“Let’s meet Filipino PURENESS!”
Staying in Seoul quite long, I went to ‘Hyehwa-dong’ where Daehackro is located. Daehackro is a
‘universities road’ populated by universities and art centers. Parades are frequently held at the area, also
where the famous ’Maronie Park’ is also positioned. Last Sunday, the breadth was mustered with people due
to a cordial weather.
It seems that there are several hot spots available for all ages to relax. Before, youngsters were
frequent at ‘Jongro’ and ‘Shinchon’ but now ‘Kangnamyeok’ Crossroads and ‘Apgujeong Rodeo’ Street are
rising on the line of places where young generations gather. A club street in ‘Hongdae’ and a cafe’ street in
‘Cheongdam’ became a favorite for the young generation nowadays. The whole area of Hyehwa-dong called
Daehackro was definitely a great rendezvous to unwind for young generations’ way back.
By the way, there’s a new scene on the rise. If you ever go to Hyehwa-dong, you will notice an
unfamiliar street around 500 meters. Every Sunday, this area will turn to ‘Filipino Street’. Many Filipinos
gather in the area. There are a lot of items that remind me of my stay in the Philippines.
From phone cards, snacks, and frozen fishes to groceries, all these stuffs came from the Philippines.
The languages used by them made me feel cozy. They speak Filipino, English, Tagalog and even Cebuano. It
made me feel like I was in a Philippine market! I’ve been living in the Philippines for quite some time now and
the place gave me the sense of familiarity and warmth. What more for Filipinos who came to the place?
While at the place, the thought of the American army and the Vietnam War came to mind. It may have
been the United States’ first defeat but one good thing resulted from the event. Also, travelers all over the
world who have been to Thailand have one unforgettable thing from their visit to the country. Can you guess
what the most memorable thing that foreigners remember from their stay in Vietnam and Thailand, far more
meaningful than the experience of travel is? The answer is ‘rice noodle’. Rice noodle became a trend in the
USA right after the war as much as rice noodle chains are popular in Korea. Noodles may look simple but it
has more to offer beyond the bounds of food and satiety.
Phil So Good magazine would like to exist like a rice noodle-transcending politics and economy. Just
like the unique and addictive character of Thai and Vietnamese noodles, it will always be remembered even if
it has been forgotten for a while.
Philippines and Filipinos are like rice noodles to Koreans. Even if they are a people from another
country with different physical characteristics, history, language and culture, they give us the feeling of
familiarity. Maybe this is because of their ‘pure mind’.
To Phil So Good readers who want to reclaim the feeling of ‘pureness’, I highly recommend you to
‘Hyehwa-dong Filipino Street’. It’s like experiencing a small Philippines and the warmth and pureness of the
Filipinos. Of course, if you can visit the Philippines again, then that would be the best idea.
