The University of Malta, Department of Pharmacy
The study of medicinal plants and chemicals which cure
diseases or alleviate symptoms has been humankind’s
priority since time immemorial, but especially so since
the Middle Ages, with Malta being no exception to this.
The earliest known apothecary in Malta was Magister
Salvatus about the year 1450, and since then, pharmacy
and pharmaceutical studies have brought about an
evolution of the trade which resulted in one of the most
advanced, quality oriented and innovative industries
which the Nation can boast of.
In the 1530’s, the Knights of St. John made it mandatory
for aspiring apothecaries to sit for an exam. This practice
lead to the opening of the School of Pharmacy in
approximately 1676 at the Holy Infirmary which
culminated in the opening of the Diploma in Pharmacy
in 1729.
The Department of Pharmacy at the University of Malta
boasts a selection of courses aimed at delivering
competent and well-trained students into various areas
of the pharmaceutical scenario. Ample care is given to
ensure that the students benefit from the knowledge
which the top minds of our generation can pass on by
theoretical and practical sessions. The overall
experience results in students who are not only capable
of performing their duties, but to go above and beyond
what is expected of them in order to succeed and excel
in giving patients the best possible service. This
contributes greatly to the Nation’s reputation of keeping
up (and improving upon) global trends with regards to
the pharmaceutical scenario.
The University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Pharmacy
The UIC College of Pharmacy (UIC COP) is a public
pharmacy school with two campuses located in Chicago
and Rockford, Illinois. Established in 1859, the UIC
College of Pharmacy stands as the oldest academic unit
of the University of Illinois, one of the largest and most
comprehensive research universities in the nation.
More than 185 research and clinical faculty conduct
research and provide training to more than 160
graduate students and postdoctoral trainees, as well as
650 professional students. The College of Pharmacy
boasts a powerful alumni network of more than 9,000
people, including leaders in the profession and change
agents who are loyal to students and graduates entering
the field.
Why Opt for the Pharm D. ?
The Doctorate of Pharmacy programme enables
pharmacists to build up on their already-established
career in a way that allows them to develop their own
professional portfolio. Skills relating to clinical pharmacy
acquired prior to the start of the course are fine-tuned
and improved upon in order to establish a new
professional with the highest possible academic
qualification.
Graduates are empowered to be decisive and critical,
able to handle situations which require a high level of
expertise and decision-making. Such situations are
solved by the application of scientific and evidence-
based knowledge and experience gathered throughout
the theoretical and experiential parts of the program
Programme Features
The Doctorate of Pharmacy programme features
innovative lecturing methods in collaboration with the
lecturing staff at the UIC. Lectures are delivered
throughout the first year of the program, allowing for
students to carry out experiential sessions and their
doctoral research dissertation in the subsequent years.
Lectures are delivered by local and guest lecturers at the
University of Malta Valletta campus, with several
lectures being delivered by the UIC staff via video-
conferencing. This gives a fresh perspective to the
students as it introduces a whole new set of healthcare
systems and policies.
Professional Skills and Career Prospects
Graduates are expected to integrate clinical pharmacy
practical aspects with evidence-based
pharmacotherapeutic concepts as well as develop an
advanced understanding of clinical pharmacy skills.
Graduates are also expected to be able to develop novel
applications for innovative processes and practice
scenarios, identify strategic priorities within specific
clinical pharmacy scenarios and critically assess
theoretical knowledge, principles and concepts as
applied to specific disciplines.
The Demonstration of reflective and evaluative skills for
service development and research activities is
conventional for the students, as well as designing and
undertaking research in clinical pharmacy.
Once the students graduate from the Pharm. D. , they
will be able to work in policy-drafting areas in order to
advance the local, European and global healthcare
scenario. Graduates will also be able to assume
professional leadership roles that will drive
developments in clinical practice development, drug use
and service which draws on scientific, evidence-based
research.
