Position Description
The internationally recognized Bloorview Research Institute is dedicated to improving the
lives of children with disabilities through client and family-centred rehabilitation research.
The Bloorview Research Institute is housed in Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital,
Canada’s largest pediatric rehabilitation and continuing care teaching hospital, which is fully
affiliated with the University of Toronto.
We have an opportunity for a dynamic PhD student to join our Concussion Centre team
under the supervision of Dr. Nick Reed:

You will join the project team for ‘Concussion & You: A peer-led approach to raising
concussion awareness in Canadian high schools’. Funding for this project is provided by the
Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR). This project focuses on the implementation
and evaluation of a national peer to peer concussion awareness campaign. The outcomes of
this project will be (1) sharing concussion knowledge, raising awareness and improving
concussion reporting behaviours amongst Canadian high schools; (2) exploring the impact
of a peer-led service learning approach.
This is an outstanding opportunity to understand how to best raise concussion awareness
and improve concussion reporting behaviours in high school students and provide a
foundation for a much needed national strategy. In collaboration with the project staff and
team, you will lead projects related to understanding school-wide concussion knowledge,
attitudes and intended practices, as well as lead projects related to understanding student’s
experiences. You will help formulate and execute all phases of the research process,
including protocol development, ethics applications, data collection, data analysis, and
knowledge translation. You will provide a key leadership role in this innovative innitative.
Start Date: Student would be expected to start September 2017.
Duties:
Fufill all degree requirments of the Rehabilitation Sciences Institute at the University
of Toronto (http://www.gdrs.utoronto.ca/doctor-philosophy-phd)
Work with external partners to identify target schools programs and provide project
management related to national concussion campaigns
Conduct qualitative interviews and focus groups with students, teachers and health
care professionals
Develop quantitative survey tools, collect and analyze data
Collaborate with research staff and project team to meet project targets and
objectives
Deliver presentations to internal as well as, external groups

Required Qualifications:
Minimum of a masters degree in relevant field (Rehabilitation sciences, Public Health,
Kinesiology etc.)
Experience and confidence with both qualitative and quantitative research methods
Previous experience working with youth and engaging the community
Broad understanding of pediatric concussion and knowledge translation principles
Experience working with SPSS(specifically with large data sets) and NVIVO software
would be an asset
Ability to think logically and work independently
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Flexibility to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
Strong communication skills and comfort speaking to and working with relevant
stakeholder groups
