 5 kg lighter thanks to the use of new technology which allows the glass

thickness to be reduced to only 5 mm.

Page 25: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

24 | PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KIT

The external dimensions of the 308 Touring give the vehicle excellent interior space while

also allowing for a high level of safety and repairability. Similarly, as on the hatchback, to meet

the criteria of style and road holding, the wheel tracks are wider compared to those of the

307 Touring.

aerodynamics

To help reduce fuel consumption and emissions the aerodynamics of the 308 Touring have

been optimised and as a result the Cx drag coefficient is just 0.31. A lot of work has been

carried out in the wind tunnel to make this possible, despite the wider wheel tracks. The result

significantly improves on that of the 307 Touring (Cx 0.32).

Inside the CarBy cleverly combining the design of the 308 hatchback with the best of the 307 Touring, the

interior of the new model confirms what its original and dynamic body shape suggests – the

promise of genuine well-being inside the car.

The wide door openings provide access to a spacious, bright and ingenious interior that

radiates quality, and offers all occupants the promise of real enjoyment.

26 | PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KIT

The visibility inside the 308 Touring is impressive, especially with the panoramic glass roof which

ensures by day and also by night in town, a clear view of the sky or the stars. Due to the total

glazed surface area of 5.58 m2 , the vehicle has a real sense of unlimited space.

The 308 Touring is equipped with a panoramic glass roof which is one of the largest in the world,

30 cm longer than the roof fitted to the 307 Touring, a feature which undeniably added to the

appeal of the car.

This vast panoramic roof measuring 1.68 m2, reduces the size of the roof panel, and creates a

glazed surface area with a width of 877 mm, that now extends even further back improving the

vision of the second row passengers. The field of vision offered to third row passengers is also

considerably improved compared to that of the 307 Touring.

An electrically controlled sun blind with a one-touch safety auto-reverse function, provides shade

from the sun and is controlled by a switch next to the handbrake.

Page 28: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

With an overall rigidity

greater than that of a

steel panel, the panoramic

glass roof is assembled

from three layers of

dark-tinted glass with a

thickness of 2.10 + 0.76

+ 2.10 mm respectively.

The combination of the

different layers optimises

their performance in

terms of filtration, giving a

particularly pleasant view while at the same time limiting light and energy transmission into the

passenger compartment to 17 %.

The extraordinary all-round interior light levels of the 308 Touring are further enhanced by

its semi-tall architecture and its forward-positioned front windscreen, not to mention its low

profile and large rear tailgate glass.

The fitment of the front windscreen (1.48 m2) which is steeply inclined required the creation of

a special side window configuration. On each side, a fixed small quarter light window is located

in front of the exterior door mirrors, to enhance forward visibility. Behind this are the front

and rear door windows and a large rear quarter panel window.

Measuring 1.662 m in length, the curved and dark tinted rear tailgate glass provides the perfect

finishing touch to the rear of the 308 Touring. Its profile also enhances the feeling of space

enjoyed by the occasional occupants of the third row seats, while its performance in reducing

light transmission (40%) and energy transmission (24% compared to 43% for simple tinted glass)

also improves their comfort.

To help manage further any excessive light sources and provide greater privacy, dark tinted

rear door windows and rear quarter light windows, mirroring the level of tinting of the rear

tailgate glass, are fitted as standard.

Easy To use Modularity

Being comfortably seated in the 308 Touring is child’s play thanks to a combination of the

wide door openings, both at the front and rear, the generous head room in the rear and the

higher seating positions resulting from the car’s semi-tall architecture. This ease of use is

an important criteria for a vehicle designed to accommodate five occupants, or seven

occasionally, in the three rows of seats.

front Seats

The front seats share the same seat frame design as first seen on the 308 hatchback, and in

Touring guise are in the form of a supportive sports style.

The seats have been meticulously designed to offer an attractive style, good postural comfort and

excellent impact resistance and are sufficiently compact to maximise the space available to the

rear passengers.

Page 30: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KIT | 29

Like the hatchback, they are installed slightly lower than in the 307 Touring (-15 mm), however,

occupants can still adjust the seat to their preferred height (- 37 mm to +13 mm) thanks to

the active seat height adjustment mechanism. The fore and aft movement of 230 mm ensures

adequate leg room is available for all occupants.

On the XSE versions, the front seats are also

equipped with a lumbar adjustment function.

Strengthening the “leisure” concept and the

modular flexibility of the 308 Touring, the front

seats also have a number of special features:

Built into the rear of the seats are “airline” style

folding trays for the second row passengers.

These trays also incorporate a pen holder and

cup / can holder. There is also a storage pocket

able to accommodate magazines and maps.

The passenger seat can also be folded flat.

This ability allows items up to a length of

3.10 m to be carried between the fascia panel

and the rear tailgate. The front seats also benefit

from all the work carried out by the designers

and ergonomics experts for the 308 hatchback. The 308 Touring therefore, offers the same

generous elbow width and headroom.

Page 31: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

30 | PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KIT

Individual Rear Seats

The three individual rear seats in the second row are identical in size with an individual

width of 414 mm, a specification which sets them apart from those of the 307 model.

They are manufactured by the “in situ” foam method and are also mounted on special

absorbent material to reduce the transmission of vibration and noise.

They are highly adjustable so make it easy to obtain a comfortable seating position and can

be adapted to meet the requirements of many different users. Each seat is interchangeable,

height adjustable, and can slide, recline, fold and be moved to the third row if required, or be

removed completely to allow the transportation of exceptionally bulky items.

Sliding

The second row seats slide over a distance of 90 mm (70 mm forward and 20 mm rearward with

respect to the nominal position) by means of a lever, increasing rear leg room or creating extra

space in the load area.

Page 32: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

reclining

The seat backrests can be reclined through an angle of between 19° and 30° through several

positions, allowing each passenger to adjust individually the angle at which they are most

comfortable.

These adjustments can be made via the four seat control straps (two at the front of the seat and

two at the rear) which remain readily accessible whichever seat is occupied.

“loadable” Shelf Configuration

With the backs of all the seats folded flat. The resulting “shelf configuration” provides a

rigid carpeted surface which can be “loaded” with luggage or with non-fragile objects.

Page 33: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

32 | PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KIT

folding

Each seat can be folded and tilted against the front seat (without the need to remove the head

restraints) either to free up space in the load area, facilitate access to the occasional seats in the

third row, or simply to assist in getting out of the car.

Simply by folding the backrest onto the seat cushion by means of the seat control strap, the

seat retracts automatically by the required distance into the folded position (note that this

“fully automatic retraction” (FAR) represents a considerable advance compared to the

307 Touring). All that is required next is to raise the large lever located behind the seat.

This operation releases the rear anchorage points of the seat, which then lifts up automatically.

Changeable and removable

Once in the folded position, the seats can then be removed. A red release strap simultaneously

unlocks the two metal retaining clamps which secure each seat to the vehicle structure. The

seats can then be lifted out by means of the inbuilt carrying handle.

As the second row is now equipped with three individual seats, a number of possibilities are

available: all seats removed, just one seat, two adjacent seats or two central seats. The latter

configuration creating a very pleasant “pullman effect”.

Passengers in the second row benefit from a spacious interior with a length of 1716 mm.

As in the hatchback, they benefit from the compact dimensions of the front seats which allow

more room for their legs and ankles. Also the top of the door panels has been shaped as far as

possible to optimise the available width which, at 1427 mm, represents an increase of 42 mm

compared to the 308 hatchback and enables an elbow width of 1471 mm.

Page 34: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

a Third row of Occasional Seats

Through necessity… or preference… any of the second row seats can also be installed in one

of the two third row seat locations, either on the left or on the right. A child up to 1.70 m tall

can then have a lot of fun creating their own private world in the back of the car and also enjoy

a generous elbow width of 1225 mm.

Occasional Third row Seats

The two occasional third row seats are designed specifically for the third row (a special

locating mechanism prohibits their installation elsewhere). They are available as an option for all

versions. They are also supplied with a kit that includes two armrests with inbuilt cup holders,

that can be installed onto the top of the two inner wheel arches, improving comfort and the

well-being of the third row occupants but, without penalising load space when the seats are not

installed.

Page 35: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

34 | PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KIT

Each of the occasional seats creates

a compact and rigid structure when

folded and can be stored on the

boot floor. With the seat folded,

the seat cushion is contained

within its own housing and folds

tightly against the seat back. When

unfolded the seat back benefits

from an assistance system that

raises the seat cushion from its

housing by a few millimetres to

offer the best possible compromise

between comfort and space.

Each folded seat can also be tilted and retained vertically

against the second row seat, by means of the integral elastic

retaining strap which attaches to the head restraint support

bars of the second row seat.

These seats can of course be completely removed from the

vehicle, however, like those in the second row they are also

designed to support items loaded into the load area when

folded.

To enable this, each of the third row seats are equipped

with a rigid carpeted Velcro cover which unfolds to create

a continuous, generous flat load

surface, able for example to

accommodate a bicycle with the

seats in the third and second rows

folded. This rigid cover is designed

to withstand a load of up to 30 kg.

36 | PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KIT

The load area is a large regular shape which is perfectly flat, fully carpeted, and has a smooth

finish that is easy to clean and offers a high level of perceptible quality. The stainless-steel

trimmed load sill is only 548 mm from the ground and is among the lowest available, enabling

heavy objects to be loaded with ease over a length of 1032 mm.

With the rear load space cover in place, its capacity varies from 600 to 674 litres depending on

the position of the sliding rear seats.

Among the best on the market, the height under the rear load space cover (559 mm) offers

unimpeded storage capacity (no false floor and a spare wheel located under the rear floor and

accessible by a special winch) and is both very practical and spacious.

With the rear load space cover removed and stored, the load volume to the roof increases to

911 or 1031 litres according to how the seats are positioned while still retaining the ability to seat

five people in the vehicle.

The exceptional modularity of the 308 Touring offers numerous combinations that will allow the

boot volume to be modified as required. For example, with only the front seats in place, two

people can take with them 1388 litres of luggage (to the height of the backrests). This capacity can

be increased to 2149 litres by loading up to roof level.

Page 38: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KIT | 37

The practical nature of the boot is demonstrated further

by the cleverness of its internal fittings:

• In the floor, two retaining eyes manufactured from

nickel plated steel are supplemented by four others

on the floor and on the rear load space cover

supports, enabling an elastic “cargo net” to be fitted

in a number of different ways, either flat, vertically, or

even as a hammock

• On the left-hand side, under the rear quarter panel,

a closed storage space with a volume of more than

a litre can hold numerous objects such as games

consoles, mobile phone, portable music player, etc...

• An elastic strap installed on the right hand wheel

arch can be used to secure carried objects

• Two retaining nets are also installed behind the wheel

arches

• A rechargeable portable torch is clipped to the trim

behind the right-hand storage net

• A 12v connector is installed in the right-hand rear

load space cover support

• Two retaining hooks are mounted on the exterior

of the rear load space cover supports, from which

supermarket type carrier bags can be suspended;

Mirroring the flexibility of the car’s interior modularity,

a number of options are available to gain access to the

load area:

• Via the opening of the rear tailgate which lifts upwards

to an angle of 93°. This creates a wide opening

with regular and generous dimensions, a width of

1123 mm at the bottom and 1058 mm at the top,

plus a height of 840 mm at the mid point. With a

load sill height of only 548 mm, one of the lowest in

the segment, the 308 Touring makes it easy to load

heavy objects.

rear load Space Cover

The innovative rear load space cover consists of a metal bar and a flexible roller blind

with an access flap. This access flap has a handle with which it can be opened, thereby

allowing partial access to the load area. The rear load space cover can be removed and stored

behind the wheel arches by sliding down the small side storage nets.

Easy To Communicate

A tangible sign of the low interior noise levels found in the 308 Touring is that passengers in the

third row seats can easily hold a conversation with the occupants of the first row.

The design of the interior and the large panoramic glass roof enhance this very pleasant

environment by relaying speech without the need for raised voices.

To enable this, during the design of the vehicle all sources of potential noise have been

located and then addressed.

As on the 308 hatchback, the structure has been designed and optimised in terms of rigidity to

reduce wind noise, combined with a strong emphasis on sound proofing the rear of the vehicle.

For example, all hollow areas have been treated with special expanding “inserts” and meticulous

attention has been paid to the design of the body seals and interior trim parts.

Good vibration suppression also enhances in-car comfort. Therefore, the rear torsion beam

has been designed to suppress as much as possible any vibration transmission. Also the rear

torsion beam mountings are also constructed from two different types of material and the rear

upper shock absorber mountings have also been specially designed.

The choice of sound proofing material and the design of the acoustic barriers are all shared with

the 308 hatchback but are used in greater quantities and specially adapted to this new body

shape. The bulkhead, floor pan, sides of the load area, doors, underside of the seats and the

roof have all received special attention. Acoustic barriers and sound proofing material are also

incorporated into the rear air extraction vents to reduce any possible generation of noise from

the vents.

The risk of noise from movable items has also been minimised, as on the 308 hatchback.

Page 41: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

For example the seat belts have been specially

adapted for the 308 Touring.

The 308 Touring is available with seven inertia

reel seat belts as standard, all designed to meet

the following requirements: ease of use, no

restriction to visibility or modularity, and no

unwanted noise when the seat belt is not being

used.

The seatbelt for the centre seat in row two is

installed in the roof and is held when not in

use by a magnetic retainer. The seatbelts of the

two third row seats are also held by magnetic

retainers (on the rear quarter panels).

In-Car-Entertainment

The 308 Touring is designed to satisfy the expectations of its occupants in terms of comfort

and user-friendliness while at the same time ensuring maximum safety. This pleasant interior

ambience is, therefore, also ideal for listening to the various high quality in-car-entertainment

systems that are available for the 308 Touring.

• The RD4 audio system – fully compatible with MP3 formatted music tracks, features

6 speakers and speed related volume control.

• The RT4 Multi-media system - A “Four-in-one” travel companion, this multi-media

system uses a 30 GB hard disc, voice synthesis and recognition and conveys information via a

new retractable large colour display using modern 3D graphics. This system is available as an

option only on XSE models.

42 | PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KIT

It comprises of:

• A GPS navigation system with full mapping

• Tri-tuner audio system offering state-of-the-art audio and multimedia functions including a “Jukebox” function which enables the user to store up to 180 hours of music tracks in MP3 format on the hard drive

• An integrated GSM telephone which permits hands-free communication

• Auxiliary audio/video input sockets in the glove box allow the connection of portable electrical equipment (ipod, video camera, etc)

• A retractable colour display: At the cutting edge of modern technology, the retractable colour display deploys to welcome the driver when

the ignition is switched on. Its carefully designed mechanism allows three different angular positions and, when the ignition key is removed, the assembly retracts after memorising the last selected position. The display screen can also be inclined manually.

Both systems in XSE versions can be combined with:

• The Bluetooth® hands-free kit – Combined with the RD4 audio system, this system can recognise a Bluetooth mobile phone present in the car, capture its main functions and transfer them to the car. Drivers can then use their mobile phone without handling it, making the most of the capabilities of the vehicle’s in-car-entertainment system.

In-Car ambience

With an interior space able to

accommodate passengers in three

rows of seats and one of the largest

panoramic roofs on the market,

internal temperature control within

the 308 Touring called for particular

attention. Large amounts of air can

be distributed throughout the interior

via the five fascia mounted air vents,

heating ducts under the fascia panel

directed towards the front occupant’s

feet, and two adjustable air vents for the rear passengers. In addition, the 308 Touring benefits

from a new and even more powerful air conditioning system, first seen on the hatchback. It

features a dust and pollen filter and automatic dual zone air conditioning with an active

charcoal filter which also eliminates certain hydrocarbon odours.

On all versions, the dark-

tinted rear side windows

(rear door windows

and rear quarter panel

windows) also help to

regulate the temperature

inside the car.

Storage Spaces

Evidence of the careful attention paid to the comfort and

convenience of the car’s occupants, storage spaces in the

308 Touring are numerous and ingenious.

A glove box with a lid which has assisted opening and closing

and dedicated storage spaces for glasses, mobile phone,

maps, and the like. The glove box temperature can also be

controlled via the air conditioning system. Connectors for

portable audio or video equipment (RT4) are installed on

the left-hand side.

The centre console provides storage space which is lined

with a noise reduction material. It can accommodate keys

or a mobile phone and has two recesses for cups or drinks cans. The rear section also includes

an adjustable central armrest which includes a covered 2.12 litre storage space able to hold six

CDs or a variety of different objects. Lastly there is a “waste bin” with an opening lid which is

accessible to both the front and the rear passengers.

The front and rear door

pockets offer a total volume

of nearly 15 litres in which to

keep maps, guides and other

objects within hand’s reach. The

front door pockets can hold a

1.5 litre bottle of water in the

upright position, while those at

the rear can accommodate a

500 ml bottle.

Interior lighting

The 308 Touring features all the originality of the 308 hatchback in terms of courtesy lighting.

• When the car is unlocked by means of the remote control, the welcome lighting (adjustable)

illuminates the passenger compartment and switches on the dipped beam to illuminate the

approach to the car

• When the door is opened, the door sill lights are activated (under the door trim) and also

the footwell lighting

• When the car is locked by means of the remote control, the dipped beam headlamps remain

on (follow me home) for several seconds (the time period is fully adjustable)

• The ambient lighting (XSE version) – activated / de-activated via the vehicle’s configuration

menu) comprises low intensity footwell lighting and an ambient LED in the roof console. The

rear passengers benefit from side mounted reading lamps

In the rear load area of the 308 Touring there are several light sources to meet the most varied

situations. They are cleverly arranged to ensure that at least one of them is operational according

to the car’s occupancy or load configuration.

A light is positioned at the rear of the roof which illuminates the load area.

A second light is located in the left-hand trim panel of the load area and provides light from just

below the load space cover.

A third light source originates from the “portable torch” located in the right-hand wheel arch

trim panel. This light illuminates the right-hand part of the load area. This “portable torch” can

be removed from its location when working outside the car. It is equipped with a rechargeable

battery which is recharged whilst the car is being driven.

Driving AidsInstalled in the driver’s seat which has been designed by ergonomic experts – height and depth

adjustable steering wheel, seat with multiple adjustments - the driver of a 308 Touring has a

range of technology and driving assistance systems to provide comfort and driving enjoyment in

complete safety:

• The excellent ¾ rear visibility provided by the large rear tailgate glass and the shape of the

rear quarter panels

• Large door mirrors and flat blade “butterfly” windscreen wipers

• All information in the direct line of sight from the instrument panel with its four dials with

chrome surrounds (trip computer, alarm pictograms, indications for cruise control or speed

limiter, reminder of GPS instructions where relevant)

• The impulse activated direction indicators which can be made to flash just three times – ideal

for freeway driving

• The 3rd LED brake light at the top of the tailgate and automatic activation of the hazard

warning lights in the event of an emergency braking situation

• The low level windscreen washer reservoir indicator

• A variable cruise control coupled with a speed limiter

rear Parking assistance

Standard on XSE versions, it offers valuable assistance for parking manoeuvres and personal

safety, and emits an audible signal that increases in volume as the obstacle approaches through

the vehicle’s radio speaker nearest the obstacle.

The system is activated when reverse gear is engaged and the speed is less than 10 km/h.

For vehicles fitted with the RT4 Multi-media system, the remaining distance is also shown graphically

as zones of varying colour on the fascia display screen.

SafetyThe 308 Touring benefits

from the same structural

design features which

were first seen on

the 308 hatchback. It

has been designed to

withstand the severest

of impacts and to absorb

the impact forces in a

controlled manner.

The protective structure

is also supplemented

by a number of highly

efficient restraint systems, and also an ingenious “Wi-Fi” system which enables a fasten seat

belt warning function to be fitted to the individual removable rear seats.

front impact

While much of the steel monocoque structure is the same as the 307 Touring, the engine

compartment has been entirely redesigned with, in particular the use of a three-way impact

absorption structure.

The lower structure, created by adding two extensions to the front sub-frame, supplements the

traditional upper structure formed by the chassis legs. This principle, borrowed from the 407,

also helps to provide better pedestrian impact protection. In addition the inclusion of a third

structure, consisting of a reinforced area above the front wheel arches forming an extension of

the windscreen pillars and door panel stiffeners complete the specification and ensure optimal

impact energy absorption.

Other systems protecting the occupants of the 308 Touring include:

• The retractable steering column

• Two adaptive front air bags, 60 litres for the driver and 90 litres for the passenger

• An 18 litre steering column air bag (optional on XSE versions)

• Seven three-point inertia reel seat belts - equipped at the front with pretensioners and force

limiters.

Side impact

The full complement of safety equipment found on the hatchback is available to protect

occupants in the event of a side impact, with in particular :

• A ‘B’ post with extra reinforcement thanks to the adoption of a “multi-layer” construction

technique (three individual layers of sheet steel, two of which are high strength steel)

• Aluminium side impact protection bars, door panel stiffeners and internal protective

padding in all four doors. Similarly, the sides of the body are fully braced and numerous cross

members spanning the exterior side sills enhance the vehicle’s rigidity

• Two 12 litre side air bags to protect the chest and pelvis of the front passengers

• Two 30 litre curtain air bags to protect the heads of front and rear passengers

rear impact

At the level of the boot sill, an aluminium alloy impact beam is fitted to absorb any impacts and

ensure a good level of repairability.

fasten Seat belt warning for The rear Seats

To incorporate the “fasten seat belt warning” function on each of the individual 2nd row seats,

whilst still preserving their modularity and the ability to remove them from the car, the 308

Touring benefits from an innovative and original solution. This system allows information to be

sent wirelessly, similar to a Wi-Fi computer network, between the individual seat and the car. It

comprises of two modules, one in the seat and one in the floor of the car, so that data relating

to the fastening and unfastening of the seat belts can be transmitted when the seat is installed.

Naturally this function is guaranteed regardless of which row 2 seat configuration is chosen.

the 308 Touring is available with a wide choice of power train options.

All engines have four cylinders and benefit from the most advanced technologies in their

category and all feature a cylinder head with two overhead camshafts and sixteen valves. For

example, the 1.6 litre petrol turbo engine recently was voted it’s class winner for the second year

running at the International Engine of the Year Awards.

Thanks to these high-performance power trains, the 308 Touring offers very economical options

for a car of this size and nature, and as a consequence have excellent levels of CO2 emissions

compared to the national average of 285 g/km (according to figures from the Dept of Climate

Change and the ABS).

The 308 Touring 1.6 litre HDi 80 kW version emits only 139 g/km of CO2, whilst the XSE

version fitted with the 1.6 litre HDi 100 kW engine, generates CO2 emissions of 155 g/km in the

combined cycle.

Petrol Engines

The 308 Touring is equipped with the complete range of petrol engines designed and

developed as part of the co-operation between PSA Peugeot Citroën and the BMW Group.

Whether the VTi or THP version, they all benefit from innovative technology which is not normally

found on this size of engine.

VTi Technology (Variable Valve Lift and Timing injection)

The technical content of these indirect injection petrol engines is a real first for this size of

engine. In addition to the variable timing system for the inlet and exhaust camshafts, a variable

inlet valve lift system allows the valve opening distance to be adjusted gradually according to the

position of the accelerator pedal. The combination of these two VVT systems and the variable

inlet valve lift system improves the engine’s thermodynamic efficiency by significantly reducing

fuel consumption (particularly in phases of partial load) and therefore CO2 emissions, but also

guaranteeing improved response and greater engine flexibility.

1.6 Litre VTi 88 kW – EP6 / Four Speed Automatic Gearbox

The 1.6 litre VTi has a maximum power of 88 kW at 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 160

Nm at 4,250 rpm. This torque, however, is available very uniformly, since even at low engine

speeds (2,000 rpm), it produces 88 % of its maximum torque output. This ensures excellent

driveability as well as reduced fuel consumption and emissions.

This engine gives the 308 Touring an enhanced dynamic performance while at the same time

offering a fuel consumption of 7.7 litres per 100km in the combined cycle.

THP Technology (Turbo High Pressure)

THP engines are characterised by their excellent flexibility and their high maximum torque

available from very low engine speeds.

The innovative Twin-Scroll turbocharger combines the flow of the exhaust gases from the

engine in an optimal fashion to ensure maximum performance of the turbocharger turbine and

therefore ensures a very high level of driveability. The use of High-pressure direct petrol injection

technology improves both the engine’s combustion and overall efficiency.

PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KIT | 53

1.6 Litre THP 103 kW with a Four Speed Automatic Gearbox

With a capacity of 1,598 cm3, a power of 103 kW at 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of

240 Nm, available from an engine speed of only 1,400 rpm, it gives the 308 Touring remarkable

driveability at low engine speeds. The use of this technology is the key to a remarkable

compromise between performance and fuel consumption. Fuel consumption has, therefore, been

limited to 8.2 litres per 100km in the combined cycle.

HDi Diesel Engines

In terms of diesel, the 308 Touring is available with two diesel engine options, all 4-cylinder and

featuring the latest HDi technology, widely acknowledged for its high levels of driveability and

performance but also for its low running costs.

These engines are equipped with a variable geometry turbocharger and use high pressure

direct injection technology (up to 1,600 bar for the 1.6 litre HDi and 1,650 for the 2.0 litre

HDi). Another innovative technology: the six aperture piezo-electric diesel injectors which

can inject a fine spray of fuel into the combustion chamber, ensuring optimal fuel delivery in both

terms of quantity and injection duration.

Lastly, an additive-enhanced Diesel Particulate Filter System (FAP) is available as standard on both

engines.

1.6 Litre HDi FAP 110 bhp – DV6TED4 - Six Speed Manual Gearbox

Delivering a maximum power of 80 kW at 4,000 rpm, this HDi engine with a diesel particulate

filter system is both lively and flexible, offering a maximum torque of 240 Nm from 1,750 rpm

which can be increased temporarily to 260 Nm thanks to the “overboost” function.

This engine offers an excellent compromise between performance and economy. Its fuel

consumption is 5.3 litres per 100km in the combined cycle, with CO2 emissions of 139 g/km.

Page 55: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

2.0 Litre HDi FAP 100 kW – DW10BTED4 - Six Speed Manual or Automatic

Gearbox

With a capacity of 1,997 cm3, the “DW10B” develops a maximum power of 100 kW at

4,000 rpm and a generous maximum torque of 320 Nm at 2,000 rpm or 340 Nm with

“overboost”.

This engine gives the 308 Touring a real dynamism to enable it to exploit its high levels of road

holding, while at the same time limiting fuel consumption.

Page 56: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

The gearbox has been designed to meet a very high specification in terms of functionality,

durability and size.

In terms of operation, the most efficient technical solutions were employed to provide the

driver with a smooth and precise gear change. This consists of:

• Theuseof“BorgWarner”synchromeshunitsforallsixgearsincludingreversegear.

• For first and second gear, the use of the“triple cone” synchromesh units incorporating

‘three-bearing’ surfaces to improve gear changes under the most demanding circumstances.

A patented “double ball” detent system for improved gear selection, as it allows a smoother

and more precise gear change, plus improved ‘feel’ when the selected gear is engaged.

Weighing 45 kg, this new transmission, installed transversally in the vehicle, is as compact as

a five speed manual gearbox, so prevents any adverse effect on the vehicle’s steering lock.

“Porsche Tiptronic System” Sequential automatic gearbox

Two automatic gearboxes are available in the 308 Touring, both with “Porsche Tiptronic System”

sequential control. These gearboxes will appeal to customers who require greater convenience

and ease of use, while still having the option to drive more actively via the sequential mode.

An “AL4” four speed automatic gearbox will be available on all the petrol versions. The gear-

shift commands of this gearbox have been calibrated to optimise fuel consumption and to offer

the best possible compromise between economy and responsiveness.

On the 2.0 litre HDi 100 kW model, the “AM6” automatic gearbox tops the 308 Touring diesel

range. Particularly dynamic and responsive, this six speed transmission exploits the engine’s

characteristics to the full.

GearboxesThe 1.6 litre HDi 80 kW and

103 kW engines are fitted on

the 308 Touring with an all

new “MCM” six speed manual

gearbox. Designed in-house, this

transmission is manufactured

in a new facility at the PSA

Peugeot Citroën Valenciennes

production site.

Suspension

Road holding that ensures a high level of driving enjoyment and active safety, is at the heart

of the design of all vehicles in the range. The aim as far as the 308 Touring is concerned was

to offer an optimal combination between comfort and road holding, in keeping with the car’s

dynamism and its use on a daily basis. The 308 Touring benefits structurally from excellent torsional

rigidity (0.83 mrad) which ensures optimal performance of its suspension. The latter, as on the

hatchback, consists of:

• An invertedMcPhersontype frontsuspensionwitha linkedanti-rollbarensuringrigorous

steering accuracy and a good level of vibration suppression.

• Therearsuspensionconsistsofatorsionbeam,twosuspensionarmsandanintegralanti-roll

bar, offering a very compact structure, good rigidity, vibration suppression and body control.

The 308 Touring also has a wider front and rear track width, in addition to increased wheel and

tyre widths (1/2 inch more than the 307), and a centre of gravity lowered by 10 mm compared

to its predecessor.

Page 58: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

All of these have a direct and positive effect on the car’s body strength, steering accuracy and

stability, both in a straight line and when slowing down or braking in curves.

The rear suspension set-up has been adapted to the special features of the 308 Touring to

take into account the car’s characteristics (weight, rear overhang, etc) and the use to which it will

be put, potentially higher loads could be carried and with a likelihood of travelling more often

with several people in the vehicle.

The 308 Touring also benefits from revised shock absorber settings and spring rates, plus

the fitment of composite material front mountings that are 20% stiffer in all respects compared

to the hatchback.

Page 59: PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KITd3d6mf6ofxeyve.cloudfront.net/wieckautodeadline60/files...The 308 hatch, Peugeot’s first version of the new 308 was launched in Australia in April 2008.

58 | PEUGEOT 308 TOURING PRESS KIT

SteeringThe same rack and pinion steering set-up as the hatchback is used, guaranteeing a high level

of accuracy and feedback. Its variable assistance is controlled by a hydraulic electro-pump unit

(GEP) in which assistance varies according to the speed of the car, the speed of rotation of the

steering wheel and the temperature of the power steering fluid, thereby ensuring continuously

variable assistance levels. Two types of GEP are available on the 308 Touring, ensuring optimal

compatibility with the engine options and the weight of the individual versions. This ensures

smoother steering and improved operation during manoeuvring. For example, the 308 Touring

2.0 litre HDi has a GEP unit with an output of 650 Watts while that of other engines has an

output of 575 Watts.
