A sneak-peak into the transformational journeys of our PGP-BABI alumni

  • 18

    StoriesStudent

Could you tell us a little about your background?I come from a traditional software development background, with 18 years of experience. Project – Program Management is my core strength alongside hands on experience in the IBM Mainframe technology, and most of my experience comes from Financial Domain, predominantly in Software Development / Maintenance / Enhancement Banking industry.

When you were thinking of switching, why did you choose Analytics as your area of interest?Should I call it luck by chance?

I was desperate for a change, perhaps a change in an organization, but they say when you need something most, you won’t get it. I had to wait for the right opportunity. So, when the opportunity knocked on my door, it was not only an organization change, but also a complete paradigm shift for me. I could see a small ray of hope in the field of analytics, although it came at the cost of changing traditional IT companies, and moving into consulting, wherein you are on your own. Before affirming my decision, I did lots of research about this field, checked with friends and colleagues, read lots of reports and finally decided, that yes, this is the area I should move into.

What made you choose GL Program? Before joining the GL Program, I was already working on an Analytics assignment. Being new, I had to read a lot of books, articles, blogs etc. on the subject. Still, I realized that a formal education would help me in establishing myself in this new field. As usual, I discussed with some like-minded colleagues, and then started my hunt for the right institution. The likes of IIT’s and IIM’s along with many private institutions were on our list, with varied course durations starting from 3 months to 2 years. After going through numerous reviews and feedback, I finally chose GL, being a blend of industry expertise and highly experienced teaching faculty. It’s a reputed brand in the management space with a focus on practical and tie-ups with many analytical firms. I did a compact yet quite powerful one-year course in Data Analytics. Of course, placement assistance during and after course completion helped many candidates.

Vilas Wakale, an alumnus of Great Lakes’ Post Graduate Program in Business Analytics, is one of the many from the program to have transitioned from technology to analytics. Vilas has been in the software industry for 18 years and was working with HSBC GLT as a project manager for software development since the last 9 years.

He is now an independent consultant in the Ministry of Home Affairs on an Analytics Project, wherein he administers the vast data (structured and unstructured) from different domains such as Telecom, Banking, Transport, etc., and works towards its inference through data analysis.

Successfully transitioned to a career in Analytics after working for 18 years in the IT sector

What made you opt for this Analytics program? After spending 7 years in IT services, I had reached a crossroad with one question occupying my mind – ‘Where do I see myself in 10 years from now?’

I wanted to nudge my career in a direction where the world was moving and analytics was the foremost option that interested me. This is when I decided that if I need to build my career in analytics, I need to be skilled at it and started exploring programs that would equip me for the same.

And then, Why Great Lakes?Well, my experience says that, Analytics professional should have better business knowledge, good analytical & logical thinking, strong statistical skills, visualization and storytelling skills.

After doing a lot of research and consulting with peers and seniors, I came to the conclusion that the Great Lakes’ analytics program is structured to cover 360 degrees of analytic sphere and a professional enrolled with this program get to learn analytical, data mining and visualization concepts.

Share your experiences where you have actually applied analytics skills to solvethe real-time business problems? Our Capstone project is the classic example wherein we provided the utility level insights and forecast to the leading US manufacturer which helps them to plan the demand, classify the machines and prepare the shutdown plan at machine level.

What made you choose Great Lakes Program? The experience that the faculty brings, the course curriculum which is business oriented (not many schools tie their analytics program to business which is the most important, but Great Lakes does) and the peer group were few main reasons to choose the Great Lakes PGP-BABI Program.

How did the PGP-BABI program assist you in this transition?GL supports students with exposure to real time analytics projects and career connects, that can give students a jump start in their analytics journey.

The course was interesting and I especially appreciate the experienced faculty who shared their industry experiences with the students. I was able to develop a really solid understanding of analytics and the industry exposure was helpful as well because we got to work on real life data sets.

The relationships with the institute are a lifetime and they are always there when hurdles have to be crossed.

Once you decided to switch careers, how did you go about picking up some analytics skills?Plenty of complex and real data is available for free on the internet. Also several books on analytical problem solving and programming for analytics are also available. Though these definitely helped me build my skills, however, the urge to learn from the experts was always there. Additionally, in order to survive and lead in the long run, I felt the necessity of undertaking a proper course in Analytics and hence, enrolled for Great Lakes’ PGP-BABI.

Pazhamalai Jayaraman has more than 2 decades of professional experience in Information Security.

He is the Head of Information Security and Technology assurance at ANZ, prior to this he was the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at Wipro. Pazhamalai has also worked at National Informatics Center (NIC), Government of India under the ambit of Planning Commission.

What made you opt for this Analytics program?Information Technology is a very competitive and evolving domain. In my opinion, IT started as the means to cut costs and gradually transitioned to being a business enabler. With ‘Digital’ strongly being embraced by organizations and IT & Business becoming synonyms, we can simply say ‘IT is indeed Business’.

The industry is changing at a rapid pace and it is essential for an individual to stay abreast with the latest industry demands and technology trends to avoid becoming obsolete. Among SMAC (Social, Media, Analytics & Cloud), I thought ‘Analytics’ will take me closer to business and hence, I opted for Great Lakes’ Business Analytics program. Today, after the successful completion of the PGP-BABI course, looking at the buzz amongst the recruiters, colleagues and peers, I feel delighted at my decision to choose the program offered by Great Lakes Institute of Management.

How did Industry exposure during the course assist in evolving your skills in Analytics?‘Industry connect’ sessions helped in getting exposure to real world corporate business problems as it provided the opportunity to apply analytics concepts and tools on data sets and see the impact of decisions taken based on data. Interactions with speakers from industry helped in gaining an in-depth understanding of the applications of analytics concepts, tools and techniques across enterprises in various domains.

You have seen analytics evolve over the years? Any insights?Analytics is here to stay. But, while there has been the technology available to solve Big data issues, organizations still have some basic data hygiene issues to be sorted out. Some of the tasks at hand for the enterprises are making reliable data available, integration of systems, using common data taxonomy and creating of robust data architecture. Overall, in my viewpoint Data scientists and Chief Data (Digital) Officers are expected to play the role of ‘Change Agent’ leading to the adoption of an “Analytics” driven culture and thereby making a difference.

Clarence Wong learned several Analytics tools during his career spanning over nine years across multiple reputed companies. Having witnessed the growing importance of analytics across domains, he decided to learn advanced skills that were in great demand in the industry.

After considering several options, he chose the Post graduate program in Business Analytics & Business Intelligence from Great Lakes Institute of Management. During the program, Clarence got an enviable job offer from one of the senior participants from ValueLabs as Project Lead – Analytics, where he was responsible for setting up their global analytics consultancy.

Please tell us briefly about your role and responsibilities prior to joining the course and what motivated you to join this course. While working at ADP, I had a dual role, wherein my major responsibilities included working on Analytics and leading lean 6 Sigma initiatives. But lack of professional training in analytics and not having access to a quality network of professionals in analytics were limiting the possibility of getting new and challenging opportunities. This is when I decided to opt for a formal training and certification in analytics. I had done a lot of research on the available courses wrt faculty, content, experiential learning etc. and I had also interacted with Prof. Bappa (Program Director, PGP- BABI, Gurgaon), who gave me complete clarity about the course and as a result I zeroed in on the course offered by GLIM.

What did you like the most about the course? The curriculum was well structured which ensured comprehensive coverage of all relevant topics like R, SAS, Tableau etc. In addition to this, the professors were extremely flexible based on the learning requirements of the batch; they were always ready to spend more time on certain topics based on the feedback given by the batch.

The industry speakers were very knowledgeable and had hands on experience on the topics delivered by them. Interacting with them on real world problems was one of the biggest takeaways from the course.

Tell us something about the experiential learning during the program. The capstone project picked by my group was a live assignment that the company I had switched to was working on. We were able to implement the learning and outcome from the project at work and it was appreciated by all stakeholders.

“ ““There is a growing need for Analytics professionals which is there to stay. Analytics require professionals who have the adequate depth as data scientists as well as the domain knowledge to formulate, interpret and solve business problems. The PGP-BABI program has the perfect blend of both. The program starts with basic management concepts, graduates to analytics tools and techniques and rounds off with industry led models in applications of analytics.

Almost one third of the incoming students have exposure in analytics and within six months of completion of the course, twice the figure are working in the analytics domain. This is a testament to the success of the program- both in terms of attracting the right talent, nurturing them and making it sought after in the industry.”
