attempt to harness local technology is done with a business minded approach in the global context. This is a complex process, worth the price if there is to be a better world in the future.

At this point we look back years past, at what we have been able to accomplish, the differences we have made to the lives of otherwise desperate Tanzanian children. We are proud of each student, both in the scholarship program and at Peace House Secondary School. The resilience and effort the students put into their education calls for our prompt response and it is a constant reminder to us of our commitment and what we aspire for the in the country and the continent at large. We take cognizance of the fact that a furnace that melts gold starts by only a spark. In the same manner what we offer, though it may appear very little compared to the overwhelming need on the ground as far as Africa is concerned, but the same will ignite positive change and reshape the future Africa. This will happen because we educate, we touch the future and all this is because of you, because you believe in the course as we do. We partner and together we make a difference.  Your involvement with PHA does not go unnoticed, it leaves a mark. A hope for a brighter future is realized by what you do by partnering with us. On behalf of the children in our projects, the Tanzanian community and Africa at large, I would like to extend sincere appreciation for your support!

Books - A Gift of Hope

Thank you to Joanne Pastel of Wayzata, MN, for the generous donation towards the needs of the PHS Library.

Books have the power to open children’s minds to their potential and dreams of what might be possible. Unfortunately, books are scarce in Tanzanian schools. Most Tanzanian secondary schools do not have school libraries and in classrooms, textbooks have to be shared. Its not uncommon for 6 or even up to 10 students share one textbook. Peace House Secondary School (PHS) is unique, not only in the fact that it is providing orphans and vulnerable children with a free education, but also in the fact that we offer students a library. Most of the students have never checked out a book before coming to PHS, let alone ever visited a library. Reading books and newspapers helps the students practice their English skills and learn the simple joy of reading for pleasure. PHS students prefer English language books that have been written by Tanzanian authors, as they can better relate to the stories. Peace House prefers to purchase Tanzanian books to help support domestic authors and the local publishing industry. American football crossed a new international border when the Drake University Bulldogs and CONADEIP All-Stars from Mexico met on the gridiron, painted for the first time on African soil in Arusha Tanzania.

Players and coaches taking part in the Global Kilimanjaro Bowl held their first practices, coaching clinics for youth and a press conference at the Tanzania Game Trackers (TGT) facility in the city of Arusha on Thursday, May 19. The coaching clinics will be held following team practices at TGT and introduced local youngsters to the basics of American football.

Global Football worked in association with Tanzania Irie, which provides a free sport service to underprivileged youth by running camps, lessons and events with experienced coaches around Arusha. The

sport is a new concept to the people of Tanzania, so the Bulldogs and CONADEIP players and coaches worked on the simple fundamentals of passing, catching and running with a ball and taught the key rules that are applied on the field of play.

The students involved in the clinics also took part in the halftime celebrations, giving them a chance to show off some of the American football skills they practiced. They also performed cultural dancing and acrobatics. All of the students were extremely excited and have already started identifying with their favorite teams!

High school students from opposite sides of the world have come together for a truly unique opportunity. 8 students and 2 faculty from Minnehaha Academy, a school in Minneapolis, Minnesota, are currently spending their “June Term” at Peace House Secondary School (PHS). Upon arrival, each Minnehaha student met his or her PHS Host student, and presented gifts of donated graphing calculators and camping equipment. For two weeks, the students are being fully immersed in Tanzanian culture, sharing meals, dorm rooms, and stories with their Tanzanian brother or sister. They’ve already cheered on the Rugby team, participated in an impromptu talent show, and discovered a mutual affinity for Justin Bieber! The rest of the trip will consist of service projects on

campus and in the community alongside their PHS hosts, including a hike to a nearby primary school to deliver books. One Minnehaha Academy student blogged about her struggle to find the word that truly described her new Tanzanian friends: “I’ve tried vibrant, open-minded, bold, peaceful, loving,” and after much deliberation, she decided on “ALIVE! They are ALIVE!

These people are unlike anyone back at home! They are all of the words listed above and more…but most of all, they are ALIVE...I know I’ll never forget the memories I’ve made here in Tanzania, and I’m sure there will be more to come!”

For information about a high school student trip to PHS, contact Volunteer Coordinator, Elaina Reinke: [email protected] or 952-465-0050.

Our business model allows for the majority of profits donated to Peace House Africa. Sixty percent of all profits go directly to our partner institution. Half of the donation enables students to attend secondary school, while the other half helps fund the building of Peace House Institute - the entrepreneurship school to be built in Tanzania for post-secondary education. The remainder helps spur the growth of Global CaféNation in order to provide a greater global impact. Whether simply making a donation to provide a direct scholarship for a student to attend school or purchasing one of many coffees with a cause, any contribution makes a significant difference in today's world where roughly 50 percent of the population lives on under one dollar per day.The gourmet coffee that Global CaféNation brings to the market stretches to every corner of the globe and makes clear impacts each day. Working together with the small villages of Trapichitos in Guatemala to produce directly traded farm2cup coffee or bringing to market fair trade certified and organically grown coffees, ethical practice and integrity are our utmost important values. In direct trade, roasters travel to the coffee's country of origin to buy beans directly from the farmer. Unlike other trade practices, which rely heavily on middlemen, direct trade has growers and buyers as its the main players, so communication between the two parties is essential. With an envisioned dream to one day have coffees from all over the world provide education to each country of coffee origin, our ambitions fuel a fiery passion. Help us help those in need.

Bringing together premium coffee from around the world and educationally deprived children, Global CaféNation was quickly born. In today's age, many large scale companies donate funds to boost public image and create a "feel-good" sensation among employees. On the other hand, Global CaféNation's sole purpose mirrors its mission. Similar to taking a coffee bean from its initial growth stage in a red pod through the process until it's lightly roasted brown color, the company carefully directs and spurs the educational growth of students in Tanzania, Africa from Form I secondary education through graduation. Following passage of secondary school, students have the opportunity to take their newly acquired skills into the real world or continue learning. Global CaféNation serves as this catalyst by partnering with Peace House Africa.

Working together with Peace House Africa, initial curtail of the brain drain takes affect immediately due to the ample opportunities offered on the beautiful 100 acre campus in northern Tanzania just east of Arusha. Knowing ideas are not turned into a reality without a plan, the company strives to provide equal opportunities to join the battle against poverty stricken areas around the globe. Impacting children every day, creating better lives, and inspiring shared visions amongst the students, Peace House Africa stands out amongst other typical non-profit organizations in today's world.
