When Manny Perez rides his bike and breathes in the fresh morn-ing air, he feels free, and does not think about anything -- not even the bone cancer he has battled with fierce determination and over-come, time and time again, since childhood.“Pedaling for 25 miles almost ev-ery day makes me feel better; it re-laxes me,” says Manny, who is 23.His mother, Sandy Perez, says the bicycle is the best way to measure how her son feels. “When he is not on the bike it is because he is very tired, and not feeling well. When he does ride it, I’m pleased.”Manny’s 13-Year BattleThe young man has fought bone cancer for 13 years -- he was 10-years-od when it was first detected. He recovered, but it returned twice thereafter. The ter-rible sarcoma showed up again just last December.“I get severe pain in the back. I lose a lot of strength. The legs get paralyzed and go numb,” says Manny. He has undergone seven surger-ies in which doctors tried to re-move as much as they could of the malignant tumor covering his spine, but after a few years of well-

being, it returns.“It is devastating,” says his mother. “Manny has gone through a lot. He does everything right, takes his medicine, gets exercise.” Sandy is also a registered nurse, who has been Manny’s primary caregiver while his family has built a team to help and care for their only son.His father, David, a manufactur-ing engineer, his younger sister Selise, and his girlfriend Michelle have been at his side throughout.“We’re Mexicans, and when Man-ny has had surgery, the waiting room has been filled with 20, 25 family members,” says Sandy.Manny confesses that it is pre-cisely the family support system that has given him the strength to continue. “I’m not happy to have cancer, but I accept it, and I have a very strong family and friends who are with me.”“It’s tough,” stresses his father, Da-vid. “One cannot give up. Although doctors have told us that there is no cure, there is always the chance of a miracle. So the fam-ily doesn’t give up. Manny doesn’t give up. He sees his cancer only as a setback in his life.”A Positive Attitude and Palliative Care

Michelle, Manny ‘s girlfriend of three years, describes him as strong and very determined. He does not look frail. On the contrary, he looks vigorous, a healthy young man with a very positive attitude.Besides his family support, Manny is bearing the burden of stress caused by his cancer with help from the palliative care being pro-vided by Kaiser Permanente.Like most people, especially in the Latino community, Manny does not fully understand the difference between the confusing term, “pal-liative care,” and hospice -- he believes palliative care is to “keep you comfortable until you die.”

But that describes hospice ser-vices, which come during the last stages of life. Palliative care be-gins much earlier, and can help seriously ill patients live better with both comfort care and medical treatment as needed.Manny’s mother says he knows that there is no cure for his dis-ease, and his doctors are doing everything to keep him comfort-able. “We will continue to deal with the disease,” she states.Through providing palliative care, Kaiser has been trying to provide Manny with a good quality of life while living with a debilitating

A federal grand jury in Miami did not file charges against Sen. Rob-ert Menendez in connection to accusations that the lawmaker im-properly traveled to the Dominican Republic on a private plane owned by a physician friend and cavorted with underage prostitutes.According to the Miami Herald, the grand jury decided not to file charges after reviewing docu-ments and hearing from witnesses on the matter. The newspaper added, however, that the grand jury continues to look into allegations that Menen-dez, a New Jersey Democrat who

chairs the Senate Foreign Rela-tions Committee, used his influ-ence to help the physician, Dr. Sa-lomon Melgen, in a billing dispute with Medicare. The grand jury also is continuing to examine whether Menendez helped Melgen, a key campaign donor, land a port-security contract in the Dominican Republic. The Herald based its story on “several sources familiar with the probe.”While the grand jury’s decision not to file charges is a boost to Menen-dez, who had called the allega-tions baseless and part of a smear

campaign by political ri-vals, the Herald did note that Melgen remains on thin ice.Two months ago, the newspaper said, the FBI and the U.S. De-partment of Health and Human Services went to Melgen’s West Palm Beach clinic again to gather evidence re-garding what the Herald termed the eye doctor’s “prolific Medicare billing.”Menendez had said that the alle-gations against him were aimed at

dooming his re-election last year. His office declined to comment on the grand jury decision not to file charges, according to the Herald.

By P.A. Edmead Jr.

On Sunday morning October 20th while driving and listen-ing to KJLH Gospel music, our newspaper photojournalist heard two dogs that sounded like they were barking vio-lently. As he drove toward the dogs he saw a man on the ground asking for help, who asked for help because is dog was being attacked by a loose pit bull. Mr. James Woods was on the ground trying to pull his pet named Cynamin from jaws of the attacking pit bull. P.A. Edmead gave James a small tire iron to try and pry open the jaws to no avail. Then P.A. at the request James used his car with the leach in tow to pull them apart to no avail. When another dog and owner came by did the pit bull let go its death grip and attack an-other dog which was beat off by a tree branch which broke, that was handed over by a neighbor. Ed-mead took the victim who was bitten on the hand and wrist and fingers with his dog to his home. Inglewood Police responded with three units in less than minute to the scene at 81st between Van Ness and 2nd avenue.

All nerves and blood vessels were missed by the dog bite. The City of Inglewood gave P.A. Edmead Jr. a Special Commendation in Recognition for his Act of Heroism signed by Mayor James T. Butts Jr. and the whole city council. When walking your pets and jogging always carry a stick for protection.

The 5th Annual SANTA Monica Pub Crawl returns for the city’s most festive night of the year on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013. More than 30 local bars and restaurants all over the city will come together to raise money for those in need through a partnership with the Westside Food Bank. Last year, more than 5,000 crawlers celebrated the season at the city’s most cherished holiday event by filling the streets as joyous Santas, reindeer and elves, and raised enough money for 120,000 meals.Participating bars on Wilshire, Main Street, The Pier and the Third Street Promenade, will offer crawlers food and drink specials as

part of the SANTA Monica Pub Crawl festivities. Tick-ets are $10 for the official pub crawl wristband and are available at www.santamon-icapubcrawl.com. “We always look forward to the return of the SANTA Monica Pub Crawl,” said Laurel Rosen, President and CEO of the Santa Mon-ica Chamber of Commerce. “This event has quickly be-come one of the busiest nights of the year for our local businesses and pro-ceeds benefit a great cause for families during the holi-days.”“Westside Food Bank is thrilled to be the benefi-ciary agency for the SANTA Monica Pub Crawl,” says Genevieve Riutort, Chief Development Officer for the Westside Food Bank. “The

event has helped to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in our commu-nity while also giving people the opportunity to make a difference while having a great time. Over the past four years, the Santa Mon-ica Pub Crawl has made it possible for Westside Food Bank to distribute about a quarter million more pounds of food for local families in need. That makes a huge impact, especially during the holidays.”SANTA Monica Pub Crawl participants are encouraged to dress in Santa/holiday at-tire so the streets of Santa Monica are filled with merry cheer. An Instagram contest will award the crawler(s) with the most impressive holiday gear with a special prize, so festive dress is

highly recommended. In order to participate, crawl-ers must purchase a wrist-band, which allows them access to food and drink specials at each location. There will also be a 5-year anniversary Official After Party with music, dancing, a photo booth, contests and more fun festivities, and the location will be announced the night of the crawl. The pub crawl includes special offerings from businesses like Joe’s Pizza and the Bor-der Grill Food Truck. Some food and drink specials include $4 beers at Areal, two for $5 Steak Tacos at Rusty’s Surf Ranch, half off appetizers and $3 Holi-day Shooters at Hooters of Santa Monica, $5 Whiskey Shots at O’Brien’s Pub on

Britticares Interanational’s 7Th Annual Give Life For Christmas Blood & Toy Drive

Theodore Myles’ Christmas Angel Network Delivers Door-to-Door Trees, Fundraising Opportunity and Charity for the Holiday Season

Immigration Directive ‘Paroles’ Undocumented Family Members of U.S. Military & Veterans

Christmastime brings the warm waft of evergreens in the air. But for anyone who has ever stacked a six-foot Fraser Fir on the roof of a car, sometimes the transporting of that wondrous pine scent can be more than challenging. With the es-tablishment of the Christmas Angel Network (CAN), entrepreneur The-odore Myles has not only effectively tackled the transportation issue, but he has also created a method to provide holiday fundraising for charities and organizations in the process. The Christmas Angel Network of-fers cost effective delivery of holi-day trees door-to-door anywhere in the country. In addition, organiza-tions, churches and charities can make use of the Christmas Angel Network Fundraiser Program by utilizing their own special Christmas Angel Network discount code on all their sales referrals and receive a percentage of the proceeds on ev-ery order.“The holiday season is big business reaching up to 1.5 billion dollars with just fresh tree sales alone,” cites Ted. “My intention was to tap into that market and offer an effec-tive fundraiser for charities, while at the same time providing a valu-able service to the consumer. The Christmas Angel Network is able to deliver the most cost efficient and

affordable door-to-door delivery service available while offer-ing organizations and charities the opportu-nity to also tap into and benefit financially from the market as well!” The Christmas Angel Network Fundraiser Program is designed to boost charitable or-ganizations nationwide with an annual, contin-ual stream of revenue derived from sales from the site. A free discount code is provided to each agency which stores their ac-cumulate sales activity. At the end of the season, the number of times the code was used will determine the amount to be paid to the orga-nization.The Christmas Angel Network’s added benefit is that unlike most trees that are cut down in October and sit until sold, their trees are cut to order and arrive within a few days of being harvested. Therefore they have a stronger, fresher scent and last longer throughout the holi-day season. The online network also offers wreaths, garlands, tree stands and decorative accessories. The vast selection of holiday décor is perfect for seasonal fundraiser opportunities.

Ted’s love affair with trees began as a youth while working on Christmas lots during the holiday season. He learned to distinguish between the varied saplings including the Noble Fir, Fraser Fir, White Pine, Balsam, and of course the Evergreen, all of which are sold via the Christmas Angel Network. The experience taught him that the right tree was just as important as the right price and led him to create the Christmas Angel Network. Placing an online order with the Christmas Angel Network is easy and fun. Selections include trees of all sizes and varied origins. Orga-nizations can also sign up for their own fundraising discount code. A vast grove of delectable firs await at http://www.christmasangelnetwork.net/

The technical term is “paroled in place” – and it harbors a significant change in immi-gration policy that is affecting many families with members in the U.S. armed forces. The new guidelines, which went into effect Nov. 15, allow the undocumented spouses, children and parents of mili-tary personnel to seek a resi-dent visa –or be “paroled”— without having to leave the country. The U.S. Citizenship and Im-migration Services (USCIS) has long had the power to stop deportations for relatives of military members and vet-erans, but those relatives still faced a Catch-22: Undocu-mented immigrants generally had to leave the U.S. in order to collect legal visas they had applied for through marriage to an American citizen or through some other family tie. But once outside the country, they could be barred from returning for up to a decade.Former Department of Home-

land Security Janet Napolitano began the policy informally in 2010, but it was not being fol-lowed consistently in immigra-tion field offices across the country. There was no clear policy, for instance, about who exactly in the family could be covered. Until a couple of weeks ago, the application of that policy had been case-by-case, with very little written guidance about how it should be applied or even to whom. On Nov. 15, USCIS fi-nally distributed a nine-page memorandum detailing the spe-cifics of the policy.Immediate family of veterans

now should be granted parole in place absent any “adverse” fac-tors such as a criminal record, Helen Parsonage, a lawyer who specializes in immigration is-sues and a partner at the law firm of Elliot Morgan Parsonage in Winston-Salem, N.C., told the Winston Salem Journal. One of her clients is Alejandra King, a Mexican-born bilingual legal assistant at Parsonage’s firm, who is married to and has a child with Iraq War Marine Corps veteran, Charles King. Despite having been married for three years, it was only on the following business day, Monday Nov. 18,

Brittiana Henderson, a sweet an-gel in heaven, continues to give this holiday season as the founda-tion she started while battling can-cer encourages all to give the gift of life. Join BrittiCares International, a 501 (C) (3) nonprofit as they host their 7th Annual Give Life for Christmas Blood Drive, December 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Children’s Hos-pital Los Angeles. Co-hosted by actor Nadji Jeter from the hit film Grown Ups, the blood drive will include live performances, celeb-rity appearances, face painting, raffle giveaways, free food for do-nors and an appearance by Santa Claus. “It’s so uplifting and heartwarm-ing to see people donate blood because following my daughter Brittiana’s leukemia diagnosis, she would often need two or three blood and/or platelet transfusions per week, just to have energy and

function as a normal kid” said Britti-Cares Founder Shirell Henderson. According to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, the holiday seasons are their slowest time for blood donations. Each year, BrittiCares seeks to change that by encourag-ing various communities to donate blood. The American Red Cross reports one pint of blood can save up to three lives.

Californians who purchase Scratchers® this holiday season have a golden opportunity to add a little more jingle to their gift by sealing a special decorative en-velope with a creative video! Cus-tomers who purchase any Scratch-ers game at participating retailers will receive a free Golden Greeting gift envelope. They can then scan the QR code on the envelope with a mobile device and upload a short (12-second maximum) personal video, or select a generic greeting to send to friends and family.Recipients simply scan the QR code, or go directly to the Golden Greeting website (http://golden-greeting.calottery.com/) and en-ter a retrieval code that the giver writes on the Golden Envelope. The four character retrieval code is provided to the giver after their video is approved. The Lottery wants to assure all personal videos are “family friend-ly,” so they will be reviewed first for appropriate content, and then uploaded if given the okay. The

process can take up to 24 hours before the video is “live” and avail-able for viewing. (You can read the terms of service, which are listed on the Golden Greeting website).Anyone can participate in the cre-ation of a Golden Greeting video, however you must be 18 years or older to purchase Scratchers or any other California Lottery Prod-uct. For more information on how to give a “Golden Greeting,” plus to watch an example of a personal greeting video, check here. This month, the Lottery is offering a family of $1, $2, $3 and $5 holiday Scratchers to fit all budgets. Not only are the $1 Sweet Holidays Scratchers perfect gifts to stuff into those Golden Greeting envelopes – they can even be used as gift tags. (see photo below). Also, the Lottery’s latest holiday commercial is now airing in major television markets throughout Cali-fornia. You can check out the 60 second spot here and feel the joy of the season. The “When You Give, You Win”

holiday promotion is part of the Lottery’s continued effort to give out more prizes, create more win-ners and earn more money for California public schools. This past fiscal year, the sale of Lottery products generated $1.28 billion for students – the 13th consecu-tive year more than a billion dollars was distributed to public schools throughout the state. Although a modest amount once divided be-tween 1,600 public school districts, teachers and administrators count on their funds to continue criti-cal learning programs, purchase equipment and even pay teacher salaries.

illness. He has chosen intensive medical interventions, at times, be-cause they have allowed him to get back on his bike, go to school, and spend time with his family, with the understanding that the intervention is not a cure. His Dream—Becoming a DoctorThe excruciating cancer has not stopped Manny’s dreams of becom-ing a doctor. And he believes fer-vently that as long as he lives, there is hope for a cure. “I still have faith; I continue to pray. I do not stop. Giv-ing up is not an option, because if I do, the cancer will take my body,” he says with conviction.Romina Rosen, a geriatric physician and palliative-care specialist at Kai-ser Permanente Medical Center in Panorama City, said what Manny’s family has been doing for him, bat-tling for his life and not giving up, is normal when the life of a young per-son is at stake.“Palliative care can help him in his fight to deal with his symptoms and pain. And no one can guess what can happen,” Rosen said.Very few Latinos who are facing chronic or terminal diseases, as Manny is, know what palliative care is or how it can help them when they are diagnosed with an incurable dis-ease, whether they are young or old. Most have not even heard of it.A poll commissioned by the Califor-nia Health Care Foundation (CHCF) in 2011 showed that only 23 percent of Latinos have heard of hospice, which is non-medical comfort care for the terminally ill, usually provided at home until hospitalization is nec-essary.

that King applied for a parole. The Arizona Republic recently reported on Phoenix’s José Zermeño, 53, an immigrant from Mexico who has lived in the U.S. for 30 years, and his son Gabriel, 21, an Arizona National Guardsman. “At any moment, I could be overseas fighting for my country and he could be getting deported by the same country I was supposed to be fighting for,” Gabriel told the Re-public.Polls show that a majority of Ameri-cans support providing a path toward citizenship for immigrants living in the U.S. unlawfully. A Quinnipiac Univer-sity poll conducted Nov. 6 to 11 of 2,545 registered voters across the country found that 57 percent sup-port allowing “illegal immigrants” to stay and eventually apply for citizen-ship. Despite that, efforts at passing immigration reform laws have met with stout opposition in the House, so the Obama administration’s policy shift on parole in place can be seen as a small, administrative step that can be put into effect without Con-gressional approval.

It incorporated case studies of seven young Latinas from varying circumstances who found educa-tional success through high school, community college and four-year universities.By doing so, UCLA found that a strong belief by parents that their daughters will complete high school was also associated with increased high school graduations and college attendance rates among Latinas. Additionally, being bilingual and hav-ing good math scores in elementary school were positive indicators for success.
