What is a Pharmacist?
A person licensed to prepare and dispense drugs and medicines.
Education and Training
• Colleges; Drake, Auburn, Butler, Creighton, Idaho State, Howard, ect.
• Pharm.D. degree • 2 years of specific professional study• Math, chemistry, biology, physics, and
humanities and social sciences• 3 or more years at a college or university
What do Pharmacists do?
• Dispense medications• Advise medical staff on selection/effect of
medicines• Plan, monitor, and evaluate drug programs• Counsel hospitalized patients on use of drugs
Specific Activities of a Pharmacist
• Calculate volumes of medicines• Assess identity, strength, and purity of meds• Review prescriptions• Publish educational information• Train students• Prepare sterile solutions• Label pharmaceuticals
