Sunday Service 10 a.m. Sunday School begins at 10 a.m.

Dear Friends,

On Easter morning we often read this account from the Gospel according to John chapter

20 ‘Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to

the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to

Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to him, “They

have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”’

It is hard for us to imagine how bewildered and frightened the women must have been to

come and find an empty tomb. One author, Jeral Williams from The Upper Room writes,

“I have found that the empty tomb does not evoke the same passion as the cross. People

seem to have trouble relating to the empty tomb and experiencing the emotions that I’m

sure the women felt after their discovery on resurrection morning.

When I was a child we rolled and sought Easter eggs, yet I had not made the connection until

recently, that an egg could be a symbol for the stone that had been rolled away. President

and Mrs. Hayes were the first presidential couple to institute the Easter Egg Roll at the

White House. The Hayes were a very religious couple who regularly attended a Methodist

church, prayed twice daily and sang hymns each evening.

The Congregational Church of Phillipston has its own Easter Egg tradition which is to

hold a giant Easter breakfast from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with Ham, Eggs, Sausage, Hash

browns, Pancakes, and more food on Easter Saturday, April 19 at the Red Apple Farm.

The adult Egg hunt will have a grand technological prize. There will be multiple egg

hunts for children and a teenage egg hunt also. Hope to see you there on the 19th, and

also on Easter Sunday, April 20 at 10:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary and Easter sunrise at 275

Ward Hill Road, in Phillipston

Your sister In Christ,

Stephanie C. Flynn

The Historical Society of Phillipston invites you

to learn the story behind

"Plow Day" at the Hunt Farm

presented by George Hunt, Sr.

on Wednesday, April 30 at 7 P.M.

in the Congregational Church Vestry

An interesting step-back-in-time evening is in store for you. George Hunt will share the

nostalgic story about a special event that has taken place at his farm in Orange every spring

for the past 15 years. Farmers, tractor lovers, and anyone who likes a glimpse of the good

old days will enjoy meeting this delightful man and hearing the story about the men, women,

and children who congregate to plow his 100+ acre field with horses, oxen, and antique

tractors. Participants look forward to having the opportunity to use their old machinery and

meeting with other folks who share their interest ... and also visiting with the people who

gather to watch. Several Phillipston people are active in clubs for people who collect this

antique machinery. It will be a unique experience and the Historical Society always

welcomes guests. Refreshments will be served.

* This year "Plow Day" at the Hunt Farm will be on May 3rd, and you'll be sure to see all participants if you

attend in the morning.

North Quabbin Garden Club

Thursday, April 17, 2014, 7 p.m. Millers River Environmental Center, 100 Main Street, Athol, MA 01331

Eat From Your Garden Year Round! Diane Salcedo was a commercial vegetable and greenhouse grower in North Orange for 20

years until 1999. For the last twelve years she has grown a large vegetable garden which

provides her family with most of their vegetables throughout the year, fresh from May to

October, and frozen the rest of the year. This spring she plans to reopen a commercial

greenhouse, raising vegetable and herb seedlings to sell to local gardeners. She will talk

about how to plan a garden to provide fresh vegetables for the longest possible season.

An affiliate of the Millers River Environmental Center in Athol, the North Quabbin Garden

Club formed in 2006 to encourage interest in all phases of home gardening. With efforts to

promote better horticultural practices and foster civic beauty, emphasis is placed on use of

native plants, organic gardening, and the conservation of natural resources. Monthly

meetings are usually held on the third Thursday evening of each month featuring informative

speakers or workshop sessions. Members are currently working on a wildlife habitat garden

at the Millers River Environmental Center and planning their annual spring sale of perennial

plants and specialty items. Guests and new members are always welcome, so join us this

month and learn something new about gardening. Meetings are free to members and guests

are asked for a donation.

Cemetery Commission

The Cemetery Commission would like to thank Ed Conrad for his work on the Cemetery Commission over the past year. Ed was extremely helpful in maintaining the beauty of the grounds around the center of Phillipston and at the Cemeteries. It’s a big job to keep everything mowed and Ed stepped up and really helped out. It was a sad day in January when Ed Conrad gave his resignation. We hope Ed’s knee and leg will become better with some rest.

The Town of Phillipston is fortunate to have two candidates running to be on the Commission. Ronald Richard of 150 Baldwin Hill Road is running for the 3 year position and Paul Bauch of 150 Templeton Road is running for the 2year position. I look forward to working with them both.

Please come out and vote on May 5th and support all the Candidates that are running for Town Offices.

Garrett Foley – Cemetery Commissioner

Cub Scout Pack 39 News

The Annual Pinewood Derby was held on March 1st. Congratulations to the

winners: 1st Place Ryan Jacques, 2nd Place John Bennett, 3rd Place Andrew

LeBlanc, Modified Race Michael Jacques. The scouts all demonstrated good

sportsmanship while having a great time.

Our Blue and Gold Pack Meeting was held on March 15th. We were very

lucky to have a presentation from the Phillipston Police Department's Search

and Rescue Canine, Tessie, her handler Officer William Chapman and

Officer Ray Jackson. The scouts and parents learned a great deal about what

it takes to find lost people, and then had a map and compass lesson on how to

not get lost! Thank you Tessie! We would also like to publicly thank

Hannaford, Stop and Shop and Price Chopper who all donated gift cards

toward our banquet smorgasbord. Another successful event. Upcoming

events include a clean-up day project and the Memorial Day Parade.
