11. 2016 Chair's report: Please provide a narrative of thepast year's activity/successes/challenges:*

The section had 9 section meetings and 10 board ofdirector meetings. For the January meeting, the ACSPhiladelphia section award was presented to DonnaHuryn, University of Pennsylvania. This was for the 2015award, but because of scheduling conflicts for thespeaker, the presentation of the award was made inJanuary. Held at the University of Pennsylvania, the awardpresentation was followed by a lecture by Donna Hurynand a celebration dinner. The February section event washeld at the University of the Sciences and was followed bythe YCC's graduate poster session and competition.Several of the board members served as judges for theevent. The Edgar Fahs Smith lecture was given by Prof.George Schatz, held at the University of Pennsylvania. Inmid March, 230 certificates were sent to high schools withthe section. The certificates were for presentation to thetop high school seniors in chemistry. In April, wecelebrated the Scholastic Achievements of the top seniorsfrom our 28 colleges and universities. Held at McCall's,Joe Martino (chair of Career services) gave at lectureentitled "What the ACS can do for you, an introduction toCareer Services". In May, the section presented twoawards, the award for Excellence in Pre-College teachingand Excellence in Undergraduate teaching. The event washeld at the University of the Sciences. After thepresentation of the awards, an entertaining seminar wasgiven by Prof. Charlie Bamforth, Endowed Professor ofMalting and Brewing Sciences, Food Science andTechnology, UC Davis. Over 60 people attended theevent and dinner. As the event was held at the Universityof the Sciences, the department’s new UndergraduateBrewers Science faculty and students took part in theevent as well as the advisors to the program fromYuengling brewery. As we closed May, the sectionsadministrative assistant resigned her position to pursueother opportunities. As the section was challenged withhaving to fund an ad min at 20 h/wk and fund it’s mainactivities, the board proposed alternatives for having amore flexible approach for its business office. As well, are-examination of the task of the business office offered anopportunity to streamline functions such that a 20 h/wkwas not needed. The board of directors approved sharingan ad min from the University of Pennsylvania on an asneeded basis. This allowed the section to pay Penn for admin services under an SOW and has resulted in asignificant cost savings to the section. The process waskicked off at a face to face meeting of the board ofdirectors in May and was completed at the June board ofdirectors meeting. The new ad min was on-boarded inJuly. In the The June event, held a the Chemical HeritageFoundation celebrated our 50 and 60 year members, complete with lunch and a guided tour of the CHFmuseum. For most of the spring and summer, severalboard members and volunteers planned for the localsection’s participation in the ACS National meeting inPhiladelphia. The committee was led by Anne DeMasi. Two key volunteers helping Anne, were Deb Cook andKathy Shaginaw. As the section held many events at theACS National meetings, in Sept, the board met but nosection event was held. In September, the section officemailed several copies of the Career Navigator brochure toeach of the chemistry department chairs of the collegesand universities within the section. Several departmentchairs requested additional copies which weresubsequently delivered. In October, the 2016 PhiladelphiaSection Award was presented to Professor AnthonyAddison, Drexel University. The award presentation, lecture by Prof Addison and dinner were all held at Drexel.Over 70 people attended the event. Also in October, theexecutive committee met to have prebudget discussion. In November, the section held the Ullyot lecture at theChemical Heritage Foundation, The section was trulyfortunate to have the 2017 Novel Laureate in Chemistry,Sir James Fraser Stoddard give the Ullyot lecture. Theevent, which is free and open to the public, was quicklybooked! The capacity crowd of nearly 200 was treated toa beautifully detailed and thought provoking lecture byProfessor Stoddard. The award presentation and lecturewas followed by an open reception and then by a smallerdinner with members and benefactors. Decemberwrapped up the year with our holiday dinner and budgetplanning session.

a. Please list your top 3 goals: Increase participation of members at Section events andin Section committees and activities.

Revitalize Communications Committee and encourageuse of social media and other electronic media.

Execute programming to encourage participation ofmembership and integrate committee activities.

b. What are your concerns and challenges?* Philadelphia Section is extremely diverse in geographyand demographics. Our memberrship has signiicantlydecreased over the past 10 years due to changes inindustry as well as membershiip demographics. Providingfor the needs of this diverse audience presents manychallenges.

Although there is a dedicated core membershipcontingent, engaging new and less active members ihasbeen challenging. One bright spot is our very active YCCprgramming. Transitioning these active members into thegovernance and activities of the Section is a challengethat should be embraced.

The Section's main vehicles for communication have beenthe "Catalyst", our monthly newsletter and our website. The "Catalyst", now published electronically, was firstpublished in February 1916. However, in this time of rapidnews cycles and social media, we need to come into the21st century and up our game. Enlisting the help of ouryounger members and expanding the CommunicationsCommittee to include social and electronic mediaresources iwill be a major focus.

13. 2017 Chair-Elect's goals for the Section

a. Please list your top 3 goals: Increase/expand collaborations with local scientificcommunity/nearby professional organizations.

Improve visibility/membership interaction by enhancinginvolvement on social media(FB)& elec commun

Increase membership/member involvement by engaging inmore outreach activities with the community

b. What are your concerns and challenges?* 1) The Philadelphia local section does not have astrong individual voice. We have not developed a section-specific mission and vision which may provide focus onthe long term and short term goals.

2) The Philadelphia section of the American ChemicalSociety lacks a strong presence in social media and hasjust begun to refocus towards the recruitment andcontinued involvement of younger members.

3) A continuing challenge is in maintaining andincreasing the local section membership.

4) Although we do outreach programs to educate thepublic and support future chemists, we have theopportunity to expand our efforts with a focus oninteracting with the adult members of the community.Finding programs that engage and energize those withnon-scientific backgrounds can be more challenging.

Barbara Hillery:The Philadelphia Local Section is a very active section which includes 5 subsections hosting 40subsection meetings as well as 25 topical group meetings. While the report states there were just 2 executivecommittee meetings, I suspect this is in part a result of nomenclature uncertainties. The section has listed as many as14 executive meetings in the recent past, and in 2016 states there were 10 Board of Directors meetings. The sectioncontinued their regular annual sequence of award ceremonies, outreach to and recognition of top chemistry high schooland undergraduate seniors, and ongoing meetings for the membership. There is clearly a lot going on, and the sectionis to be congratulated.

Even highly successful sections encounter difficulties, and Philadelphia last year ran into problems with their businessaffairs when their part-time administrative assistant left for another position. I think this is the first time I’ve seen asection report this difficulty, and it is one that is most likely to occur in a large and active section where admin supportbecomes so important. The section was able to use the opportunity to reassess their need and found a partnershipsolution that continues to provide support while decreasing expenses. The other challenge noted by the section is theoft-repeated one of engaging new volunteers. This remains a challenge for every section, large and small.Philadelphia has encountered some success with a Younger Chemist Committee, and has plans for leveraging theexpertise of the YCC to enhance communication within the section through increased use of social media.

What were the greatest successes of thisevent?

We have achieved our original aim: to replicate the highlysuccessfulBoston Regional Inorganic Colloquium in the Philadelphia area. Thus farwe have had excellentattendance, a diverse list of speakers, and high participation fromstudents in the region.

Lessons Learned/Suggestions to improvethis event

To enhance the scientific discussion at the events andfurther improve networking opportunities for attending students, futureevents will work to broadcast thecolloquium announcements to an even wider audience from outside theacademic enterprise (includingindustrial, civil and governmental employees).
