8:00am Holy Communion

10:30am Family Communion*

The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn*

1. Be still, for the presence of the Lord,

the Holy One, is here;

come bow before him now

with reverence and fear:

in him no sin is found –

we stand on holy ground.

Be still, for the presence of the Lord,

the Holy One is here.

2. Be still, for the glory of the Lord

is shining all around;

he burns with holy fire,

with splendour he is crowned:

how awesome is the sight –

our radiant King of light!

Be still, for the glory of the Lord

is shining all around.

3. Be still, for the power of the Lord

is moving in this place:

he comes to cleanse and heal,

to minister his grace.

No work too hard for him,

in faith receive from him.

Be still, for the power of the Lord

is moving in this place.

Words & Music: David J Evans (b 1957)

Collect

Almighty God, you have broken the tyranny of sin

and have sent the Spirit of your Son into our hearts

whereby we call you Father:

give us grace to dedicate our freedom to your service,

that we and all creation may be brought

to the glorious liberty of the children of God;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

4

First Reading – Job 38.1-11*

The LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind: ‘Who is this that darkens counsel by words

without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to

me. ‘Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have

understanding. Who determined its measurements – surely you know! Or who stretched the

line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning

stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? ‘Or who shut in the sea with

doors when it burst out from the womb? – when I made the clouds its garment, and thick

darkness its swaddling band, and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, and said,

“Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stopped”?

Second Reading – 2 Corinthians 6.1-13

As we work together with Christ, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in

vain. For he says, ‘At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of

salvation I have helped you.’ See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of

salvation! We are putting no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found

with our ministry, but as servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way:

through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments,

riots, labours, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness,

holiness of spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the

weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honour and dishonour,

in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as

unknown, and yet are well known; as dying, and see – we are alive; as punished, and yet

not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having

nothing, and yet possessing everything. We have spoken frankly to you Corinthians;

our heart is wide open to you. There is no restriction in our affections, but only in

yours. In return – I speak as to children – open wide your hearts also.

Gradual Hymn*

Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name; you are mine.

1. When you walk through the waters I’ll be with you. You will never sink beneath the waves.

2. When the fire is burning all around you, you will never be consumed by the flames.

3. When the fear of loneliness is looming, then remember I am at your side.

5

4. When you dwell in the exile of the stranger, remember you are precious in my eyes.

5. You are mine, O my child, I am your Father, and I love you with a perfect love.

Gospel – Mark 4.35-41

When evening had come, Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Let us go across to the other side.’

And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was.

Other boats were with him. A great gale arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that

the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and

they woke him up and said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’ He

woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!' Then the wind

ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, ‘Why are you afraid? Have you still

no faith?’ And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, ‘Who then is this,

that even the wind and the sea obey him?’

Offertory Hymn*

1. O changeless Christ, for ever new,

who walked our earthly ways,

still draw our hearts as once you drew

the hearts of other days.

2. As once you spoke by plain and hill

or taught by shore and sea,

so be today our teacher still,

O Christ of Galilee.

3. As wind and storm their Master heard

and his command fulfilled,

may troubled hearts receive your word,

the tempest-tossed be stilled.

4. And as of old who prayed

your healing hand was shown,

so be your touch upon us laid,

unseen but not unknown.

5. In broken bread, in wine outpoured,

your new and living way

proclaim to us, O risen Lord,

O Christ of this our day.

6. O changeless Christ, till life is past

your blessing still be given;

then bring us home, to taste at last

the timeless joys of heaven.

Communion Hymns*

1. Fierce raged the tempest o’er the deep

watch did thine anxious servants keep

but thou wast wrapped in guileless sleep,

calm and still.

2. ‘Save, Lord, we perish,’ was their cry,

‘O save us in our agony!’

Thy word above the storm rose high,

‘Peace, be still.’

3. The wild winds hushed; the angry deep

sank, like a little child, to sleep;

the sullen billows ceased to leap,

at thy will.

4. So, when our life is clouded o’er,

and storm winds drift us from the shore,

say, lest we sink to rise no more,

‘Peace, be still.’

Words: Godfrey Thring (1823-1903)

Music: St Aëlred, j B Dykes (1823-1876)

(Hymns Ancient & Modern New Standard – 225)

1. Be still and know that I am God,

be still and know that I am God,

be still and know that I am God.

2. I am the Lord that healeth thee,

I am the Lord that healeth thee,

I am the Lord that healeth thee.

3. In thee, O Lord, I put my trust,

In thee, O Lord, I put my trust,

In thee, O Lord, I put my trust.

Words: unknown, based on Psalm 46

Music: unknown, arr Adrian Vernon Fish

(Anglican Hymns Old & New – 61)

Post Communion Prayer

O God, whose beauty is beyond our imagining

and whose power we cannot comprehend:

show us your glory as far as we can grasp it,

and shield us from knowing more than we can bear

until we may look upon you without fear;

through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

7

Final Hymn*

Give thanks with a grateful heart.

give thanks to the Holy One.

give thanks because he’s given

Jesus Christ, his Son.

Give thanks with a grateful heart.

give thanks to the Holy One.

give thanks because he’s given

Jesus Christ, his Son.

And now let the weak say, ‘I am strong!’,

let the poor say, ‘I am rich

because of what the Lord has done for us!’

And now let the weak say, ‘I am strong’,

let the poor say, ‘I am rich

because of what the Lord has done for us!’

Give thanks…

Give thanks.

6:00pm Evensong

The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book, and the hymns are taken

Opening Hymn 461 – There's a wideness in God's mercy (tune – Corvedale AM 806)

Psalm 49.1-12 audite hic omnes G R Sinclair

1 O hear ye this | all ye | people :

ponder it with your ears all | ye that | dwell in ∙ the | world;

2 High and low | rich and | poor

— | one — | with an- | other.

3 My mouth shall | speak of | wisdom :

and my heart shall | muse of | un-der- | standing.

4 I will incline mine | ear ∙ to the | parable :

and shew my dark | speech up- | on the | harp.

5 Wherefore should I fear in the | days of | wickedness :

and when the wickedness of my heels | compasseth ∙ me | round a- | bout?

6 There be some that put their | trust ∙ in their | goods :

and boast themselves in the | multi-tude | of their | riches.

7 But no man may de- | liver ∙ his | brother :

nor make a- | greement ∙ unto | God — | for him;

8 For it cost more to re- | deem their | souls :

so that he must | let that ∙ a- | lone for | ever;

9 Yea | though he ∙ live | long :

and | see — | not the | grave.

10 For he seeth that wise men also die and | perish ∙ to- | gether :

as well as the ignorant and foolish, * and | leave their | riches ∙ for | other.

11a And | yet they | think

that their | houses ∙ shall con- | tinue ∙ for | ever :

11b and that their dwelling-places

shall endure from one gene- | ration ∙ to a- | nother;

and call the lands | after ∙ their | own — | names.

†12 Nevertheless man will not a- | bide in | honour :

seeing he may be compar’d

unto the beasts that | per-ish; | this is ∙ the | way of them.

Glory | be ∙ to the | Father,

and to the | Son and ∙ to the | Ho-ly | Ghost;

As it was in the beginning is | now and ∙ ever | shall be :

world | with-out | end, A- | men.

Office Hymn 365 – God moves in a mysterious way

Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis – set 9

Second Lesson – Romans 11.25–36

Anthem

Jesu, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly,

while the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high.

Hide me, O my Saviour, hide, till the storm of life is past;

safe into the haven guide, O receive my soul at last.

Other refuge have I none; hangs my helpless soul on thee;

leave, ah, leave me not alone, still support and comfort me.

All my trust on thee is stayed; all my help from thee I bring;

cover my defenceless head with the shadow of thy wing.

Plenteous grace with thee is found, grace to cover all my sin;

let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within.

Thou of life the fountain art; freely let me take of thee;

spring thou up within my heart, rise to all eternity. Amen.

Nepal Appeal Update

To all who donated personally to the

Nepal Appeal of The Paldorje Sherpa

Foundation through Sherpa Adventure

Gear and especially for the generous

donation of All Saints’ Church PCC of

£250 I thought you would like to see a

recent message from Tashi who is the

CEO of Sherpa Adventure Gear. From

this and other countries nearly

£150,000 has been raised. My son,

Toby, met with Tashi and the

production team recently in Seattle

(Adventure Gear is sold in America

too). He said that they were somewhat

short of samples for next season’s

clothing due to the workers making

14

tents and shelters out of the existing

waterproof shell fabric normally used

for jackets in the factory (1000 metres

of it!) and blankets from the fleece

fabric. However new clothing sales

need to surge ahead so that the factory

workers have work for the future. That

is what Toby is focusing on now. Thank

you for your support and interest. Beryl

Kirtland.

Thank you for your contribution to the

Paldorje Fund. We are humbled by the

outpouring of support we have received

from around the world to help the people

of Nepal. It warms our hearts and gives us

hope and positive energy as we work to

rebuild the country, the villages, the small

businesses and homes of so many people.

You designated your contribution to provide

relief efforts in Nepal. We are pleased to

inform you that 100% of your contribution

is being used to help in these efforts for

items such as food, water, shelter,

medicine, clothing –anything that can save

lives and help people put their lives back

together again. We are Sherpa and we

believe in karma – what goes around

comes around – so we are eternally

grateful for your generosity and prayers.

Sincerely, Tashi Sherpa, Founder/CEO.

in strict confidence.
