• Identifying two installations, small one and medium one in Giza Governorate

• Develop and implement" low cost, low-tech" rehabilitation of the two selected installations to increase their safety measures.

• So from the point of view of safety, Chlorine hazards are reduced by reduction of No. of chlorine full drums to two only instead of eight ones.

• In addition they are separately confined in airtight rooms, equipped with chlorine gas detection detectors having siren and warning signals.

• In case of chlorine leakage, detected by the detector, the water spraying system is manually activated from outside.

• The polluted water is then collected through the drain pipes into the retention basin.

• The Vacuum Regulator is mounted on a manifold equipped with Chlorine valve and a heater.

• Altogether are wall-mounted inside the Chlorine confinement. at Manial Sheha.

• A flexible cupper connection is used to connect the vacuum regulator with the Chlorine drum discharge valve.

• Out from the vacuum regulator comes the vacuum line going outside the Chlorine confinement. So upgrading the safety measure by having the high pressure cupper tube inside, only the vacuum line outside to distribute Chlorine dosing to the four units, using the existing flow meters, ejectors and booster pumps.

• An ADVANCE single point Gas detector series 1610 B is provided. includes the detailed specifications of such gas detector. It is highly sensitive & it monitors gas levels below OSHA requirements, for either Chlorine or sulfur dioxide gas.

• The sensor responds immediately to the presence of gas, and quickly recovers after the gas has cleared. It has audible and visual alarms. Series 1610B design includes protection against radio frequency / electromagnetic interferences (RFI/EMI) typically present at industrial and municipal plants

• Put on working safety equipment (gloves, apron and Face shield or goggles).

• Inspect exterior of chlorine gas feed or storage room for any hazards (pressure relief line venting chlorine, blocked exhaust fan louvers...etc.).

• Inspect interior of chlorine gas feeder storage room through the window for any hazards (chlorine leaks).

• If any hazard is found, stop to plan your next action. Get help now if you need it.

• If no hazard exists, proceed to the next step.

• Turn on the ventilation fan. This fan must be running whenever anybody is in the chlorine gas room.

• Ensure that the chlorine gas feed or storage room air is being blown out without any restrictions.

• Open the door a crack and sniff the air for chlorine gas before opening it fully.

• The following start-up and shut-down guidelines are to be used during equipment maintenance and repair in the chlorine gas feed room.

• This DOES include instances such as equipment maintenance or repair; operating manifold valves; making or breaking piping connections; and changing active cylinders.

• Inspect the following equipment outside and inside the chlorine room for proper connections, any obstructions or any breaks:

• Water line (piping, elbows, valves, and tees). • Chlorinator lines (piping, elbows, valves, and tees). • Electric lines (plugged into sockets)

• Ensure that the fresh air inlet, exhaust vent/louvers are not obstructed and that the suction side of exhaust fan is unobstructed.

• Vent lines (not plugged, vented to outside, and insect screen is on the outlet end).

• Start flow of water or ensure system is in "ON" mode.

• At first such field survey visits were correlated with the workshops.

• According to an invitation coordinated with the representatives of the industrial facilities participating in the workshop.

• This way had a negative impact on survey visits rate due to long distance between industrial zones leading to waste in time and high cost of visits.

• According to experience gained during preliminary visits, it was planned to make the field survey visits zone wise to save time and money.

• It was decided to make 100% survey for the industrial zones.

• To create an actual data base for the existing industrial facilities.

Accomplishments:

• A database system is designed to include all existing factories not only those related to the chosen industrial sectors.

• Each factory has full information concerning the followings items:

• General information.• Main and secondary raw materials used.• Data of resulting waste (liquid, solid).• Waste treatment and disposal.

• According to the received complete questionnaires, data entry application started.

• A 100% field survey was done for all industrial facilities not only those of the chosen sectors .

• All factories in all visited zones, have been given questionnaire to be filled and returned within two weeks.

• A preliminary questionnaire was designed to be filled by the survey team during the visit.
