A Service of Holy Communion
from The Book of Common Prayer (BCP)
Greeting: The Lord be with you.
AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)
Sentence: Who shall stand in the Lord’s holy place? Those who have clean hands
and pure hearts, who do not lift up their hands to what is false.
Psalm 24.3–4
Prayer of Preparation:
Let us pray together: (the congregation kneel or sit)
ALMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts be open, all
desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid;
Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Summary of the Commandments:
Priest: Our Lord Jesus Christ said: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord;
and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and
with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And
the second is like, namely this: thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is
none other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments
hang all the Law and the Prophets.’
People: Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts,
we beseech thee.
Prayer of the Day
Eternal God,
open our eyes to see your hand at work
in the splendour of creation
and in the beauty of human life.
Help us to cherish the gifts that surround us,
to share our blessings with our sisters and brothers,
and to experience the joy of life in your presence;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)
First Reading: 2 Samuel 6.1-5, 12-19
1 David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2 David
and all the people with him set out and went from Baale-judah, to bring up
from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts
who is enthroned on the cherubim. 3 They carried the ark of God on a new
cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill.
Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart 4 with the
ark of God; and Ahio went in front of the ark. 5 David and all the house of
Israel were dancing before the Lord with all their might, with songs and
lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals. 12 It was told
King David, ‘The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that
belongs to him, because of the ark of God.’ So David went and brought up
the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the city of David with
rejoicing; 13 and when those who bore the ark of the Lord had gone six
paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling. 14 David danced before the Lord
with all his might; David was girded with a linen ephod. 15 So David and all
the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting, and with
the sound of the trumpet. 16 As the ark of the Lord came into the city of
David, Michal daughter of Saul looked out of the window, and saw King
David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her
heart. 17 They brought in the ark of the Lord, and set it in its place, inside
the tent that David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt-offerings and
offerings of well-being before the Lord . 18 When David had finished
offering the burnt-offerings and the offerings of well-being, he blessed the
people in the name of the Lord of hosts, 19 and distributed food among all
the people, the whole multitude of Israel, both men and women, to each a
cake of bread, a portion of meat, and a cake of raisins. Then all the people
went back to their homes.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD
4
Psalm: 24
1 The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it:
the compass of the world and those who dwell therein.
2 For he has founded it upon the seas:
and established it upon the waters.
3 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord:
or who shall stand in his holy place?
4 Those who have clean hands and a pure heart:
who have not set their soul upon idols, nor sworn their oath to a lie.
5 They shall receive blessing from the Lord:
and recompense from the God of their salvation.
6 Of such a kind as this are those who seek him:
those who seek your face, O God of Jacob.
7 Lift up your heads, O you gates, and be lifted up, you everlasting doors:
and the King of glory shall come in.
8 Who is the King of glory?:
the Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, O you gates, and be lifted up, you everlasting doors:
and the King of glory shall come in.
10 Who is the King of glory?:
the Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.
Second Reading: Ephesians 1.1-14
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in
Ephesus and are faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our
Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the
heavenly places, 4 just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the
world to be holy and blameless before him in love. 5 He destined us for
adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of
his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the
Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our
trespasses, according to the riches of his grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all
wisdom and insight 9 he has made known to us the mystery of his will,
according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, 10 as a plan for the
fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on
earth. 11 In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined
according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his
counsel and will, 12 so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ,
5
might live for the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you had heard
the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were
marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14 this is the pledge of our
inheritance towards redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD
We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet our
Lord who is present in His Holy Word.
The Lord be with you
AND ALSO WITH YOU
The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Mark chapter 6 beginning
at the 14th
verse.
GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.
14 King Herod heard of it, for Jesus’ name had become known. Some were
saying, ‘John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; and for this reason
these powers are at work in him.’ 15 But others said, ‘It is Elijah.’ And others
said, ‘It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.’ 16 But when Herod heard
of it, he said, ‘John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.’ 17 For Herod himself
had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account
of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod had married her. 18 For
John had been telling Herod, ‘It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.’
19 And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could
not, 20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man,
and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he
liked to listen to him. 21 But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday
gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. 22
When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his
guests; and the king said to the girl, ‘Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will
give it.’ 23 And he solemnly swore to her, ‘Whatever you ask me, I will give you,
even half of my kingdom.’ 24 She went out and said to her mother, ‘What should
I ask for?’ She replied, ‘The head of John the baptizer.’ 25 Immediately she
rushed back to the king and requested, ‘I want you to give me at once the head
of John the Baptist on a platter.’ 26 The king was deeply grieved; yet out of
regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27
6
Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John’s head.
He went and beheaded him in the prison, 28 brought his head on a platter, and
gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples
heard about it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.
Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,
PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.
SERMON followed by a short time for reflection
(Copies of the sermon are available at the back of church)
The Nicene Creed
I BELIEVE in one God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth, And of all things visible and invisible:
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten son of God, Begotten of
his Father before all worlds, God of God,
Light of Light, Very God of very God, Begotten, not made,
Being of one substance with the Father, By whom all things were made: Who
for us men, and for our salvation came down from heaven, And was incarnate
by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary,
And was made man, And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He
suffered and was buried, And the third day he rose again according to the
Scriptures, And ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the
Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the
dead: Whose kingdom shall have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Ghost, The Lord and giver of life, Who
proceedeth from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son
together is worshipped and glorified, Who spake by the Prophets. And I believe
one Catholick and Apostolick Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the
remission of sins. And I look for the Resurrection of the dead, And the life of
the world to come. Amen.
Then shall the Priest say bible Sentences as he thinketh most convenient in his
discretion.
LET your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and
glorify your Father which is in heaven. St. Matth. v.
7
Then shall the Priest return to the Lord's Table, and begin the Offertory, the Alms
for the Poor, and other devotions of the people, shall be placed upon the holy
Table. And when there is a Communion, the Priest shall then place upon the Table
so much Bread and Wine, as he shall think sufficient. After which done, the Priest
shall say,
Gracious Lord, we pray that you accept these our gifts, and us your people,
for your service and to your glory. Amen.
Let us pray for the whole state of Christ's Church militant here in earth.
(the congregation kneel or sit).
ALMIGHTY and everliving God, who by thy holy Apostle hast taught us to make
prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all men; We humbly beseech
thee most mercifully to receive these our prayers, which we offer unto thy Divine
Majesty; beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit
of truth, unity, and concord: And grant, that all they who do confess thy holy Name
may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity, and godly love. We
beseech thee also to save and defend all Christian Kings, Princes, and Governors;
and specially thy Servant ELIZABETH our Queen; that under her we may be godly
and quietly governed: And grant unto her whole Council, and to all that are put in
authority under her, that they may truly and impartially administer justice, to the
punishment of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance of thy true religion,
and virtue. Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all Bishops and Curates, that they may
both by their life and doctrine set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and
duly administer thy holy Sacraments.
And to all thy people give thy heavenly grace; and especially to this congregation
here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear, and
receive thy holy Word; truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the
days of their life. And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to
comfort and succour all those who, in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow,
need, sickness, or any other adversity. We bless thy holy Name for all thy servants
departed this life in thy faith and fear, beseeching thee to give us grace so to
follow their good examples, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly
kingdom. Grant this, O Father, for Jesus Christ's sake, our only Mediator and
Advocate. Amen.

and all who care for them.
We give thanks for the life of Peter Human as we uphold him to your loving
mercy, and we pray for all who mourn his death.
We remember before God with thanksgiving the life of Keith Stanley (2006), as
we come to the anniversary of his entry into your nearer presence.
Then shall the Priest say to them that come to receive the Holy Communion,
YE that do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity
with your neighbours, and intend to lead a new life, following the
commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways; Draw near
with faith, and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble
confession to Almighty God.
9
Then shall this general Confession be made.
ALMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, judge of all
men; We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, Which
we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, By thought, word, and
deed, Against thy Divine Majesty, Provoking most justly thy wrath and
indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, And are heartily sorry for these
our misdoings; The remembrance of them is grievous unto us; The burden of
them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, Have mercy upon us, most merciful
Father; For thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, Forgive us all that is past; And
grant that we may ever hereafter Serve and please thee In newness of life, To
the honour and glory of thy Name; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Then shall the Priest, (or the Bishop, being present) standing up, and turning
himself to the people, pronounce this Absolution.
ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised
forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith
turn unto him; Have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your
sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to
everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Then shall the Priest say,
Hear what comfortable words our Saviour Christ saith unto all that truly turn
to him.
Come unto me all that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. St.
Matth. xi. 28.
So God loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that
all that believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
St. John iii. 16
Hear also what Saint Paul saith.
This is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received, that Christ Jesus
came into the world to save sinners. 1 Tim. i. 15.
Hear also what Saint John saith.
10
If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the
righteous; and he is the propitiation for our sins. 1 St. John ii. 1.
After which the Priest shall proceed, saying,
Lift up your hearts.
Answer. We lift them up unto the Lord.
Priest. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.
Answer. It is meet and right so to do.
Then shall the Priest say,
IT is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and
in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting
God.
THEREFORE with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of
heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee,
and saying,
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts,
heaven and earth are full of thy glory:
Glory be to thee, O Lord most High. Amen
Then all them that shall receive the Communion pray.
WE do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in
our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not
worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art
the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy: Grant us
therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat
the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful
bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his
most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in
us.
Amen.
11
When the Priest, standing before the Table, hath so ordered the Bread and Wine,
that he may with the more readiness and decency break the Bread before the
people, and take the Cup into his hands, he shall say the Prayer of Consecration,
as followeth.
ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine
only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the Cross for our redemption; who
made there a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for
the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us
to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death, until his coming
again; Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that
we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our
Saviour Jesus Christ's holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion,
may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood: who, in the same night
that he was betrayed, (a) took Bread; and, when he had given thanks, (b) he
brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, (c) this is my Body which is
given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.
Likewise after supper he (d) took the Cup; and, when he had given thanks, he
gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of this; for this (e) is my Blood of the New
Testament, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this,
as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me. Amen.
Jesus, Lamb of God. Have mercy on us.
Jesus, bearer of our sins. Have mercy on us.
Jesus, redeemer of the world. Grant us your peace.
Come, let us take this Holy Sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in
remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith
with thanksgiving.
Baptised Christians who receive communion in their own church
are invited to share communion with us today.
Communion wine may be received:
(a) from the common cup from the first of the two Eucharistic Assistants.
(b) by intinction from the second of the Eucharistic Assistants where a small part of
the wafer is carefully dipped in the wine, or
(c) from an individual glass on request from the first Eucharistic Assistant. Or you
may choose to receive the wafer only (Communion in one kind).
12
Let us pray in the words that our Lord Jesus Christ has taught us:
OUR Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
But deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
For ever and ever. Amen.
After shall be said by the Priest a prayer of thanksgiving.
Then shall be said by all, standing,
GLORY be to God on high,
and in earth peace, good will towards men.
We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee,
we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory,
O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty.
O Lord, the only begotten Son Jesu Christ;
O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.
Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that
takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the
right hand of God the Father,
have mercy upon us.
For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord;
thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost,
art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Then the Priest (or Bishop if he be present) shall let them depart with this
Blessing.
THE peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds
in the knowledge and love of God, and of his son Jesus Christ our Lord: and the
blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst
you and remain with you always. Amen.
