11:00am Feast Festival Service and Baptism
The Greeting
The Lord be with you
and also with you.
This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Hymn
1. Morning has broken, like the first morning;
blackbird has spoken, like the first bird. Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning! Praise for them, springing fresh from the Word!
2. Sweet the rain's new fall sunlit from heaven, like the first dewfall on the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, sprung in completeness where his feet pass.
3. Mine is the sunlight! Mine is the morning
born of the one light Eden saw play! Praise with elation, praise every morning,
God's re-creation of the new day!
Words: Eleanor Farjeon (1881-1965) Music: Bunessan, Gaelic melody, arr Noel Tredinnick (b 1949)

Opening Responses
See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called the children of God.
You are my sons and daughters, this day I have begotten you.
See what love the Father has given us.
As many as received him, to them he gave power
to become the children of God. See what love the Father has given us.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called the children of God.
Prayers of Penitence
Sit or kneel
As children of a loving heavenly Father,
let us ask his forgiveness, for he is gentle and full of compassion.
Almighty God, our heavenly Father,
we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault.
We are truly sorry, and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us,
forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life
to the glory of your name. Amen.
The priest declares God’s forgiveness
5
The Collect
Almighty God, whose blessed apostles Peter and Paul
glorified you in their death as in their life: grant that your Church,
inspired by their teaching and example, and made one by your Spirit,
may ever stand firm upon the one foundation, Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
First Reading – Acts 12.1-11
King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. After he saw that it pleased the
Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the festival of Unleavened Bread.) When he had seized him, he put him in prison and handed him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the
Passover. While Peter was kept in prison, the church prayed fervently to God for him. The very night before Herod was going to bring him out, Peter, bound with two
chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while guards in front of the door were keeping watch over the prison. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light
shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him, saying, ‘Get up quickly.’ And the chains fell off his wrists. The angel said to him, ‘Fasten your belt and put on
your sandals.’ He did so. Then he said to him, ‘Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.’ Peter went out and followed him; he did not realize that what was
happening with the angel’s help was real; he thought he was seeing a vision. After they had passed the first and the second guard, they came before the iron gate
leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went outside and walked along a lane, when suddenly the angel left him. Then Peter came to
himself and said, ‘Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hands of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.’
This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Second Reading – Matthew 16.13-19
When Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, but others
Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living
God.’ And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and
on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be
bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.’
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
The Address
Hymn
1. Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,
whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy, be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,
your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.
2. Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe,
be there at our labours, and give us, we pray, your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.
3. Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace, be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,
your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.
4. Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm,
be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray, your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.
Words: Joyce Placzek (Jan Struther) (1901-1953) Music: Slane, Irish traditional melody,
harmonised by Erik Routley (1917-1982) © Oxford University Press (Ancient & Modern – 713)

¶ The Liturgy of Baptism
Presentation of the Candidates
The Parents and Godparents stand
Faith is the gift of God to his people.
In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling. People of God, will you welcome those to be baptised
and uphold them in their new life in Christ? With the help of God, we will.
Parents and godparents,
the Church receives Samuel Thomas Armstrong with joy. Today we are trusting God for his growth in faith.
Will you pray for him, draw him by your example into the community of faith and walk with him in the way of Christ?
With the help of God, we will.
In baptism we begin our journey in faith.
Parents and godparents you speak for Samuel Thomas Armstrong today. Will you care for him, and help him to take his place within the life and worship of Christ's Church?
With the help of God, we will.
The congregation stands
Decision
In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light.
To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask:
Do you turn to Christ?
I turn to Christ.
Do you repent of your sins? I repent of my sins.
Do you renounce evil?
I renounce evil.
The Parents and God parents gather around the font, The congregation turn to face them
8
Signing with the Cross
Samuel is anointed and signed with the cross on the forehead.
Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of his cross. Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified.
Fight valiantly as a disciple of Christ against sin, the world and the devil, and remain faithful
to Christ to the end of your life.
May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, restore in you the image of his glory,
and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ. Amen.
Prayer over the Water
Praise God who made heaven and earth, who keeps his promise for ever.
We thank you, almighty God, for the gift of water
to sustain, refresh and cleanse all life. Over water the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation.
Through water you led the children of Israel from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the promised land.
In water your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ,
to lead us from the death of sin to newness of life.
We thank you, Father, for the water of baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death.
By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, in joyful obedience to your Son, we baptise into his fellowship those who come to him in faith.
Now sanctify this water that, by the power of your Holy Spirit,
they may be cleansed from sin and born again. Renewed in your image, may they walk by the light of faith
and continue forever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Lord; to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
9
Profession of Faith
Brothers and sisters, I ask you to profess, together with those to be baptised, the faith of the Church.
Do you believe and trust in God the Father?
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Baptism
Each child is baptised with the words
I baptise you in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit
After all have been baptised:
May God, who has received you by baptism into his Church, pour upon you the riches of his grace,
that within the company of Christ's pilgrim people you may daily be renewed by his anointing Spirit, and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory. Amen.
10
Welcome and Peace
There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism: by one Spirit we are all baptised into one body.
We welcome you into the fellowship of faith;
we are children of the same heavenly Father; we welcome you.
We are all one in Christ Jesus. We belong to him through faith, heirs of the promise of the Spirit of peace.
The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.
You are invited to share a sign of God’s peace with your neighbour
Hymn
During this Hymn a collection will be received.
1. Be still, for the presence of the Lord,
the Holy One, is here; come bow before him now
with reverence and fear: in him no sin is found –
we stand on holy ground. Be still, for the presence of the Lord,
the Holy One is here.
2. Be still, for the glory of the Lord
is shining all around; he burns with holy fire,
with splendour he is crowned: how awesome is the sight –
our radiant King of light! Be still, for the glory of the Lord
is shining all around.
3. Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place:
he comes to cleanse and heal, to minister his grace.
No work too hard for him, in faith receive from him. Be still, for the power of the Lord
is moving in this place.

Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power,
the glory, the splendour, and the majesty; for everything in heaven and on earth is yours.
All things come from you and of your own do we give you. Amen
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come;
thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
Giving of a Lighted Candle
Children from the church community give the newly baptised a lighted candle lit from the Easter candle.
God has delivered us from the dominion of darkness
and has given us a place with the saints in light.
You have received the light of Christ;
walk in this light all the days of your life. Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. Amen
Blessing

Final Hymn
1. Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.
2. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; thy justice like mountains high soaring above
thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.
3. To all life thou givest, to both great and small;
in all life thou livest, the true life of all; we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, and wither and perish; but naught changeth thee.
4. Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
all laud we would render: O help us to see ‘tis only the splendour of light hideth thee.
Words: Walter Chalmers Smith (1824-1908)
Music: St Denio, adapted from a Welsh song set to a hymn in John Roberts Caniadau y Cyssegre 1839 (Ancient & Modern – 676)

Faculty Applications
Oakham PCC have applied for permissions for two projects to be undertaken in the autumn.
A. A development of the memorial garden on the south side of the
church: Following a generous offer from Oakham in Bloom, it is proposed
to replant the south side garden as a memorial space. We are grateful for all
who, up to now, have kept this area looking so beautiful, particularly,
particularly Graham Scothern for his recent work, and we are sure that this
new scheme will only enhance this area of the churchyard.
B. Proposal for the replacement of the boiler: A new boiler is proposed to be
installed in the upstairs parish office. Public notification was displayed on Wednesday. Parishioners have 28
days from then to lodge any objections. More detailed plans are
available for inspection in the parish office or on the website.

Bereavement Support
Group
For the last 3 years we have been
running a Bereavement Support group in the Parish Hall. It has been for
people of all faiths or none, for those recently bereaved or those who are still aching after many years.
However, particularly since Hildred left, it has become clear that we are
not meeting people’s needs, so the meetings on the first Thursday of the
month in the Parish Hall will now stop. We are planning to re-launch
the service in the autumn, in a different format. To help provide
something useful, we have drawn up a short questionnaire to ask those who
are bereaved what would help. If you have lost a loved one – recently
or further back, please fill in one of the Questionnaires which will be at
the back of Oakham Church, or from the website. Sian Cheverton.
