This month’s article is an update on the various events takingplace in Palmers Green over the coming weeks.

Love Your DoorStep

At the core of every community are theelements of soul, love, faith and hope. The‘soul and love’ is the heartbeat of thepeople who have ‘faith and hope’ for thefuture for the community. Holding allthese elements together is what I believeare the random acts of kindness or whatis known as ‘pay it forward’. The idea ofpay it forward comes from the novel, andsubsequent film, Pay it Forward, which isthe story of a young boy who does threegood deeds for others in need. All the boyasks in return is that they pass on the gooddeed to three other people and keep thecycle going.

I think we all pay it forward automaticallyin our own ways and I see it so much of it,on the Love Your DoorStep platform. Italways sends a shiver down by spine of allthe kindness that there is out there andthe stories are numerous - from strangersfinding lost Oyster cards and then workinghard to reunite it with its owner; or

someone dropping off a food parcel forsomeone, or the simple things of a fewwords of encouragement to someone whois feeling low on the platform. All theseactions make a difference to a communityand it is neighbourly love.

Talking of positive actions, Crown RecordManagement one of the areas largestglobal companies organised the U.K.'s firstfree shredding day in April whereresidents and businesses from theborough were invited to spring cleanpaperwork. A 7.5 tonne mobile shreddingtruck allowed local businesses andmembers of the public to dispose ofsensitive paperwork on the spot and itincluded credit card and banks statements, contracts, and accountancy documents.Plus, people also benefited from CrownRecords Management expert advice onhow to make sure important informationremains protected; important in this dayand age. Thank you Crown!

So, if you are looking to do somethinggood and pass on some love, why don’tyou pop into the Dugdale Centre inEnfield Town to have a look at the free artexhibition, which is also the coolestexhibition on in London at the moment bylocal artist AJ Tracy. Go on spread theword. You just don’t know what littlerandom act of kindness might just beheading your way…

PLEASE NOTE:*If anyone is interested in having a pitch for a stall please contact us: Costas Georgiou 07943 198 198 or Mark Leaver 07779 624 147Spaces are limited; there is a £25 fee, and space restriction of 3m x 3m. The GLBA will NOT be able to provide gazebos, tables and

chairs unfortunately, however we would advise any pitch holders make the necessary arrangements to bring their own so thatwhatever the weather everyone is able to be there for the whole day and enjoy the day.

UNFORTUNATELY THERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS ISSUED ONCE PITCH SPACE IS BOOKED AND PAID FOR.

The familiar hanging flower baskets are scheduledto be placed along the high street some time in Juneand we look forward to their arrival. Summer reallyis on its way!

The latest on the Landmark clock at The Triangle isthat as of the time of this article going to print, thefoundations have been prepared and we lookforward to the imminent arrival of the long-awaitedLandmark Clock. We will update everyone withfurther developments and plans for its official launchas soon as we know more.

The month of June always sees the GLBA workingfull steam ahead with the Annual Palmers GreenShopping Carnival. This year’s event will be takingplace on Saturday 5th July 2014. This year we arecoinciding the Shopping Carnival with the St John’sChurch Annual Summer Fete and both parties are

hoping for a great community day and lots of sunnyweather.

This year’s Palmers Green Shopping Carnival will seesome changes to the usual programme of events:we will have TWO music stages – one along GreenLanes and the second along Aldermans Hill withentertainment at both points throughout the day.The Triangle will be a hub of stalls with peopleselling their wares*. Hazelwood Lane will remain setup in its more traditional way as in past ShoppingFestivals and will be home to a bouncy castle, carousel, face painting and other attractions still tobe confirmed.

We would like to encourage all shopkeepers andbusiness owners to make the most of this day – ifyou are a café, restaurant or bakery outlet etc; whynot set up tables or stalls outside your premises?

Perhaps think of special offers exclusive for the dayto offer passing trade? Offer some food and drinktasters. All other types of businesses should partakein this too – use this opportunity to promoteyourselves, hand out flyers, any promotional itemsyou have with your logos on them and so on.

The GLBA works hard for the community, butprimarily for the local businesses. This event is agreat opportunity to let any local residents andshoppers meet the faces of their local shopkeepers.Let’s work together to create a friendly and familiarshopping environment for everyone.

Naturally we will be running the treasure hunt forthe kids as we do every year – put the date in yourdiaries SATURDAY 5TH JULY 2014, and keep aneye out for our posters and flyers for moreinformation.

Knife possession: Second strike and you're – in Jail!

Parliamentary Comment

Imagine an invisible killer that you cannot see orfeel but is present all around you and slowly oneday at a time, little by little debilitates you untilyour inevitable demise. Is this the story line fromlatest Stephen King novel you may ask? The plot ofa new sci-fi horror film? Something from theTwilight Zone perhaps? Sadly it is none of thesebut it is something that is with us right here, rightnow and is wreaking havoc across the world – thisinvisible killer is none other than air pollution.

In May 2014 the World Health Organisation namedLondon as one of nine urban areas in the UKbreaching internationally recognised safe levels ofair quality. The pollutants in the air include sulphurdioxide, carbon dioxide nitrogen dioxide andparticulates known as PM10 mostly coming fromburning fuels to generate heat and electricity andfrom motor vehicle emissions. Public HealthEngland estimate that in one year there were

3,389 deaths in London linked to poor qualitylevels of air. Air pollution is known to increase andexacerbate asthma, cause respiratory illnesses andaffect the lungs and the people most vulnerable tothe effects of air pollution are children and theelderly.

What does this have to do with Enfield you mayask? The road with the most air pollution comingfrom it in London is the North Circular Road andwhen it is considered dangerous for primary schoolchildren to play in a playground because of theemissions they breathe then it is a problem for allof us. Enfield Council has for some time beenmonitoring the air quality at four fixed monitoringstations strategically located across the boroughto get the best measure of air quality over timewhich can then inform what steps need to be takento stop the pollution. Enfield is a big boroughhowever and the four static monitoring stations

have been limited in what they can measure butthat’s about to change.

Earlier this year Enfield Council in partnership withcomputer company Intel launched a researchproject which as a result of improvements intechnology allows for 100 specialist pollutionmonitors to be fitted across the borough some onmoving objects such as refuse collection vehicles inorder to get a much clearer picture as to the wherethese pollutants can be found across Enfield. Thisdata will be shared with Intel, University CollegeLondon and Imperial College which when analysedwill enable Enfield Council to take action to reduceair pollution in the borough; after all it shouldnever be an acceptable state of affairs that playingin school playground is harmful to childrenbecause the air that they are breathing in is sopolluted. This is a challenge that we must take onand win.

Unfortunately, in London, and in Enfield in particular, stabbings and knife attacks are no longer headlinenews due to their prevalence. Some of you mayremember only a few months ago the brutal stabbingof Joshua Folkes, yet another young person cut downin his youth. As his alleged killers are currently facingthe courts, the shocking attack in Bowes Roadreminds us all not to have any complacency in thedrive to remove knives from our streets. Enfield hasmade good progress in reducing knife crime andserious youth violence is down by 19%, but one knifeattack is one too many.

For this reason I am continuing the fight against knifecrime in the Borough, alongside my colleague andEnfield North MP, Nick de Bois.We both initiated backin 2011 successful new clauses to the Legal AidSentencing and Punishment Bill to toughen up knifecrime sentences following a spate of knife attacks inEnfield. These clauses extended mandatory sentencesfor knife crime to under 18 year olds, sending a clearmessage to young people of the seriousness ofcarrying knives. Our amendment meant that if youthreaten someone with a knife you should expect to

go to prison and, if you are 16 or over, you must go toprison unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Whilst this was a welcome step in tackling those whothreaten with a knife it did not go as far as ourmanifesto commitment to impose a custodialsentence for possessing a knife in a public place. AfterJoshua's death last year I called on the Prime Ministerto ensure we are 'intolerant' towards knives. Now,with Nick de Bois MP, I have tabled a new clause tothe Criminal Justice and Courts Bill for Report Stageto introduce a mandatory 6 month custodial sentencefor adults for a 2nd conviction of possession of aknife. In addition we are also tabling a second clausefor a 4 month Detention and Training Order for a 16-18 year olds again following conviction for a 2ndoffence.

What this will mean is that those who repeat a knifecrime offence for the second time, will go to prison. The Home Secretary, in her recent visit to Enfield, declared her support for our amendments which isgathering support from many MPs.

We must make clear that carrying a knife on our

streets of Enfield and beyond, is a serious crime – andthose who ignore this will end up in jail. As a CriminalDefence Solicitor I saw all too often in our local courtsoffenders avoid a prison sentence and the lateststatistics reveal that about 1 in 4 will do so. In factthere is a particularly poor record in London of repeatoffending which our amendment seeks to tackle.Having been involved in youth work and criminal lawfor many years I recognise that by the time the courtshave to get involved it is too late. Early interventionis key to provide appropriate boundaries and positiverole models to raise the aspirations of young peoplebeyond the need for a knife to the need for training,a qualification and a job.

Yvonne Lawson is one such role model in Enfieldwhose son Godwin was killed by a knife attack. Hercampaigning recognises the need for prevention butalso for tough sentencing given the damage causedby knives. We need to listen to the voices of victimsand their families and root out knives from ourcommunity. In one of the first debates of the newsession of Parliament MPs can show they are listeningby voting for our knife crime amendment.

Past Times, St Monicaʼs Church

Following the construction of the railwayline from Wood Green to Enfield in 1871,the hamlet of Palmers Green began toincrease in size as new houses were builtand people moved into the area. Soon, there was a need for a church for thenumber of Roman Catholics in the area,so Fr Thomas Heditch, with the approvalof Cardinal Bourne, opened a Catholicmission in Palmers Green and the firstSunday Mass was celebrated on 10th July1910. The small congregation of around60 people gathered initially in a privatehouse on Grovelands Road, but theneighbours weren't welcoming, eventhough Fr Heditch said they wouldabandon the singing of hymns! By 20thAugust , The Tablet Catholic newspaperprinted the following tongue-in-cheekreport: “The troubles of Palmers Greengrow. Not only are they without achurch, but they are without even afoothold of any sort, the Catholics ofPalmers Green. A house was hired, Masswas said, jaundiced neighbourscomplained, and lessors discovered that acovenant of the lease barred use of thehouse for religious worship, and now thedifficulty arises how to find even a house,

not to say the site of a church. So FatherHeditch is in trouble, crying in thewilderness of Palmers Green.”Parishioner Cecil Hughes recalled for ourgolden jubilee, “Thus it was that early in1911 we found ourselves in a largerhouse standing in its own grounds inGreen Lanes opposite St John's Church, named Hazelwood House, a stone'sthrow from our present church. We werethe last tenants - shops are there now.”

Following Fr Heditch’s retirement due toill health, a new priest, Fr PatrickGallagher, was appointed to PalmersGreen in June 1912. Cecil Hughesdescribed him as a ‘giant of purposefuldrive and energy … he never rested, never tired. He did everything.’ Within ayear, Fr Gallagher had bought the landfor the new church from an initiallyreluctant vendor, Barratts, the sweetmakers of Wood Green; erected atemporary ‘tin hut’ church and set aboutfund raising. Donations were made byparishioners and benefactors and a‘Dutch Kermese’ (bazaar) took place inthe spring of 1913, held in neighbouringSt John’s Hall. The foundation stone waslaid on 20th June 1913 by CardinalBourne, although its location is nowunknown! The church was designed byarchitect Edward Goldie of Goldie &Child, in the ‘Perpendicular Gothic’ styleand built of Bath Stone by local firm JBysouth Ltd of Tottenham.

St Monica’s church was officially openedon 4th May 1914 - the original feast dayof St Monica. Cardinal Bourne presidedat the Solemn Opening Mass and wasenthusiastically welcomed by a gatheringof nearly 600, including 40 clergy andbuilder John Bysouth and his wife Alice. The Bowes Park Weekly News declaredthat ‘The new church is a decidedornament to the district. It is solidly andsimply built of stone and the squaretower is a majestic feature.’

Exactly one hundred years later, almost athousand parishioners gathered onSunday 4th May 2014 to celebrate thecentenary of St Monica’s church. CardinalVincent Nichols from WestminsterCathedral said the Mass, alongside parish

priest Canon Shaun Lennard andAssistant Priest Fr Andrew Gallagher (norelation!). Special guests included MrJohn Bysouth, the grandson of thebuilder of the church. Canon Shaun saidon the day “We are building on the workof many people who have gone beforeus, priests, religious and laity, who havegiven of their time and talents sogenerously.” Afterwards everyoneenjoyed a bbq in the church grounds inwarm sunshine.

We do love a scone!Scones are at the heart of a traditional English cream tea and they are a bigfavourite at the shop. They can be sweet or savoury with lots of differentversions. You can really create whatever flavour you like. The recipe here isa classic sweet scone. Lovely with clotted cream and strawberry jam, welove them with home-made lemon curd (see last month’s recipe). They areeasy to make as long as you remember to treat them gently. Why not trythem with fresh strawberries for Wimbledon?

Savour the Season

by Agnes Szucs

Hi I'm Agnes and I'm from Hungary. This is one of my mum's favourite recipes that is much loved by all the family. It's very easy and very tasty! Smoked Hungarian sausage is the star in this one-pot comfort food dish of layeredpotatoes and hard-cooked eggs smothered in sour cream, known as Rakott burgonya (RRAH-koht BOORR-gohn-yoh). It can be served as a luncheon dish with a green salad, as a main course or as a side dish.

Layered potato casserole 6 servings(Rakott burgonya)

• 2 1/4 lbs. potato (the type suitable forcooking)

• 6 hard-boiled eggs• 7 oz. smoked, spicy sausage (chorizo or

Csabai Hungarian)• 4 oz. butter or margarine• 2 cups sour cream• 7 oz. smoked bacon• salt

Start cooking the potatoes in their skins undercover in lightly salted water. Meanwhile cutthe sausage and hard-boiled eggs into rings, and the bacon into thin slices. When thepotatoes are half done, drain, let cool, peeland cut into rings thick enough so they won'tbreak when handled.

Butter the bottom and sides of a fireproofdish, lay half the bacon on the bottomfollowed by a layer of lightly salted potato

rings (about 1/3 of the potatoes), then thesausage rings, the hard-boiled egg rings, sprinkle a bit of butter on top and a liberalamount of sour cream. Continue layering thedish in this order until all the ingredients areused up. Finish with a layer of potatoes. Coverwith a layer of bacon and sprinkle over withsour cream. Bake, covered, in a pre-heatedoven for 25 to 30 minutes, remove the lid, andbake until the top is red and crispy.

Note: If you don't like to use bacon, you canleave it out, adding more butter or margarineinstead to prevent the layered potatoes frombeing dry.

Also, if you like vegetables, you can add greenpepper rings and tomatoes for layering.

If you are watching your diet, you can alsosubstitute bologna, hot dog slices or thinprecooked chicken slices for sausage, andkefir for the sour cream.

Vegetarians leave the meat out altogetherand make this dish with sliced mushrooms.

You can also use tomatoes, onions andmushrooms, and treat yourself to a dollop ofsour cream on top.

Enjoy! If you have a family favourite recipe that youwould like to share please contact us [email protected] thank you.

Suzanne Beard of Palmers Green Jewel in the North celebrates PalmersGreen on the website’s second birthday. In June 2012, Palmers GreenJewel in the North www.palmersgreenn13.com went live.

Palmers Green’s good old days

Two years later the website is a regular blog and agrowing encyclopaedia of Palmers Green where youcan find out about the famous and not so famouspeople who lived here, farms, houses, pubs, streets, events and oddities. Do take a look, and if you knowmore about a topic, please contribute!

So Why Jewel in the North? It’s partly a nod to writerPaul Scott - who was born here and went on to writeJewel in the Crown - but its also partly aboutdeveloping a sense of pride and optimism in wherewe live.

I know Palmers Green is a bit ragged round the edges.I know there is dog poo, betting shops and boy racerswho whizz around the streets. But I think we can alsohave some sneaking pride in where we live. We haveloads of green space, some good shops and fantasticEdwardian architecture. Besides, loving a placerequires being prepared to look beyond the surface, and accept it, warts and all. Everywhere hassomething to offer, and everywhere has a story too, if

you know where to look. What the website aims to show is that Palmers Greengenuinely has as much of a story as anywhere. It’stempting to say that there wasn’t much here before1900 but in fact there was agriculture, pastures, woodland, wildlife, country estates, some well to dogentry and big houses, many farm workers, blacksmiths, clergy, poets and writers, doctors, ostlers, publicans, railway workers. A whole life before our lifehere. Even our Edwardian ancestors are now gonebeyond immediate memory and now it’s us who aremaking our own histories.Loving a place is also about being prepared to dosomething, and in recent years there have been somany who are willing to do something for PG. I haveseen massive changes in my short time here – thismagazine, the Palmers Green Community website, agreat annual festival, Talkies Community Cinema,Baskervilles, Open Studios, Palmers Green Tales, history walks and courses from Joe Studman, thewonderful Bowes and Bounds and N21 websites, play

streets, the Lakes Estate Conservation Group, theBroomfield House ongoing campaign, the RuthWinston Centre, the University of the Third Age, theCommunity Orchard, the Conservatory, the GreenLanes Business Association… and the PalmersGreenery Café is nearly with us. Soon there will be aclock tower too (in fact two, there is another onecoming near the library), though personally I wouldlike to see much more or any green on the Triangle. It’s not perfect, but these are genuinely good days forPalmers Green. There’s lots more to be done though– isn’t there?

Palmers Green, today

by Kim Undy, Fashion Editor & Personal Stylist. For Personal Styling enquiries: [email protected]

Fashion: Black & White and Chic All Over

Designers across the international catwalks from our own Victoria Beckham and Stella McCartney to New York’s Calvin Kleinhave embraced black and white as their two favourite non-colours this summer. Take inspiration from these influentialdesigners and freshen up your spring-summer wardrobe with some great high-street hits.Black is visually slimming – as many of usappreciate! For the warmer months, show a littleflesh to keep this traditionally wintry shadeseason-appropriate. Keep arms and/or legs bare, and choose a flattering deep V or scoop neckline.Go for natural fabrics like silk, cotton and linenfor comfort in high temperatures, and wash at 30degrees or below to avoid fading. Dark and oliveskins look great in black, but if you’re fair or pale-skinned, it can be a little severe. For blondes &

redheads in particular, a black top-half that isfloaty or sheer creates a softer feel. Adding a littleextra blusher or a bold coral lipstick will alsoprevent you from looking too ‘washed out’.

Universally flattering, white is crisp, clean andfresh-looking – and plays up the slightest hint ofa tan. It reflects light on to the face, minimisesdark under-eye circles & creates the impressionyou’ve had your full 8 hours.

True white can be a little austere next to very fairskins – ivory is much kinder and compliments‘peaches and cream’ tones beautifully. From apractical point of view, it makes sense to checkthat your lovely new white (or ivory) purchasesare washable, otherwise they’ll spend thesummer at the dry cleaner instead of lookinggorgeous on you.

I hope everyone has seen Gonul Daniel's interview, on our website, duringwhich she tells us all about her work with SWEAT, an action group which istrying to ensure children have a local community school to attend. Sweatwas founded just over a year ago after a meeting attended by over 50people who were very concerned about the lack of community school placesin the south west of Enfield. Parents found it very difficult to get into eitherHazelwood or Walker schools. Gonul talks about the support for Ashmole toset up a primary school and an earlier decision by Enfield to set up a new 2form entry school, which now seems unlikely. Visit our website to view theinterview in full.

Next month we will be interviewing David Williamson who has worked sohard to bring the Talkies back to Palmers Green. We look forward to findingout how he has managed to do it and how popular Talkies has become. What has been your favourite Talkies evening? See page 16 for theforthcoming Talkies events in Palmers Green. We are also hoping to addanother interview with a long term Palmers Green resident, who has livedin the area for over 60 years.

by Kiri from Fabulous Hair CompanyHello, I hope you’re all well and enjoying the good weather. As I write this article the sun isout, it’s a lovely day & I hope it’s the same when you’re reading this. Officially, summer hasarrived and next month’s article is one not to be missed.

Hair Loss

Summer hair: How to look after your hair inthe sun. The things to avoid and good habits todevelop to make sure you keep your hairhealthy and looking great throughout thesummer months. But firstly, let’s conclude thesubject for the last two months. For our finalarticle on hair loss, I have included a few tipsand suggestions on remedies, I won’t includeprescription type remedies or specialisedtreatments as I feel that a dermatologist/trichologist or your GP would be the rightperson to speak to. If you have missed the lasttwo articles please contact me [email protected] and I willemail you copies.Every day, you probably lose somewherebetween 50 to 100 strands of hair whichdermatologists/trichologist say is perfectlynormal. It is when the hair loss exceeds this, that we need to look at the cause and thenthe remedy.Hair loss is no longer a condition barred byage! 15 or 50, when most of us walk out ofthe shower, the drain gets clogged with hairand when we brush, we lose huge amountsand we don’t know what to do about it. In thepast, hair loss was attributed as a sign ofaging and was a cause for a great deal ofembarrassment. But today, we no longer countby age but rather by so many other reasons. We hunt for a solution with great intensity andhere are a few simple techniques you canimplement at home to reduce and control hair

loss. However if you suffer from intensive hairloss, the best solution would be to consult adermatologist/trichologist before the damagebecomes permanent!Before we step into the solutions, let’s take apeek at what might be causing your hair loss.Causes• lack of proper nutrition • aging • hormonalchanges • stress • split ends • heredity• prolonged illness • medication like steroidsI have listed just a few reasons, but thereare many more!They all sound so very general don’t they, andthat is the very problem. They are so generaland common place that most off us cannotavoid the hair loss issue at all and we have toface them at some point in time.To curb hair loss, you need to include a fewbasic practices into your routine along withthe treatments that you adopt for betterresults. Here are a few things that will help.• Be gentle when combing your wet hair;

avoid stressing the hair and use adetangling spray to aid in combing. A goodrule is to comb wet hair and brush dry hair.

• Massage your scalp as frequently as youcan. This stimulates blood flow to your headwhich in turn promotes the growth of hairand better health.

• Don’t always opt for styles that require youto tie your hair up tight. As sleek andfashionable as this may look, it puts a greatdeal of pressure on the hair which can add

to the breakage and hair loss.• Hair styling is essential when you step out.

You need to look good at all times in today’sworld, but it is important that you subjectyour hair to as little heat as you can! Theheat tends to dry the hair shaft out, makingit dry and frizzy which over a period of timecauses the hair to go brittle. The ultimateresult will be hair loss.

• Do not wash hair with hot water for the verysame reason; always use cool water orwater at room temperature. Dry and frizzyhair when you walk out of the shower is theindication that the water was too hot foryour hair.

• All said and done, just these simpleprecautions may not be enough to preventhair loss. It will always hold true, that onlywhen you are healthy inside will your hairbe healthy too. Your hair is made up ofproteins and is alive at the roots, like anyother living organism it also requiresnutrients to remain healthy and grow. Thereare a few things that you can add to yourdiet to ensure that you intake sufficientquantities of these nutrients. First andforemost will be proteins of course, they arethe building blocks of the hair shaft after all.Vitamin A, B complex, C and E are essential, each of these performs a significant role.Vitamin B complex is most popularly knownfor its importance in hair growth and hairloss control. Vitamin C prevents premature

graying. Last but not least, iron- deficiencyof iron can be a source of severe hair loss, which is why women suffering from anemiaexhibit a great amount of hair loss.

• Work out. Yeah, you read that right, workout. Exercise increases the blood flowthrough the body and that helps instimulation of the scalp.

• If you already have dry hair, then rethinkyour coffee habit and evaluate your caffeineconsumption. Caffeine further depletes thebody of its natural resources of nutrients andthe nutrients required for hair are not sparedeither! So cut back on the coffee and moveon to something healthier and that whichpromotes good health.

• Drink a lot of water and stay hydrated.• Keep the scalp clean. Use a good quality

shampoo that is mild and formulated foryour hair type.

• Trim your hair regularly to avoid the troublesof split ends.

Welcome to my new monthly MusicColumn, where I have the pleasure ofwriting about new up and coming localacts. This month I will be talking aboutWinchmore Hill band 'Hot Under Collar'and their recent gig at The Garage, Islington

Hot Under Collar are a 4 piece band whoblend Funk, Rock, Soul and Hip Hop to forma unique and mature sound way beyondtheir tender age of 18. One of the bestthings about my job of promoting acts isseeing bands grow and develop asmusicians and people, so I was intrigued tosee how they would fair on a bigger stageat a big venue compared to the pubs andbars stages I have put them on previously.

Hot Under Collar did not disappoint. Theybounced onstage with determination andconfidence that you rarely see in youngbands, much to the adoration of their loyalfans, and ripped straight into their setlistconsisting of catchy lyrics, punchy bass lines, melodic guitar riffs and some of the tightestdrumming you are likely to hear. Not onlywere their own fans captivated and singingalong, but by the end of the first song thewhole venue was watching intentlyknowing they were hearing and watchingsomething special. It was also nice to seethe older generation in the audienceappreciating what these young boys weredoing.

Their facebook page says “We are a groupof friends brought together due to a mutuallove of music and performing” and this wasvery evident on the Garage stage. Theyseem to bounce off each other creatively, and most importantly they looked as if theywere having the time of their lives, anenergy which the crowd fed off throughoutthe nights show.

The combination of various music styles isvery unique, and fits somewhere betweenthe Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Led Zeppelin, but with a more modern and commercialsound. You can easily picture them beingplayed on Radio 1 for the younger crowd, and on Magic FM alongside the classics.

It was nice to see them throw in a JustinTimberlake cover of 'Love Stoned' whichthey played in a more up-tempo and heavierstyle, which worked and delighted thecrowd, but it was their own well writtensongs which got the best response.

‘Songs of Change,’ on which they closed theshow, is an up-tempo crowd pleaser, and Icannot wait to hear this on their EP whichthey tell me they are working on at themoment.

Josh Ali on Vocals, Chris Lambrou on Guitar,Denzel Clarkson on Bass and HermanKiafuca on Drums who make up Hot UnderCollar have a musical maturity which willonly grow and develop over time, and Istrongly recommend that you check outtheir facebook page to keep up to date ontheir upcoming shows and releases. You cancatch them Live at The Palmers GreenFestival, on September 7th in BroomfieldPark.

HOT SUMMER SIZZLERS

To help create the style and atmosphere you desire in your conservatory or garden room you will need to consider how youwant to use the space. Functionality and form are of the utmost importance. One thing you do want to ensure is that this roomis used to its full extent, and that it is comfortable all the year round. Being constructed mainly of glass, conservatories andgarden rooms have, in the past been areas of great heatloss and radiation. This however can be reducedsubstantially by the clever use of window furnishings.Gone are the days where we cannot enter a room whichis uncomfortably cold or hot for there are several optionsto resolve this situation and all can achieve a stylish lookwithin your home:-

Specialist Blind ProductsManufacturers have worked hard on reducing heat lossand radiation and have some great products available.Roller, vertical and pleated blinds with insulationproperties and control of solar heat by reflection keepyour conservatory cool in the summer whilst maintainingwarmth and comfort in the winter. Blinds have theadditional advantage of giving us excellent command ofthe amount of light entering a room.

A great benefit of pleated blinds is they can bemanufactured to fit any shape of window so are ideal asroof blinds as well. Great advances in technology mean

that we no longer have to stand on a chair with a poletrying to open or close our roof blinds as motorisation ofmost blinds is available. A relatively new innovation called Perfect Fit blindsbenefit from being fixed in a frame on the window, decreasing the amount of light and radiation seepage. They offer a seamless look which is clean cut and neat.

ShuttersOne of the earliest forms of window dressing, this is asuperb product to help assist with light control andenhance any interior setting. The options for woods andcolour painted finishes are extensive. They can help youachieve any look you wish from contemporary rightthrough to traditional.

What to do next?Once you have an idea as to how you would like to usethis space its best to enlist the help of an expert. AtDrapemasters we offer free advice on all these productsas well as a full interior design service. We will come outand measure your windows, show you samples and

recommend the best solution for your situation followingthrough with flawless fitting, safeguarding allmanufacturers’ warranties. We will ensure your windowdressings realise their full beauty and potential allowingyou to sit back and enjoy the atmosphere created bythem.

Summer is here!?

Property Matters

Sophisticated outdoor living by Anne Springall

Well, let’s hope that it is here to stayAssuming that we’re over the worst of the winter and thatat least a few sunny days are ahead we’ll all be looking tospruce up any outdoor areas that we have in our homes.Whilst some are lucky enough to have gardens, everybodyhas at least a windowsill!

So, where do we start trying to make the space outside ourwindows fit for Summer? I’m no gardening expert but Ican hopefully offer a few tips on accessories!

Just like the inside of your home, decide on a ‘look’ andtry to see it through. For a sleek contemporary feel, stick togreen plants and matching pots, maybe lining pots up inrows of three? A selection of different pots groupedtogether in different sizes, heights and colours gives amore homely feel and you could even plant in some oldteacups and teapots for a chintzy English look. If you areshort of floor space; planters can be fixed to a wall, a fenceor to the side of a shed. Again, think about how you mightarrange them to create the look you are after?

If storage is a problem, try and use the space under tables, chairs and benches, and as with the planters think if youcould fix a cupboard on to an outside wall to save floorspace. A string of fairy lights can bring an outdoor spacealive as the evening starts to draw in; and don’t forget thatsoft furnishings can still be used outside, cushions andthrows make a patio or deck into an ‘outside room’ andsomething as simple as a tablecloth can ring the changes. If you really want to decorate your outdoor space, youcould put up bunting either in a particular colour tocomplement your plants and cushions or in pastel shadesand floral fabrics to fit that ‘chintzy’ look. Coloured glasscandle holders or a string of lanterns are other ways tointroduce colour.

The 1970’s swing seat has had a revival and beenredesigned by many companies to suit a sleek moderngarden, and of course, comes with its own built in shade.Pod seats are also very fashionable and not only shield youfrom the sun but can come with drinks’ holders, lightingand incorporated sound systems! Modern parasols havebeen re-designed as statement pieces and outdoorkitchens are replacing the humble barbeque.

Why not spruce up your exterior paintwork to add a freshfeel. You could even consider painting your fences in subtle

tones to add ambiance. Besides its cosmetic effects, paintprovides outdoor structures with protection against theelements. Fences, in particular, need a protective coat ofpaint every 2 to 3 years. Fence-painting is a time-consuming, but important, undertaking, you canstrengthen the fence, reducing the likelihood of it needingto be replaced.

So, let’s expand our living space to outdoors and keep ourfingers crossed that it lasts. Whatever you decide to do,have fun and turn your outside space into your very ownoasis even if it’s only a window box!

Your Legal Questions Answered by Fariz Uvais

I have legal expenses insurance cover and the insuranceprovider has informed me that I cannot instruct my ownsolicitor under the policy. Instead, they say that I have to usetheir nominated solicitor. So, I would like to know if I have touse their nominated solicitor, or am I free to instruct my ownsolicitor?

The Insurance Companies (Legal Expenses Insurance) Regulations1990 (‘the Regulations’) provide a policyholder with the authority tochoose who it wishes to instruct as its lawyer. Regulation 6 states that:

“(1) Where under a legal expenses insurance contract recourse is hadto a lawyer (or other person having such qualification as may benecessary) to defend, represent or serve the interests of the insured inany inquiry or proceedings, the insured shall be free to choose thatlawyer (or other person).

(2) The insured shall also be free to choose a lawyer (or other person

having such qualifications as may be necessary) to serve his interestswhenever a conflict of interests arises.

(3) The above rights shall be expressly recognised in the policy."

The Court of Appeal provided additional guidance of the aboveRegulation in the case of Brown-Quinn v Equity SyndicateManagement Ltd (2012), where it was held that “Before-the-event”legal expenses insurers cannot reject a policyholder’s choice of a non-panel solicitor because the lawyer will not accept payment on theirrates. However, insurers can rely on policy terms to restrict aninsured’s indemnity to certain prescribed rates of remuneration, provided that this does not effectively render the insured’s legalentitlement to the freedom to choose a lawyer as meaningless.

It is clear, therefore, that you certainly have the freedom to instructyour own solicitor. It would be sensible to simply ask your ownsolicitor to take up these points with the insurer to ensure that yourinsurer accepts your choice of whom to instruct.

As afellow of the RSA (Royal Society of the Arts) Ella is committed to promoting thecircular economy in her own small way, for instance by using high-quality materialsthat age well and are recyclable. Her seasonal collections of ready-to-buy homeaccessories, stationery products and gifts are selling to a diverse range of stores, museums and galleries in the UK and around the world. She also works to commissionfor commercial, charitable and private clients, with a particular interest incollaborating with interior designers and architects.

Talking about Business, Ella says: “My uncle always used to say: “Play to your strengthsand work with people better than you” and both have stuck. I would add it takestime to get to know them, so be patient with yourself!”

I became a member of the Creative Exchange in 2013 aftertaking part in the Open Studios and Arts Trail that year. I enjoyshowing my work to a local audience and engaging with like-minded people in the local community.

I started painting abstract art in 2006. I am self-taught and I’mcontinuously developing as an artist. I feel very passionate about, and dedicated to, the process of painting and my work has beensold nationally in the UK as well as in Europe.

Much of my earlier range of work is concerned with memories and dreams, peelingaway at them layer by layer. In my recent work I focus on abstract representations oflandscapes, finding inspiration in the beauty of the outside world. While many of mypaintings reflect my passion for a vibrant mix of colour my palette has become moremuted recently, playing with a subtler shade of colour. I aim to give my paintings asmuch of texture and 'feel' as possible. My exhibition will feature a mixture of abstractlandscapes as well as new work from this year.
