FOCUS AREAS PROGRAM COMPONENTS PARTNERS

Businesses From large corporations to small, local companies, private sector entities are engaged and contributing to multiple aspects of the program, but especially the career exposure component, where they hope to recruit more American Indian men to join their team.

Schools School districts and school staff identify young men that could benefit from the program and help design its curriculum.

Nonprofits Organizations beyond the Phoenix Indian Center assist in providing educational workshops and services to the young men as part of the program and help design the curriculum.

Government Agencies Public agencies such as the department of health, youth authority, and department of labor provide expertise and connections to services for young men in the community.

Healthy Lifestyle Choices as it relates to exercise, nutrition, and substance abuse.

Strengthen Family Relations between parents and children, siblings, and elders and youth

Decrease Negative Behaviors that lead to problems in school, at home and involvement in the criminal justice system.

Enhanced Cultural Connections that enable the young men to navigate the world successfully while maintaining their American Indian identity.

Increase Graduation Rates to levels equivalent to their meainstream peers.

School/Career Pathways that ensure more young men have the knowledge and tools necessary to pursue higher education and the career they want.

Communication Skills Ability to speak, write, and listen confidently in ways that lead to positive engagement at home, school, in the workforce, and in the greater community.

Career Exposure Providing opportunities to gain an insiders’ view of various employers, the positions they hire and the necessary education, preparation and skills needed through site visits and guest speakers.

Parent Engagement Convening parents of the young men on a monthly basis for educational sessions and service provision that improves home environment and relationship with children.

Mentorship Providing the young men with caring and successful adults as teachers and advisors in the program that offer guidance and role modeling on successfully navigating adversity at home, school, and work.

College Preparation Assisting and educating the students on fulfilling college requirements, completing admission applications, searching for scholarships, applying for financial aid and finding the right school for them.

Community Involvement Encouraging and presenting the young men with opportunities to give back to their communities through service and leadership in student and/or tribal governance.

Cultural Education Engaging American Indian young men to explore self identity through history, value systems, arts & crafts, as well as spiritual traditions.

Drug and Alcohol Education Providing education and referrals to services about substance abuse and its’ impact on the overall health of a human being.
