Current situation of Electricity
The demand of electricity in Pakistan increases day by day
Using renewable sources we can compensate this gap to some extent
Current Installed Capacity (MW)Project Demand
Gap (MW)Year MW
23,538
2015 36,217 12,679
2020 54,359 30,821
2025 80,566 57,028
2030 113,695 90,157
Introduction
A large amount of potential energy is wasted in speed breaker through friction, every time when vehicle passes over it.
Why don’t we just utilize this potential energy to produce electricity?
So this will be a small step to improve the situations (power crisis)
So Electricity can be generated by using vehicle’s weight (potential energy) as an input of prime mover or shaft
This Generated can be used for outdoor lighting/street light, this way we an save the electric supply which is being consumed by street lights.
Advantages
Power generation with low cost and using non-conventional energy sources which will help us to conserve the conventional energy sources to meet the future demand.
By using this method, electricity will be generated throughout the year without depending on other factors.
Easy for maintenance and no fuel transportation problem. Pollution free power generation. Less floor area required and no obstruction to traffic. No need of manpower during power generation.
Construction of speed breaker
The speed breaker of vibrating type
When a vehicle crosses the speed breaker, it gets pressed
The material used for speed breaker is steel
The shape of speed breaker is trapezoidal
Basic Principle
Simple energy conversion from Mechanical(potential energy of vehicle) to Electrical.
Possible using 3 different mechanisms:I. Crank-shaft mechanismII. Roller mechanismIII. Rack- Pinion mechanism
Working
Basically reciprocating motion of the speed-breaker is converted into rotary motion using the rack and pinion arrangement.
Power calculation
Let us consider, The mass of any vehicle = 300Kg (Approximately) Height of speed brake = 15 cm Weight of the Body = 300 Kg x 9.81 = 2943 N Distance traveled by the body = Height of the speed breaker = 15cm Work done = weight of the body x distance travelled by the vehicle Power = Work done/Second = (2943 x 0.15)/60 = 7.3575 Watts Output Power developed for 1 vehicle passing over the speed Breaker arrangement for one minute = 7.3575 watts Power developed for 60 minutes (1 hr) = 441.45 watts Power developed for 24 hours = 10.5948 KW This power generated by vehicles is more than sufficient to run four street lights in the
night time.
