    Facilities and resources

    The School of Health in Social Science islocated in the newly refurbished northwestwing of the 19th-century McEwan Hallbuilding, designed by Sir Robert RowandAnderson, which forms part of themagnicent Old Medical Schoolquadrangle, in the Universitys Central

    Area campus, with easy access to thewhole city (see Campus map, page 24).

    The School is fully accessible, featuringwell-equipped teaching rooms, as well asa large and bright study room, specicallydesigned for postgraduate researchstudents and their requirements.Individual workspaces are equipped witha computer, or connection for your ownlaptop, and all terminals are loaded witha variety of software tools for researchpurposes. Every postgraduate researchstudent has access to lockable storage

    space and modern kitchen facilities. Thestudy area is available 24 hours a day.Social space for more relaxed discussion,or just a chance to unwind and catch upwith the latest news, is available for allpostgraduate students and staff. Wi- isavailable in many areas of the School.

    The Universitys Main Library, only a fewminutes walk from the School, holdsone of the worlds most comprehensiveranges of books and journals, relevantto all our disciplines.

    You will also have access to a substantialrange of e-journals, through theUniversitys subscriptions, fromwherever you wish to work. You canread, download and print these, eitherfrom a University-networked computeror from home. Books acquired by theUniversity in the past 25 years arecatalogued online and this cataloguecan be accessed via the various terminalsthroughout the University.

    Your postgraduate experience will take place at the heartof our historic campus, with easy access to all University

    facilities, including the Main Library on George Square,where youll nd more than two million printed volumesand generous electronic resources.

    Postgraduate students of the School ofHealth in Social Science can also accessthe extensive resources of the NationalLibrary of Scotland, a copyright library,entitled to receive a copy of every bookpublished in the UK and Ireland. Againit is located only a few minutes walk

    from the School.

    Within the University, there are morethan 1,400 open access computers, withcomputing suites including several with24-hour access located throughout thecampus. On joining us you will receive aUniversity email account and unlimitedaccess to computing facilities. Anyrefresher or introductory trainingneeds can be met by the UniversitysInformation Services support.

    Collections of the University

    The Universitys collections are uniquein their depth and diversity. Managed bythe Centre for Research Collections, andhoused in our Main Library at the heartof our central campus, they span morethan 500,000 rare books, scientic andcultural artefacts from around the world,historically signicant musical instrumentcollections, specialist museum collections,and manuscripts.

Nursing Studies is along-established and world-leading centreof excellence for nursing, healthcare andhealth-related policy and practice. TheCounselling and Psychotherapy section isat the forefront of the development ofcounselling as a professional activity, andhas a substantive programme of socialscientic research of international standing.Interdisciplinary Social Science in Healthis a newly formed group of teachers andresearchers, drawing together social

    Applied Psychology forChildren and Young PeopleMSc 1 yr FT

    Programme descriptionThis programme combines academic teaching with clinical practicetraining in the area of applied psychology for children and young people.It offers an opportunity to develop knowledge and competence in thedelivery of evidence-based psychological interventions, for this specicgroup. The programme was developed in close partnership with the NHS.For the duration of the programme you will be employed in a one-yearclinical placement in the Scottish NHS Child & Adolescent Mental HealthService, gaining valuable experience in applying psychological theory topractice, with the support of a qualied clinical psychologist. In addition tothe essential elements for applied psychologists in health, and child andadolescent mental health professionals (e.g. recognition of child abuse),there is a particular focus on the early years and early intervention,across a variety of settings. The clinical experience gained on placementfacilitates linking theory to practice and fosters the development of

    professional skills necessary for post-qualication practice.Programme structureYour learning will be delivered through lectures, seminars and clinical practiceworkshops, based at both the University of Edinburgh and NHS partnershipsites in Glasgow. You will also undertake a one-year supervised placement.

    Clinical Psychology

    DClinPsychol 3 yrs FT (45 yrs specialised route)

    Programme descriptionFirst taught in 1959, this advanced practitioner programme is one of thelongest established of its kind in the UK. The s tandard qualication for acareer in clinical psychology, a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology will entitleyou to apply for registration with the Health Professions Council andchartered status with the British Psychological Society. Youll be trained toan advanced level in the use of psychological interventions across a varietyof settings, and gain competencies in the application of a range of therapies,including cognitive behavioural therapy and interpersonal therapy, andother approaches. In addition to compulsory competencies in psychologicaltherapies and clinical case management, you will also achieve advancedcompetencies in consultation and supervision, service development andgovernance and applied psychology research and evaluation. The

    programme is constantly updated to ensure it reects current practice, andyoull be taught by lecturers who, as practitioners, are able to convey themost up-to-date methods and theories. Thanks to our partnership withNHS Education for Scotland and a number of Scottish NHS boards, youllbe employed throughout your training as a trainee clinical psychologist.Half of your training will be clinical practice-based and you will completea number of clinical practice placements, usually within your employingNHS Health Board area, covering different specialties and service areas.

    Programme structureYour learning will be spread across six blocks, spaced throughout youryears of training, and interspersed with supervised NHS placementsin linked areas. Placements cover a wide range of work in psychiatric,general, learning disability and rehabilitation hospitals, both in primarycare settings and in the community. Courses include:

    YEAR 1Clinical Psychology I;Adult Mental Health; Learning Disabilities.

    YEAR 2

    Clinical Psychology II; Children, Adolescents and Families;Neuropsychology and Older Adults.

    YEAR 3

    Advanced Practice(covering health psychology, substance abuse, forensicissues, specialised therapies, adult mental health and other specialist topics).

    While all students complete the clinical psychology courses, theremaining structure of the programme is dependent on your careerinterests, as reected in your individual training development plan.

    Career opportunitiesOnce registered with the Health Professions Council and the BritishPsychological Society, you will be eligible to apply for employmentas a clinical psychologist in the NHS or with other organisations,and commence a rewarding career in this stimulating eld.

    Minimum entry requirementsA UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent (www.ed.ac.uk/international/country), in psychology, along with BPS Graduate Basisfor Chartered Membership. You will also need to demonstrate relevantclinical or other work experience.     Cognitive Behaviour Therapyfor Children and Young PeoplePG Cert 12 yrs PT (UK/EU students only)

    Programme descriptionAs a mental health practitioner, an understanding of cognitive behaviourtherapy (CBT) and its application in the care of children and young peopleis a valuable career asset. This part-time programme will enable you todevelop a comprehensive understanding of the scientic principlesinvolved, and apply them in a clinical setting. By providing you with afull, critical and integrated understanding of the developmental andpsychological theories that underlie effective CBT interventions, theprogramme aims to equip you with the ability to conduct functionalanalysis of childhood problems, and apply the most commonly usedtechniques associated with CBT, including normalisation, psycho-education, Socratic questioning, contingency management and more.

    Programme structure

    The programme consists of two courses, which combine taught andpractical elements:

    COURSES

    Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Children and Young People Theory

    and Practice; Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Supervised Practice.

    Career opportunitiesCBT is recognised by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), theScottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) and the PsychologicalTherapies Matrix (Scottish Government, 2011) as a recommended,evidence-based therapy for a range of disorders in childhood andadolescence. Consequently, clinicians qualied in CBT practice have avaluable skill set for current and future posts in the NHS and related areas.

    Minimum entry requirementsA UK honours degree (reaching SCQF level 9) or its internationalequivalent (www.ed.ac.uk/international/country), and substantialcurrent, or recent, work experience with children and young people inmental health settings. It is expected that you will hold a professionalqualication relating to the emotional wellbeing of children and youngpeople (e.g. mental health nursing, teaching or social work). You mustalso have access to clinical cases and clinical supervision for the plannedduration of study, to enable you to undertake therapeutic work with achild or young person in an appropriate setting. Your suitability will beestablished through your personal application and references and youmay be asked to attend an interview. Clearance through DisclosureScotlands Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme will be required.

    Psychological Interventions

    for Children and YoungPeople

    PgCert 12 yrs PT (UK/EU students only)

    Programme descriptionDesigned for professionals working in health and social care roles, eitherin the NHS, education, social work or the voluntary sector, this newprogramme offers you the chance to enhance your theoretical and clinicalskills in the area of psychological practice for children, adolescents andfamilies. You will study the compulsory aspects of evidence-based,

    psychological interventions, with an overview of the most up-to-datetheory, evidence and application, and undertake foundation trainingin two, of a choice of four, therapeutic approaches. While your focuswill be on the practical applications of psychological approaches, youllalso explore the philosophical and theoretical elements of therapeuticpractice and the evidence base that informs clinical decision-making.

    Programme structureYou will complete one compulsory course Psychological Interventionsfor Children and Young People and you will also complete your choiceof two optional courses, which may include:

    Programme descriptionThis innovative, new masters degree provides you with not only coretheoretical courses in research but also a placement-based experienceof research in practice, within both a multi-professional researchenvironment and a specic, nursing, research setting.     The research practice attachments are central to this programme.     The PhD and MSc by Research in Clinical Psychology offer the chanceto work with, and be supervised by, a range of clinical academics acrossmany areas of psychology, who have international reputations andoutstanding publications in their areas of expertise. We are a highlyresearch-active group, with all members of staff pursuing either originalresearch interests or supervising postgraduate research projects. Currentprojects relate to: quality of life and its measurement in a variety ofpopulations; healthy ageing; models of cognition and emotion; onset andrecovery from severe and enduring psychological disorder; attachmentand emotion regulation in severe and enduring psychological disorders;adaptation of psychological interventions; neuropsychology andoffending behaviour; and long-term outcome of brain injury.

    A PhD in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences in Health offers a focus oninnovative and cross-disciplinary health and social care research. Our staffembrace a range of academic disciplines, including sociology, geography,social anthropology, social policy and healthcare studies.
