Thematic Research Field: ADVANCED DESIGN AND TESTING OF VEHICLE COMPONENTS

Monthly net income of PhDscholarship (max 36 months)

€ 1325.0In case of a change of the welfare rates during the three-year period, the amount could be modified.

Context of the research activity

Motivation and objectives of the researchin this field

The growing demand for reducing CO2 emissions hasmade major automotive OEMs to invest significantly intothe electrification and to further optimize their vehicles interm of mass reduction i.e. lightweight design. Low-emission electric vehicles are crucial to locking in thebenefits of enhanced mobility, and consumers areswitching from internal-combustion engines to cleanerbattery power at an accelerating pace. Hydrogen vehiclesshare with battery electric the powertrain.Advanceddesign and testing methods are required for developingnew integrated components.

Methods and techniques that will bedeveloped and used to carry out theresearch

There is a consistent increase in the demand foradvanced systems in automobiles both for production andmotorsport. New or enhanced products (enabled bymachine learning) will have a large impact in theautomotive industry. A multidisciplinary approach isneeded. Driving simulators are crucial during thedevelopment and testing of new components and sub-systems. The simulator results help engineers in makingimportant decisions before building the prototype andtesting the vehicle on the track.

Educational objectivesThe Ph.D. candidate will be trained on advanced methodsfor the design and testing of vehicle subsystems. He willbe able to deal with complex design problems, define

Interdisciplinary PhD GrantThe PhD research will be carried out in collaboration withresearch groups of the PhD programme in"INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY".See http://www.dottorato.polimi.it/index.php?id=242&L=1for further information.

Traditional approaches to maintenance showed severelimitations in applicability to very different fleets andservice conditions. To circumvent these limitationspredictive maintenance is the solutions, but it implies adigitalization of the railway vehicles and theinfracstructure. The aim of this research is to investigatenew methods of predictive maintenance for railwaywhhels combining data from different sources togetherwith a study of damage phenomena to better describe thedegradation of railway wheels as the competiton ofdifferent effects (RCF, wear) under different serviceconditions.

Methods and techniques that will bedeveloped and used to carry out theresearch

The methods and techniques for this ambitious objectivewill be: 1) image analysis applied to sets of images takenby the maintenance personnel with techniques of machinelearning to obtain a ¿damage classification¿; 2)development of models for the two competing phenomean

of RCf and wear with a series of dedicated experiments;3) integration of degradation models with data about thetrain service to predict the development of a givendetected damage.

Educational objectives

The educational objective is to develop a new area ofinteraction of different disciplines that could provide thePhD student new skills to be applied to the solution of acomplex problem. The educational objective is to developa new area of interaction of different disciplines that couldprovide the PhD student new skills to be applied to thesolution of a complex problem. The objectives also requireflexibility and ability to combine different techniquesranging from data analysis to detailed structural analysis. The courses that will be offered are intended to providethe students the tools for this research activity. Theactivity will have the support of the new master course ofMobility Engineering as well as the support by LucchiniRSto deal with real measurements and experimental data.

Thematic Research Field: RAILWAY NOISE

Monthly net income of PhDscholarship (max 36 months)

€ 1325.0In case of a change of the welfare rates during the three-year period, the amount could be modified.

Context of the research activity

Motivation and objectives of the researchin this field

According to the Regional Office for Europe of the WorldHealth Organization, environmental noise is an importantpublic health issue, featuring among the topenvironmental risks to health. Railway noise is one of thedominant sources and, because of the growing mobilitydemand and of the increasing importance of railtransportation, mitigating its environmental impact isgetting more and more important. Consequently, EU andnational/local regulations are imposing strict limitations tothe acceptable noise levels. In this context, the researchchallenge is that of integrating numerical modellingstrategies at different levels, to provide comprehensiveknowledge of the physical phenomena and to support thedevelopment of effective noise mitigation solutions.

Methods and techniques that will bedeveloped and used to carry out theresearch

The PhD candidate will be dealing with both theoreticaland numerical modelling, will be involved in experimentalactivities (in lab and/or on track) and will get familiar withengineering problems of great industrial relevance.He/she will be asked to develop specific models and tocombine them with pre-existing simulation tools, so as tointegrate different modelling levels (rail vehicle dynamics,wheel/rail contact, train-track interaction, structuraldynamics and wave propagation). The Phd candidate willhave the opportunity of working in a team where previousknowledge and experience will be shared. He/she will be

1 / 3

asked to focus on one (or more) technical issues relatedto railway noise, such as rolling noise, curve squeal orground-borne vibration.

Educational objectives

The PhD candidate will be working in one of the mostchallenging research fields of noise and vibrationengineering. He/she will become an expert in advancedmodelling approaches and experimental techniques. Thecandidate is supposed to provide original contributions tothe development and experimental validation of railwaynoise simulation tools. The relationships established withinternational experts in this field will enable the candidateto develop the capability to cooperate within aninternational high level research team.

Job opportunities

Future job opportunities are primarily in the railwayengineering field, including railway industry, engineeringand project management companies, operators andinfrastructure managers. In a more general way, thecompetence acquired will indisputably be of interest forR&D departments of companies dealing with noise andvibration issues also in other industrial sectors(automotive, aerospace, appliances, etc.). Besides this, job opportunities will be with national and internationalacademic and non-academic institutions andorganizations, engaged in innovation, research andtechnical development. Our last survey on MeccPhDDoctorates highlighted a 100% employment rate withinthe first year and a 35% higher salary, compared toMaster of Science holders in the same field.
