IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE

BOARD

Welcome

Your Board of Directors has been working overtime with the amazing team in the school to get ready for the 201617 year and I can tell you that many of us on the board wish we could come back to THIS school! The themes planned are out of this world and everybody is excited to get into the Creation Studio!

The challenges around funding are front and centre in everybody's minds in Alberta and we are committed to doing everything in our power to meet our vision of being accessible to everybody. We strive to ensure that economic factors are mitigated and we continue to deliver the amazing educational opportunities your children deserve!

Through our collaboration and sharing with other independent schools we have built a support network that is ensuring that education choice is supported in Alberta. Having the ability to choose the best education approach for our students is key to creating responsible, engaged and contributing citizens. This is how we create great communities!

You will see some new creative approaches to our programs as we evolve and grow what is the best education choice for your family. Supporting and empowering lifelong learners is critical to our community and society's future and your Board of Directors is committed setting the standard for other educational organizations.

Phoenix is a publicly accredited, nonprofit, secular, private Alberta school that specializes in personalized learning. We offer the following three program choices: 1) Kindergarten (475 hours of instruction, onsite and field trips), 2) SchoolDirected (created by a certificated teacher, follows the Alberta Programs of Study, requires regular contact and submissions) and 3) Home Education (Parentdesigned, directed but supervised by Phoenix) for students K12.

This form of education requires a significant commitment from parents. Students must have an engaged adult who is available daily to assist with instruction, transportation and coordination.

Further, we are not a designated special needs school.

Finally, we are a secular school and celebrate a variety of commercial holidays! We respect diversity and parents’ right to choice!

Our mission is to provide unique learning opportunities for families so that each young person may develop into a life-long learner and active responsible global citizen.

We offer hundreds of great classes each year. Classes are open to all families whether they are registered with Phoenix as their school authority or not. These classes should be considered resources, just like a book or CD, and may not cover all the Alberta Programs of Study Learning Outcomes in any one class.

Each educational program is customized to suit your child's specific needs, learning styles and the 21st century

environment!

WE ARE OPEN TO ALL!

STAYING SAFE @PHOENIX

Allergies Please note: We are not an allergenfree zone! If your student has a severe allergy, you are required to stay onsite and carry your student’s epipen at all times. If your student is older and you plan to drop them off, then they must be able to selfadminister! Also we ask that you remind instructors of your student’s allergies as many of our classes may include food items. We will try to let you know in advance what foods may be used but we ask you bring appropriate substitutes as required.

If there is a problem in a class . . . The instructor will make your student aware of the problem or issue and indicate what they should be doing differently. They will be given one additional warning.

After that, your assistance will be required. Your student may continue to participate in the class under your supervision if appropriate. If you are not onsite, you will be called and expected to return to the centre immediately to assist your student. (Remember to sign out if you go offsite!)

If the behavior issue continues, you will be asked to remove your student from the class. (Classes are not mandatory and we will not tolerate rude, disrespectful or unmanageable behavior.) If there is a persistent problem, your Learning Coach or the Principal will help you implement strategies to help correct the behavior. Once corrected, your student may attend classes again at that time if appropriate.

In the Event of a Fire or Emergency There are current fire extinguishers located throughout the building. Most rooms have at least one. We do not do schoolwide fire drills but rather our fire procedure is reviewed with students each and every class as students have a varied schedules and not everyone is here at the same time. Your student knows they are to stay with their instructor, follow them out to the muster point and to wait for you there where you will be required to sign your student out. Parents: If you are asked to leave the building in the event of a fire or emergency, please go quickly to the nearest exit. These are marked on maps throughout the building. Take the children who are in your direct supervision and go outside at the muster point. We will meet you there. Muster point: Is the big RED Phoenix sign. We will ask you to initial the class list to release your student into your care.

YOU ARE A PART OF OUR SAFETY PLAN! If you see a hazard, a stranger or are worried about something, please come and tell us

immediately!
