President’s Message Hello All:
The excitement is building as we prepare for the PHCA combined Western Regional and National Specialties coming up in Greeley, Colorado. I hope to see many of you there showing and competing with your beautiful hounds. From agility and conformation, to obedience and lure coursing, there truly will be "something for everyone". There are even some brave souls who will compete in the Triathlon, showing off the versatility of the breed we all love.
Also just around the corner is the Eastern Regional Specialty, coming up in December 4-8 in Oaks, PA. Information is available on both FaceBook and the PHCA web site, and this looks to be another exciting specialty where pharaoh hound owners can show off their hounds.
Finally, and as many of you are aware the PHCA established the Pharaoh Hound Club of America Legacy award last year when it was presented to Pam Haig. I am excited to say that this year two more icon of our breed will receive the PHCA Legacy Award in recognition of their long-term and invaluable contribution to the breed. This year’s recipients will be announced and awarded at the banquet during the National weekend in Colorado. More details to follow, including a detailed profile of each of the recipients in the next edition of the Scribe.

Editor’s Notes with Darci I will spare you all my Editor’s Notes for this issue, take it away Darci Shout Outs from the 2019 National and Western
It was an honor to host the 2019 PHCA National and Western in beautiful Colorado! First, I would like to thank my hard-working committee, who helped me regardless of where I was in the world and kept me on-track: Bill Martin designed both the National and Western logos – gorgeous watercolor art of our red dogs; Cynthia Guinn (trophies, prizes, Café Press store setup and operations, the Wix Store setup, sanity checks, a kind & listening ear, and epic organization); Mary Severino (paying the bills, ensuring I had what I needed and providing helpful reminders); Robert Newman (what a guy – there for me at every turn, driving trophies to/from Colorado, packing his van daily with what we needed for ribbons, trophies, and prizes, schlepping things to hell and back, taking an entire day of his trip to organize everything, making sure I was ok, rescuing me with cash and iced tea after a long day at agility, and emceeing our banquet); Alvaro and Cynthia Pisoni (boots on the ground in Colorado, hotel choices after our chosen hotel cancelled on us, food choices for the banquet, hospitality events, planning meetings, giving me much-needed moral support and a lovely gift of wine and a wine chiller from Italy!); Robin Phinney (anything I asked her to do, she did – literally; drove trophies and prizes from the national last year, and some Western trophies – several trips; picked up water and food for various events; and so much more – plus thank you to her husband George Bednar who drove her all over AND rescued me by meeting my husband to pick up prizes and ribbons that arrived late… and delivering the agility records! George and Robin provided their extra vehicle to ensure people had a ride from the showgrounds to the hotel and fun events. Although a small committee, we were mighty!
Second, a HUGE thank you to all the attendees who helped us pull off this marathon of events. Completely unprompted, these wonderful people went above and beyond to help with anything that was needed. When I arrived on Tuesday to unload my first of 3 carloads, Greg Breitbach helped me unload. The second carload, Greg and Tabitha Perry were my saviors. The third, quite late at night, Robert was there to help. Then there are the phenomenal people who attended without dogs and were there to help organize ribbons, trophies, prizes, and haul things to/from vehicles: Cynthia Guinn (organization queen and bringer of calm in the storm, she directed and led setup of the massive trophy tables for the Western and National), Michelle Carillo (this woman, without asking, met me daily to help with items and dogs – what a lifesaver!! She also single-handedly helped me load all the auction/banquet stuff and setup for the auction), Jan Christman (easily took charge of lunches and kept our caterer on-track.) Shawna Swanson, Andrea Schokker, Philip McClesky, Craig Wilkerson, Vickie Bellito, and I’m sure I am missing some people – helped to setup the auction items (this was a last-minute scramble because Robin’s boy Copper was in group and Alvaro and his girl Chloe were in owner-handler group, so it was unexpected and thrown together at the last minute.)

ASFA trial in his ‘spare’ time), Cynthia Pisoni, Joey Vrooman, Jeff Lewis (our FaceBook live dude for conformation), Tori Beaman, Jerri Gates (clerk at the ASFA trial), Dominic Carota and Linda Witt (mentored judges and were so kind to people interested in Pharaoh Hounds – and thank you to Dom who helped me so much with everything from moral support to handling Cayman.)
The triathlon conformation match judges which had to be juggled at the last minute due to absences: Andrea Schokker, Jayme Jones, and Justin Dannenbring – thank you for being flexible and willing to judge our brave participants.
Third, the lure coursing events, and stunningly beautiful Western trophies -- a massive thank you to George Lovato and Phil Fullam (he doesn’t even have Pharaohs!) They drove the equipment from New Mexico (over 400 miles each way), setup and took down the field both days, Phil operated the lure for the ASFA trial and was chairman of the AKC trial, judged the ASFA trial, and ensured smooth and safe running for our red dogs… plus both George and Phil personally made the trophies for the Western. They also bought everyone a fabulous dinner at P.F. Changs on Thursday – thank you!
Fourth, the people who contacted me and helped from afar: Mariah Houser (got donations for the welcome bags, prizes and auction items), Gale Lovato (sent donations with George for auction items), Jodi Lewis (maker of the gorgeous quilt and several nice placemats for the Human Challenge participants), Sheila Hoffman (medallions, certificates and plaques for the 2019 awards), Linda Tetreault (basket for silent auction), Meredith Wille (sent donations, prizes, and trophies); Brian Klingenberg (sent silent auction items).
Fifth, the people without Pharaoh Hounds who tirelessly worked with me to ensure the events went off without a hitch: Deb Lewis, our agility secretary and coordinator of the all-breed agility event; Liz Blassio for renting her agility training facility and some equipment to us for our trial – the very first AKC specialty trial held at her facility; Derrell who rented us the remainder of the agility equipment and setup/tore-down the entire trial; Jean Pero (allowed us to join the working dog obedience and rally trial on Friday, got the judge and facility, and kept our costs very low); Tad Walden (our show chair and President of Evergreen Kennel Club, which hosted the all-breed shows – he personally setup our gorgeous and massive outdoor ring, contracted with all the judges, dealt with nonstop issues with the superintendent, and so much more); Frank Cassano (our AKC lure coursing judge, who was ring steward for the Western, and huntmaster for our ASFA trial); Justin Dannenbring (our sweepstakes judge at the Western, our ASFA lure coursing judge, our AKC lure operator, our fixer of projectors at the banquet, and so, so, so much more – he tirelessly was there to help setup the banquet, tear down the banquet, keep me sane, setup and tear down the field, and steward our National – moreover, he helped me clean out two hotel rooms after the event, and drove stuff to my home.)

Scent Work – at only 1-1/2 years old, it is the 4th largest sport with 79,000 entries to date. CGC – 21% growth rate after giving it a title. It now works into Trick Dog. Trick Dog – 25,000 titled dogs to date A downward trend in B-Matches. 4-6 Beginner Puppy – 28% are new to the sport with 80% going on to exhibit in conformation. NOHS – increase in interest with more and more competition There are 9 new clubs approved during a year’s period with 23 All-Breed Clubs dissolving. 71% of the Group Shows are held with All-Breed Shows 65% Specialty Shows are held with All-Breed Shows AKC Projects COMPLETED – Revised judge approval process Adjusted division boundaries New Specialty Clubs – changed requirements Based on Membership rather than on distance requirements Eliminate fun match requirement and cut sanctioning process in half Allow larger territories for less common breeds AB Even Analysis – modified definition of isolated areas to allow third show if criteria met. In the western states, it was discovered that there were 20+ weekends with no AB shows within 400 miles. There can be a third show for an All-Breed Club if there are no other shows held within 400 miles of that cluster. Third show must be held within 50 miles of the club’s territory. INITIATIVES- Improve event search Improve access to downloadable forms BOW - the 1 + 1 = 1 point rule. In the short time the rules has been in effect, absentees been cut in half and entries are up at least 4 per show. Dennis Sprung announced the recent passing of former delegates: Lou Auslander and Dr. Robert Smith. New Delegates were introduced. Minutes of the March Delegates meeting were approved as published. There is one new member club – Champlain Valley Kennel Club. Brandi Hunter, AKC Communications reported on Promoting our Brand. Social media of our brand has grown to 17 billion viewers over the years. We watched a video presented by Melissa Owen, Marketing. AKC Meet the Breeds
Our 11th annual AKC Meet The Breeds® event is headed back to the Javits Center in New York City in 2020 and we could not be more excited. This fun-filled, canine experience will take place over the course of two days, January 25th and 26th, 2020. The family-friendly, educational extravaganza gives
animal lovers the unique opportunity to meet and play with hundreds of adorable dogs while learning about responsible pet ownership and canine good citizenship. Once again, we have invited The International Cat Association® (TICA®) to join the festivities to give animal lovers the chance to not only meet and play with hundreds of quality dogs, they can also meet various breeds of pedigree cats as well. Attendees will be able to interact with almost 200 breeds of dogs and cats in elaborately decorated booths with elements from the breeds’ history creatively displayed as well as opportunities to learn from experts about each breed in attendance. There will also be numerous, fun demonstrations both days. We look forward to this the event every year. The interaction with dog lovers and educational opportunities allows us to highlight our purebred dogs, their legacies and their purpose.

Canine Health & Research Our commitment to canine health and research continues. This month, The American Kennel Club (AKC), AKC Canine Health Foundation (AKCCHF) and Theriogenology Foundation (TF) announced a three-year extension of the AKC/AKCCHF/TF Small Animal Theriogenology Residency Program for 2021-2023. The Small Animal Theriogenology Residency Program is a collaborative effort, started in 2014, to increase the number of trained practitioners in small companion animal theriogenology (reproductive health) and canine clinical genetics. Theriogenology is the branch of veterinary medicine concerned with reproduction, including the physiology and pathology of male and female reproductive systems, and the clinical practice of veterinary obstetrics, gynecology, and andrology. As part of this ongoing program, also announced are three U.S. veterinary colleges just selected through a competitive grant application process to receive theriogenology residency program funding in 2020: Colorado State University, The Ohio State University and University of Missouri. These 2020 residency programs will be supported through educational grants funded by the AKC and AKCCHF working with the TF.
Responsible Dog Ownership Days
And finally, as a reminder, there is still time to add a Responsible Dog Ownership Day (RDO) to your event as a special attraction. These events are a fun and easy way to teach people about purpose-bred dogs, their predictability and how they help and enhance our society. The PHCA Eastern Specialty Committee is pleased to announce our eleventh annual “Eastern Specialty Honors Award”. Originally established and funded by Dominic Carota and Dr. Stephen Sipperly, this honor has been a feature of the Eastern Specialty every year since 2009. The PHCA is pleased to continue the tradition by awarding the Eastern Specialty Honor to a PHCA member exemplifying an extraordinary commitment to the Pharaoh Hound Breed.
The Eastern Specialty Honors award may be awarded to any PHCA member in good standing, regardless of their location. Each PHCA member is entitled to one vote. The honoree will be determined by a majority vote of those members who respond to this nomination request. The award will be presented at the Eastern Specialty celebration dinner on Friday December 6th.

Treasurer’s Report for the PHCA Scribe 2019 – 2nd Quarter Report
Account Summary Accounts for 2018 have been reconciled. Balances at the close of the 2nd Quarter are as follows. Account Balances: 03/31/19 Account Balances: 06/30/19 Business Checking: $ 9,084.15 Business Checking: $ 8,547.17 Business Market Rate Savings: $14,408.00 Business Market Rate Savings: $14,409.08 Rescue Fund: $14,282.16 Rescue Fund: $14,285.73 Total Accounts Balances: $37,774.31 Total Accounts Balances: $37,241.98 PHCA Rescue Efforts: PHCA rescue has been unusually active this year. As noted in my last report, the PHCA was actively working to re-home two Pharaohs, a 6-year old and a 10-year old. Per Robert’s email update in June, both have been taken care of with homes in Texas and North Carolina. Expenses for these dogs were covered by PHCA funds. Last year’s re-homing of the senior Pharaoh, Romio, did not work out. Romio’s move from his Bainbridge Island, WA location to a new home was time critical. Expenses for this latest rescue were nearly $800, with last year’s care for him running nearly $1300. Rapidly rising expenses, this immediate need, along with a concurrent situation involving an Oregon-located Pharaoh, resulted an emergency request for donations posted by Robert Newman. This funding request resulted in $1,165.19 of donations to PHCA rescue in a one-week time period. Twenty-eight people, including members and nonmembers, from here and abroad, supported expeditious assistance and care for these dogs. Romio was successfully moved from Washington to another home in California thanks to the efforts of Robert, Kathleen Deiley and other caring individuals. Rescue needs arise when least expected and our dogs deserve immediate action and care. We cannot underestimate the importance of donations from caring individuals over the course of the year. Thank you to all who support the PHCA’s rescue efforts. Time is often critical as rescue arrangements unfold. With that, I have made it a priority to provide needed funds via quickly and directly to boarding kennels, vets and/or others as appropriate for our Pharaohs in need. I also quickly reimburse expenses that are directly incurred by individuals who are actively involved in the care and transport of these dogs. The Business Account Checking balance above reflects some monies that have been utilized in rescue efforts. I utilize the checking account for expeditious payment, track overall donations and expenses, resolving any differences at the end of the year

2019 Specialties Darcy Kunard, Cynthia Guinn and the 2019 National/Western Specialty team have been working hard on the upcoming events scheduled for September 4 – 8 in Greeley, Colorado. Expenses associated with event venues, trophies/awards/ribbons and general event fees have been paid. To date, sponsorship income has been good, covering the costs of trophies and awards. Additional income for the event is anticipated and is needed from entries, banquet ticket sales, raffle and auction proceeds, merchandise sales and other sources. Our National typically provides essential funding for the club over the course of the year and we are looking forward to this event being a financial success. Julie Gwin has scheduled the 2019 Eastern Specialty, December 5 – 8, at the Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania. Julie and her team staged a great Eastern in 2018. This year’s event should be just a fun and is tied into a strong December cluster at the popular Oaks complex. Membership Dues Reminder: The Board has approved a small increase this year that will be reflected in 2020 dues renewal notices. This increase will soften the impact of fees associated with PayPal, Square and QuickBooks payments. Dues will be as follows: Individual Membership: $30 (increase from $25) Household Membership: $40 (increase from $35) Club Membership: $40 (increase from $35) Membership income, along with income from our Specialty events, is essential to the financial health of the club. I hope that we can find ways to show value to our membership, increase overall communication with the membership in general and increase the number of appropriate new members. Beautifully sculptured, coursing Pharaoh Hound, created by artist, Leslie Hutto. Hare Today, took the honor of winning the Alfrieda Montana Memorial Award for sculpture. At the Hudson Valley Art Association’s 86th Annual National Juried show. I cannot think of a more deserving coursing Pharaoh to have been Ms. Hutto’s model for this piece, than the Region 9, Multi Best in Field, Violet. I did have the honor of watching Violet course many times over her running career and Ms. Hutto has certainly captured Violet’s spirt.

A huge thank you to Darci Kunard for leading the charge on what is a huge undertaking. The time, commitment and planning an event like this takes is overwhelming and she was a force of nature.
Special thanks to Michelle Carrillo and Janet Saga-Christman for your tireless support and help throughout the entire weekend - the two of you exemplify what being a MEMBER of a group means.
Thanks to Dominic Palleschi Carota and Alvaro Pisoni (Cynthia Purrazzo Pisoni) who, along with me threw both pride and caution to the wind, bared our souls - and chests - all for the benefit of the PHCA. I will never let either of you forget that I kicked both of your asses and won the Human Challenge.
Thanks to Tabitha Perry and Robin (I never met a conversation I couldn’t interrupt) Phinney. Robin Phinney for helping me with Walker’s first trip into the Rally ring.
Tabitha showed what sportsmanship is all about when, after realizing I did not have the correct gear for Walker to go into the ring, immediate hooked me up with what I needed on the spot.
To my fellow Triathlon competitors: I salute your combination of competitiveness, audacity, and gall in signing up, participating, and showing fellow PHCA members what our dogs can do. Bravo! I’m sure I speak for all when I say it was awesome to see the oldest canine Triathlon competitor entered take home the win. Tabitha Perry’s Sabia showed us all that you can’t count the old (er) girl out.
To Jodi Lewis for - once again - dedicating countless hours creating a beautiful quilt that went home with this year’s Triathlon winner. We missed you and are sending positive vibes for your daughter and a quick and total recovery.
George Lovato Jr. and Phil Fullam deserve kudos for making lure coursing this year possible and for some truly amazing trophies.
Wow...Justin Dannenbring - Sweepstakes Judge, Lure Coursing Judge, Lure Operator, Director of Tech Services, and all-around Pharaoh Hound friend - is there anything this guy CAN'T do ?
It was wonderful to be able to present certificates and plaques and acknowledgement to those who have achieved so much this year with their canine companions - your dedication to your dogs is inspiring.

Congratulations to both Joyce Martin and Rita Laventhall Sacks - our two recipients of this years Pharaoh Hound Club of America Legacy Awards. There are none more deserving and our breed would not be where it is today without their contributions.

As a public service announcement, I do not recommend making the CA to CO 17 hour drive in one day, as I did both going and returning - but it does allow for some amazing sunrises and sunsets.
Finally, the PHCA Board of Directors was proud to announce that the PHCA Rescue Fund will now be known as the Pharaoh Hound Club of America Pam Haig Memorial Rescue Fund. I know she would be thrilled with this news, as rescue was where her heart beat the strongest.
The first donation into the fund was made by none other than Dr. Thom Haig, who has recently retired from the full time practice of veterinary medicine, and who mad an incredibly generous donation of $10,000.00. Now THAT'S a donation !
