We are pleased to bring you the winter edition of the Maribyrnong News. As we move further into winter, things are heating up in Maribyrnong with so much happening in and around our community that you can get involved in.

Council recently adopted the 2016/17 Budget and I’m delighted to say that Council no longer has any borrowings and is now debt free as of the current financial year. The budget is full of deliverables that will bring visible and meaningful change to our City, with a ton of investment in capital works. New and improved facilities, more parks and gardens, inviting civic spaces – these are all important features that offer real lifestyle options and can make a difference to our City.

Even while keeping our finances as conservative as possible, we carried out a thorough upgrade of our Phoenix Youth Hub building in Footscray. Our young people came out in full force at the end of June to celebrate at our Phoenix re-opening event and we look forward to collaborating with them even more in the future.

Another huge celebration for our City at the end of June was the 10th birthday party for the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre, our MAC. We celebrated with a huge splash as more than 3,000 people came through our doors. Come and visit us if you haven’t been to MAC in a while to see our freshly renovated, state of the art health club.

The City of Maribyrnong has long been known as a destination of choice and that was certainly the case during the Southern Australia University Games in the first week of July as more than 2,000 student athletes descended upon Footscray. Proudly presented in partnership with Victoria University, the 20 competitions we hosted at our facilities and grounds brought the spirit of youth and friendly competition to our City.

We love our sport here in the City of Maribyrnong, and we also love the arts. The production team for the new drama series from Channel 10, The Wrong Girl, captured the charms of Yarraville and Seddon as the backdrop for their filming. Local resident and actor, Kevin Harrington. told me more about his love of the area and shooting on location here in our City – check out page seven for more.

Our online community engagement portal, Your City Your Voice, has so far featured nearly 40 Council projects for public consultation and we have had over 10,500 site visits from our community. Keep it coming - we love hearing your ideas for our City!

What could be more of a favourite in our City than T Cavallaro and Sons, the pastry shop on Hopkins Street? Tony’s shop has been part of the furniture in Footscray for decades and we wish them many more years as they celebrate their 60th birthday this year.

While Footscray retains its classic favourites that we hold so dear, there are plenty of changes at the same time. There’s a lot happening with our friends at Victoria University under our Footscray University Town partnership. Read more on page six about the new Footscray residence that VU students now call home.

REOPENED PHOENIX YOUTH HUB

We caught up with a young person who has been coming to Phoenix for a while now and has taken part in a range of programs, Melika Sanatkar. Here is what she had to say.

Tell us about your involvement with the Phoenix Youth Hub. Why did you first start coming here?

During the last school holiday program in March, I came and did a photography workshop and a theatre workshop that Phoenix put on. I heard about it at my school, Victoria University, where I am studying English. I enjoyed the workshops and there were so many different things to do. I thought it was a great thing. I like acting! In my country, Iran, I did some theatre acting at my school.

What are some of the things that you are doing now at Phoenix Youth Hub that you are really enjoying?

At the moment I am part of Phoenix Edge, the weekly theatre group on Wednesdays. I also did a fashion program and modelled at the fashion parade in June at the Phoenix Rising reopening event. I also did the street fashion photography workshop

with photographer Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore that Phoenix ran. I hadn’t done photography before and this was the first time I had used that kind of camera and taken professional photographs. I am also a member of the Arts and Events Programming Team. We meet on Thursdays and plan lots of interesting arts and other events. Anyone can join up.

How would you encourage young people to get involved in Phoenix programs?

I like that we can do things for free at Phoenix and it’s easy to find out what is happening here. I am new here, I have been in Australia for three years. If young people have some free time, they can come to Phoenix and enjoy it. It is fun.

FAMILY BUSINESS T CAVALLARO AND SONS HAS BEEN PART OF THE FABRIC OF FOOTSCRAY FOR 60 YEARS, SERVING UP BAKED GOODS SINCE THE 50’s – IN FACT THEY EVEN CATERED FOR THE MELBOURNE OLYMPICS IN 1956! NOT MANY CURRENT BUSINESSES CAN CLAIM THAT!

It all started with Tommaso Cavallaro who came to Australia from Italy in 1949 and started baking his delicious Italian sweets from his kitchen at home in Yarraville. In 1956, Tommaso and his wife Sarina opened their Pasticceria in Footscray. Camelo, the eldest of the five children, started to work with his father at the young age of 14 and is still working in the pasticceria to this day, along with his youngest brother Tony and their respective wives.

We had a chat to the brothers about their love for Footscray, passion for preserving their parent’s legacy and secret to their longevity.

Footscray is a suburb always on the move, and Council is truly proud of how it has evolved over the years. You must have seen a lot of things change during your time here… what are some of the changes you’ve noticed?

We are now seeing strong growth in Footscray, and rightfully so. The bio-diversity of the people that come through our shop and people we see walking up and down

our street is a lot different from 10 to 15 years ago. But in essence, Footscray hasn’t really changed - just the faces and places that they’ve come from.

Footscray features a fascinating blend of international cultures and delicious cuisines. What are some of your favourite local eateries?

Footscray now has a great range of places that we like to go and eat, from Jimmy Wong’s famous dim sims to Konjo for African food. Smoked meats down at Up in Smoke to burgers at 8bit. There’s too many to mention...

What is the secret to T Cavallaro’s longevity?

Our secret to longevity is simple. Our recipes have not changed since Tommaso started his fledgling business. Recipes originate from Lipari, Sicily dating back to Tommaso’s father in the late 19th century. We have always used fresh ingredients - we do not use premixes. We are also strictly a family business, which enables us to

maintain a high level of customer service backed by strong values and work ethic as well as that secret ingredient - passion. Tommaso and Sarina are and will always remain our inspiration.

What are your signature sweet dishes?

Our signature sweet is our cannoli, which like all of our products, is made using a 100 year old recipe. Our other popular sweet is our pastine di mandola and our amaretti, which are all handmade and gluten free and also our traditional continental cakes.

What are your favourite things about Footscray? Can you see T Cavallaro and Sons still being here in another 60 years? (We certainly hope so!)

We love the different cultures that are here and we’re not that far from Melbourne’s CBD, which makes it a little bit easier for us to go and support our local football team the Bulldogs! And yes - we hope our children will still be here working in the shop in another 60 years.

Footscray University Town (FUT) is a joint initiative between Council and Victoria University (VU). FUT focusses on continuing the revitalisation of Footscray and delivering long lasting benefits to residents, businesses and VU students and staff. Through FUT, Footscray is positioned as a university town that will open opportunities for employment, business and investment. In line with creating better connections between key destinations throughout Footscray, the FUT project was proud to launch new student accommodation near VU earlier this year, called UniLiodge @ VU. Encouraging students to immerse themselves in local Footscray life, while living in close proximity to the university, has resulted in many Australian and international students calling this new development home.

The UniLodge @ VU is a new 12 storey apartment complex across the road from the Footscray Park campus with options of studio, 2 bedroom and 6 bedroom apartments to rent. Students have access to study rooms, outdoor leisure spaces, an on-site café and a theatre, not to mention all the amenities on offer at campus.

Little Saigon open for businessFootscray is definitely a suburb on the move! You may have noticed some construction going on as we work to improve the area with new retail spaces, a plaza and the Saigon Welcome Arch. But rest assured, it’s business as usual in the Little Saigon precinct. While there may be a few changes to traffic movement in the area, all your favourite businesses on Leeds, Hopkins and Byron Streets are open for business! Little Saigon Market provides an energising Asian goods shopping experience seven days a week, offering a huge range of well priced produce, fresh meat and fish.

Keep your shopping local as we make an even better Footscray.

One of the biggest fans of the UniLodge @ VU is its first ever resident, Kyle, who moved in on 1 February 2016 and hasn’t looked back since. Here’s what Kyle had to say in his speech at the grand opening, about his love for Melbourne, and for his new neighbourhood of Footscray.

“ A wonderful place for making friends and building that new life.”

I have come from Sydney knowing very few people in Melbourne so I was pretty much coming here alone. UniLodge has been a wonderful place for making friends and building that new life that I really wanted to have leaving home and coming here. I have met five of the best friends I will ever have here in my shared room.

“I could not be happier with the way that this has gone.”

I came to Melbourne for the first time on the Victoria University Open Day last year and I was just taken aback by the design of the display apartments they had here. I sat down on the couch and I applied right there and then. I wasn’t even going to think about it. I just knew that when I saw this place, I wanted to be here because this was going to be my home and it’s a wonderful place. I was the first person to arrive at UniLodge @ VU, to put my name down, and I just could not be happier with the way that this has gone.

“I’m really proud to be a part of the new benchmark for Footscray’s development.”

The staff have been so helpful and I just really feel at home here. I just want everyone to be able to experience that.

Come and see how wonderful this place is, it’s an absolutely beautiful building and it’s just stunning. You will see the view of the city and you will think to yourself, wow this is a home and it will be a home for so many people over the years. We are the people who are going to set the traditions for this place, we are going to make the memories and set in stone the things that are going to come over 10, 20, 30, 50, 100 years in the future.

I’m really proud to be a part of the new benchmark for Footscray’s development. I think it’s wonderful to put so much into such an amazing area with so much character. It’s a really beautiful place to be and I’m just amazed constantly and every day I look out that window and think to myself, I am so happy I made this decision. It’s wonderful and I’m really proud to be a part of it.

Q: Did you always want to be an actor? Did you dream of being in this line of work as a little boy growing up? Or were there other jobs you dreamed of doing as an adult?

A: As a boy growing up I dreamed of being a Footscray footballer. And I’m secretly hanging on to the dream as we speak. I became interested in performing when I was a student at St John’s College Braybrook, now Chisholm College. We had no drama classes. I was something of a class clown.

Q: Every year there are more and more people coming to our dynamic city to live, work and play. We understand that you are a local here in the City of Maribyrnong. Tell us what charms you about your neighbourhood? What drew you to the inner west and what keeps you here year after year?

A: I have a cafe ‘The Butchers’ 200 metres from my house, two large parks and the Stony Creek Reserve. I love the Sun Theatre, the Yarraville, Seddon and

Williamstown cafes and restaurants. And if I don’t know someone from around here, I reckon I know their best mate.

Q: Filming in your community of Seddon and Yarraville must have been a fantastic experience for you. Did you play tour guide to the cast and crew by taking them to all your favourite cafes and shops around here? Any recommendations for our residents on local cafes and other neighbourhood hot spots?

A: I was only in the show for eight days so didn’t get to play tour guide as such. But I must say it was a highlight being able to walk to our first location from my place in two minutes. It was also great to be based at the Yarraville Club where I hosted the Seddon Community Bank’s Community Pitch night recently and to play kick to kick with my “son” Ian Meadows at Yarraville Gardens where I have hosted the Christmas Carols for a number of years, often with another local, William McInnes.

Q: Our city is a dynamic one with a thriving arts scene. Maribyrnong is really changing and developing, while retaining its strong sense of rich history and multiculturalism that we certainly take pride in. What changes have you seen take place in the area?

A: When I first encountered the Footscray Community Arts Centre, it was to rehearse a local amateur play. We used the basement. There were still puddles everywhere and to be frank it was more like a piggery (its original purpose) than the beautiful little theatre in the same location today. (I’ve performed there since as well.) Williamstown, Seddon and Yarraville are all places for gourmet visitors now and the Maribyrnong River is no longer something the city turns its back on. I work in Werribee now where my wife and I own the business Quest Apartments, Werribee. It’s great to be a part of the re-invention and transformation of the area. This general area is the fastest growing in Australia and I’m proud to be a Westie.

KEVIN HARRINGTON STARS IN LOCALLY FILMED TV SERIES

‘The Wrong Girl’ The City of Maribyrnong has provided the backdrop for Channel Ten’s new drama entitled 'The Wrong Girl', going to air later this year. Filming in Yarraville and Seddon over the last few months, the contemporary drama series stars the likes of Aussie actors Jessica Marais and Craig McLachlan.

Yarraville and Seddon local and cast member of 'The Wrong Girl', Kevin Harrington, tells us about this childhood dreams and why he loves his neighbourhood.

PARKS AND GARDENS ARE A KEY PART OF OUR CITY AND COUNCIL IS COMMITTED TO MAINTAINING AND IMPROVING THESE AREAS AS WELL AS PROVIDING NEW OPEN SPACES FOR THE COMMUNITY TO ENJOY.Here are some of the highlights of the work we are currently undertaking:

NEW

Cowper Street, Footscray

Opened in June, this new play space is an innovative step for Maribyrnong in creating new open space, with the central median widened to create the new park, which features a picnic setting and play equipment.

Fyan Morven Park, Yarraville

Opened in April, this new park at the end of Fyan and Morven Streets features a

playground, seating and picnic area, new garden beds and trees.

Skinner Reserve, Braybrook

Due to a fire at the much-loved ‘aeroplane park’ in December 2016, Council has been working closely with the local community to re-imagine the new playground, which will retain the theme of flight. Construction is due to commence in early 2017.

IMPROVED

Coulson Gardens, Maribyrnong

This park is currently undergoing a face-lift, which includes a playground upgrade, an enlarged BBQ and picnic area with shelter, new paths and garden improvements. Works are due for completion in August 2016.

Johnson Reserve, West Footscray

Following an extensive community consultation, Council has finalised the concept plans for this popular Reserve, which include additions to the playground area, a scooter/trike track, and new picnic shelter and barbecue. Work will start later this year.

Scovell Reserve, Maidstone

The popular park is set to receive a new picnic shelter with BBQ facilities, an expanded playground, a scooter/trike track

and tree planting. Following consultation with the local community, works are scheduled to take place early next year.

Costello Reserve, Maidstone

An upgrade has been proposed for this lovely Reserve, which includes a new playground and scooter track; a new picnic setting and seats; and tree and garden planting. Feedback has been sought on the proposed improvement plan, with works scheduled for later in the year.

MacDonald A Reserve, West Footscray

This small park in Lae Street is set for a major makeover in the coming months, with the site extended to Waratah Road to connect it with the Stony Creek trail. An expanded playground will provide a greater range of play equipment and there will also be a new drinking fountain, extra seating and picnic facilities, new garden beds and trees.

F5 FOOTSCRAY IN TRANSITION –

TEN ICONIC SITES IN FOOTSCRAY WERE FEATURED IN THE F5 FOOTSCRAY IN TRANSITION ART PROJECT. COUNCIL PROUDLY CELEBRATED THE COMPLETION OF THE FIVE YEAR PROJECT IN JUNE 2016.

The F5 project and the concept behind it is truly an innovation in art. Council has commissioned an artist every year from 2011 to 2016 to artistically interpret and document ten iconic sites in Footscray through photographic and video art.

These iconic sites are well known to all of us who live, work, visit and study in Footscray. Some of the sites have changed quite a bit over five years with a changing skyline and revitalised infrastructure. Other sites have stayed wonderfully as they are – mementos to a Footscray past.

And as we all know, Footscray is an evolving suburb, in the midst of so much change.

This urban transition is being driven by Council, by the State Government, by local traders and business and by our community. After all, Footscray belongs to all of us.

Amongst so much change, Council saw the importance and the value in capturing this

evolution in a creative and meaningful way. The project has also reinforced the message that Footscray is a centre of creativity, education and urban development.

2016 being the final year of the project, we are well and truly going out with a bang. This year’s commissioned artist is Kip Scott, a Yarraville based photographic and video artist.

Kip has presented a series of dramatic interpretations of the ten sites using a range of camera angles and creative lighting effects, shooting the entire series at dawn and dusk.

As so much has changed in Footscray through the last five years, Kip’s stunning contribution has added a valuable, visually impressive and up-to-date snapshot in time of Footscray.

We caught up with Kip and here is what he had to say about his F5 experience.

Q: You were commissioned by Council as the final F5 Footscray in Transition photographic artist. What attracted you to be a part of this project? Was there something about documenting Footscray specifically that pulled you in?

A: My interest in photography was first fostered at Footscray City Secondary College. I had my photographic collage of an abandoned industrial site exhibited at NGV, Federation Square for VCE Top Arts, and was accepted into RMIT’s Bachelor of Arts (Photography). I now work as a freelance commercial photographer, while also pursuing my own artistic practice. My own photographic work has often focussed on the West, and communities and architecture in a state of change throughout the world.

Q: Tell us about your artistic work for this project. What kind of photographic art of the ten sites in Footscray did you produce as part of your collection of work?

A: As a photographer I have sought to capture Footscray’s key sites at this moment in time, to convey their beauty and atmosphere with my own style, utilising

light and different angles. And to both acknowledge the past, and to embrace the future. As an admirer of the works of Bill Henson and Gregory Crewdson, I made an early decision to capture Footscray at dusk or dawn. In such light, Footscray seemed to be in that strange time between day and night or sleep and waking, but always expectant of people and life.

The rooftop of Footscray Market gives one an overview of the Footscray Hotel, the Binks Ford car yard awaiting development, the striking modernity of the train station, donut van, and State Trustees building. The Footscray Hotel on Hopkins St is one of the sites that has changed the least. Owner Sharon and her partner want to keep the same laidback atmosphere, to have the workers able to pop in for a drink. At the same time they welcome the apartment developments on their doorstep. When Leon, the owner of the Valiant in my photograph, parked next to the hotel, he remarked that his Italian migrant parents had proudly bought their first car from the nearby Binks Ford car yard. In Footscray, such connections are commonplace – history and the future exist side by side.

Q: F5 has been a great example of collaboration and partnership between Council, local photographic artists and our local traders. Tell us about the importance and relevance of collaboration in your work in photographic art.

A: It has been great to collaborate with members of community and Council on this project. Being the fifth and final artist in this five year long project, I had the luxury of seeing how the previous years’ artists had interpreted these 10 sites, allowing me to know what had already been done and think of a different take on these previously photographed sites.

I worked closely with Council, discussing my concepts for the chosen sites, then showing them various interpretations of the sites, seeing what worked together cohesively as a final series to depict Footscray accurately and in a positive light.

Q: Now that the F5 project is wrapping up and leaving its five year legacy in our local arts community, how does it feel to reflect as being an intrinsic part of it? And tell us what is next on the agenda for Kip Scott.

A: I was excited and proud to be given the opportunity to photograph Footscray in Transition as all of the sites reflect aspects of the past and hopes of the future. The project's images will remain visible for future generations to look back on as a creative documentation of the ever-changing landscape of Footscray. My next artistic project will be a short film set in the western suburb of Sunshine for the Sunshine Short Film Festival 2016. For more info on the F5 project visit www.maribyrnong.vic.gov.au

‘Pipe Dreams’ public sculpture, created by renowned Australian artist Matthew Harding, is now part of the Maribyrnong landscape. Thompson Reserve, at the entry to Pipemakers Park, is the new home to this glorious piece of art that Council commissioned.

The ‘Pipe Dreams’ sculpture is a striking, large-scale sculptural form fabricated from three layers of interwoven 316 stainless steel rods and tubes, ranging in height from 8 to 12 metres.

The sculpture will be lit by three in-ground lights to provide a gentle spectrum of changing light, and enhance the artwork’s patterns at dusk.

THE CITY OF MARIBYRNONG PROUDLY HOSTED THE

2016 SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY GAMESIN FOOTSCRAYTHE CITY OF MARIBYRNONG WELCOMED MORE THAN 2,000 STUDENT ATHLETES WHEN THE 2016 SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY GAMES (SUG) CAME TO FOOTSCRAY ON 3 TO 7 JULY.

Here in the City of Maribyrnong, we love our sport. The 2016 SUG perfectly showcased the best that this area of Victoria has to offer – both on and off the sports field.

Students from across Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia descended upon the city to take part in competitions at 21 of our state-of-the-art sporting and leisure venues across Maribyrnong.

2009 was the last time the Southern University Games was hosted in Melbourne and this was the first time that Footscray has ever hosted the event.

Maribyrnong City Council couldn’t have been prouder to be the 2016 Games Major Event Partner, along with the Partner University, Victoria University, as well as the organising body, Australian University Sport.

This great event was a key project as part of the Footscray University Town initiative, a partnership between Council and Victoria University that that aims to enhance the economic, social and cultural strengths of Footscray through a range of activities and programs.

The City of Maribyrnong community certainly joined Council in welcoming the Games and its competitors with open arms and reveled in the atmosphere of sport and friendly competition excitement that the Games brought to our city.

This dynamic event engaged the local community and brought together over 80 community volunteers.

OUR MARIBYRNONG AQUATIC CENTRE CELEBRATED A HUGE MILESTONE ON 26 JUNE WITH MORE THAN 3,000 COMMUNITY MEMBERS COMING ALONG TO OUR FREE OPEN DAY TO CELEBRATE ‘A DECADE OF FUN AND FITNESS’.

MAC's tenth birthday was a massive hit and fun was had by all. The celebrations included tons of free entertainment, including free entry to MAC, roving entertainers, in-pool inflatables, free prizes and giveaway, colouring competition, face-painting and fitness challenges.

Since Council opened the doors to MAC in June 2006, we have had 10 million visits and seen up to 3,400 children a year learn to swim.

Maribyrnong City Council constructed the MAC in 2006 as a premier aquatic and recreation centre, boasting a range of facilities, including: a 50 metre lap pool (with moveable boom

to divide into two 25 metre pools), a warm water exercise pool, a beach-entry leisure pool, a sauna, spa and steam room, a fully equipped gymnasium, a cycling circuit room, a program room, a multipurpose room and a child care.

In March 2016, Council funded an expansion to the health club, which increased space by an additional 280 square metres, giving members a new large training space, new exercise equipment and more group training sessions, as well as a small outdoor training area.

MAC is located close to Highpoint Shopping Centre at 1 Aquatic Drive, Maribyrnong. For more info visit www.maribynrong.vic.gov.au/mac

ALMOST 11,000 INDIGENOUS PLANTS WILL TO HELP RESTORE HABITAT FOR NATIVE ANIMALS ALONG THE MARIBYRNONG RIVER AND STONY CREEK CORRIDORS THIS YEAR.

Local friends groups, residents, Council and the Green Army have joined forces to deliver an ambitious planting plan to help improve our local environment.

Together, the Green Army and Friends of Maribyrnong Valley have already planted around 2,000 trees, shrubs, grasses and ground covers along the Maribyrnong River.

Funded through a Melbourne Water Corridors of Green Grant and the Greening the West of Melbourne 1 Million Trees project, this work has made an important difference along the river in Braybrook and Maidstone.

The Green Army, a hands-on, practical environmental action program that supports local environment and heritage conservation projects across Australia, will also be making improvements in Pipemakers Park, Frog Hollow and Burndap Park.

The Green Army has also teamed up with Friends of Newells Paddock to battle several serious environmental weeds to help existing

native plants regenerate and spread as part of a Melbourne Water Community Grant to re-vegetate the wetland and surrounds.

The Friends of Stony Creek are also completing a Melbourne Water Community Grant to extend the cover of native vegetation along Stony Creek in West Footscray.

The regeneration projects are supported by the Australian Government’s Green Army Programme and 20 Million Trees Programme (part of the National Landcare Programme) and LeadWest.

COUNCIL LOVES TO HEAR FROM OUR COMMUNITY FIRST HAND, WHICH IS WHY WE REGULARLY CONDUCT CONSULTATION ON POLICIES AND PROJECTS THAT EFFECT THE PEOPLE OF OUR CITY. ONE OF THE WAYS WE GET FEEDBACK FROM YOU IS THROUGH OUR ONLINE PLATFORM CALLED YOURCITYYOURVOICE.COM.AU

The site has received more than 10,500 visits after operating for a little over a year. Some of the most useful feedback we have heard has been on park and playground design and Council services and policies.

You can register with Your City Your Voice to receive regular updates on our consultations. By just providing a username and email address, you will be able to have your say about the issues that affect you.

BRAYBROOK PLAY SPACE (REBUILDING THE OLD AEROPLANE PARK/REICHSTEIN RESERVE)

We knew there would be a lot of interest in the new design and rebuilding of this much loved playground following the devastating fire last year. We put the call out to 'Design your Playground'. The project received over 60 submissions including some great ideas

from local young people. The detail in these designs tell us how much these young people are looking forward to the new playground.

Our landscape design team have taken these ideas to develop the first concept plan. We will come back to you to see what you think about the first design as soon as it is ready.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO GET FROM YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE?

We received more than 100 responses from both current and potential neighbourhood house users. This is great information for neighbourhood house managers in planning the years’ programs and activities. Dance classes and cooking classes were common suggestions, as well as computer training.

GAMBLING – DO YOU AGREE WITH COUNCIL’S POLICY?

The issue of gambling evokes strong reactions from our community. To ensure Council got a thorough sample of community feedback on our proposed Gambling Policy, we put it to our Community Voice Panel, as well as the broader community and stakeholders. Thanks again to our panel for their time and input. The responses will greatly assist Council to advocate on this issue on behalf of our community.

YOUNG PEOPLE IN YARRAVILLE

In early 2016, Council engaged young people aged 12 to 25 who live or hang out in Yarraville. We asked what sort of activities, programs or services young people want to see in this location. Contributors went in the draw for a $100 gift card from Highpoint Shopping Centre and an event was organised in the Ballarat Street Park, with free entertainment provided by local bands.

We received more than 100 fantastic responses and ideas. The overwhelming majority of young people identified the need for more arts and music events. Council’s Youth Services Team organised the Big Chill music and arts party held in early July at the Ballarat St pop up park, featuring bands the Honey Buckets, Maeoneats, and Jess Locke.

On National Sorry Day on 26 May 2016, Council, in partnership with the cohealth Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health team, unveiled an artwork titled 'Reconciliation...It will take all of us' created by Aboriginal artist and 2014 Citizen of the Year, Francine Ngardarb Riches in the foyer of the Braybrook Community Hub.

Council is honoured to have this important piece of art on permanent display as a testament to the organisation’s steadfast commitment to reconciliation within our community, and as a reminder that we are all responsible for reconciliation.

COMMUNITY NEWSWESTERN BULLDOGS

The Western Bulldogs welcomed the AFL’s recent decision to grant the Club with a licence to field a team in the National Women’s League.

The Bulldogs, along with seven other teams, shared a historic moment for women’s

football, all being notified in June of their successful submissions.

Building on four years in the current women’s exhibition series format, and over seven decades of involvement with women’s football previously, this marks a special occasion for the Western Bulldogs.

Chief Executive Officer David Stevenson said the announcement was a significant moment for women’s football.

“We are genuinely thrilled to be part of the inaugural women’s competition, for the Club, for our fans but mostly for the young women who now can realise their dreams of being professional footballers."

“The Club has a genuine commitment to creating an elite program for our female athletes, focusing on performance,

innovation, experience and growth — and this announcement allows us to continue our leadership role in women’s football.”

“It wouldn’t have been possible without valuable contributions from our players, coaches and staff and I want to thank them for their unwavering attention and focus.”

“We operate under the 1 Club, 3 Teams banner — this marks the continuation of that, and subsequently the further growth of our football club.”

Next season’s women’s competition will feature six home-and-away rounds, with the top four playing two semi-finals and a Grand Final.

The Bulldogs were announced alongside Melbourne, Collingwood, Carlton, Fremantle, Greater Western Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane as the foundation clubs.

SONS OF THE WEST CHANGING

THE LIVES OF MENSONS OF THE WEST IS AN INNOVATIVE COMMUNITY HEALTH INITIATIVE RUN BY COUNCIL AND THE WESTERN BULLDOGS FOOTBALL CLUB. THE PROGRAM SUPPORTS MEN LIVING AND WORKING IN MELBOURNE’S WEST TO LEAD HEALTHIER LIVES BY OFFERING FREE AND ENGAGING COMMUNITY INFORMATION SESSIONS. STATISTICS TELL US THAT MEN IN MELBOURNE’S WEST ARE SOME OF THE UNHEALTHIEST IN VICTORIA. THE SONS OF THE WEST PROGRAM IMPROVES THESE STATISTICS BY RAISING AWARENESS, BY HELPING MEN LIVE BETTER, EAT BETTER AND GET INVOLVED IN THEIR COMMUNITY.

We spoke with Sons of the West participant Jonathan Manallack about his experience in the program.

Q: Tell us about your experience of the Sons of the West (SOTW) program – what can participants expect?

A: Men who come along can expect a really supportive and friendly environment with a group of men all there for the same reason – because they all want to do something positive about their health! You attend weekly interactive workshops delivered by a range of informative and inspirational speakers talking about things like portion sizes of meals, calories in each food and the required daily exercise levels to maintain or improve fitness.

Q: Tell us about attending the sessions at the Braybrook or West Footscray location. What do you love about this neighbourhood and its people?

A: I attend the West Footscray sessions and I love it. I feel we have developed into a real team and everyone is supportive of each

other. Having a Coach for each session is great, it gives us a sense of direction each week. It is such a diverse community and that is reflected in the men who come along each week.

Q: What has been the most important and most valuable thing you have walked away with in the Sons of West experience?

A: The most important thing is that we all have to start somewhere and often we as men don’t know where to find that help or are too proud too ask for it. Not only are we learning to take control of our health, but we’re also making mates along the way. It really feels like a team and that makes coming each week much easier. And even better, it’s free! It doesn’t matter if you are there to lose weight or for the exercise sessions, some blokes come along just for the company and that’s great too.

Without a doubt, this program is helping make many men’s lives better, and I applaud Council and the Western Bulldogs for having the vision to run a program like this.

Q: The Sons of the West program has been running for three years and you have taken part in the last two years. You are a seasoned pro! Tell us about the benefits, both social and physical, of the program classes?

A: This time three years ago I was walking the bare minimum, just to walk my dog 750 metres to the dog park and back about every second day. Now I am walking each day for around an hour and I go to the gym three days a week. When you see people in the same SOTW t-shirt as you at the sessions and you get to know these men and have a chat and a laugh, it's great engagement. It’s a social thing, something to look forward to. It also has made me feel better about myself as I am doing more socially and physically.

The Sons of the West program takes place in the City of Maribyrnong:

Braybrook Tuesday nights until 9 Aug, 7–9pm Braybrook Community Hub, 107 -139 Churchill Avenue, Braybrook

West Footscray Wednesday nights until 10 Aug, 7–9pm Victoria University Whitten Oval, 417 Barkly Street, West Footscray

SEDDON LOCAL WINS 2016 COMEDY OUT WEST AWARD

BACK AGAIN FOR A SECOND YEAR THE COMEDY OUT WEST (C.O.W) OPEN MIC NIGHT WAS HELD IN APRIL AT THE BLUESTONE CHURCH ARTS SPACE. COMPETING AGAINST 11 OTHER HOPEFULS, 18 YEAR OLD SEDDON STUDENT, SWEENEY PRESTON, TOOK OUT THE AUDIENCE VOTE TO WIN THE C.O.W. BELL AWARD FOR 2016.

As part of this year’s Comedy Out West season, Council’s Festival City program presented four events comprising 17 separate shows over two weeks, in partnership with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF).

We spoke to Sweeney about his big win and what attracted him to comedy, as well as his love for the City of Maribyrnong.

How did you first get into Comedy?

I’ve been silly my whole life, but I guess I only started doing more organised silliness in front of audiences around February last year.

I performed at the MICF-run event for high schoolers, ‘Class Clowns’, in 2015 at one of the Melbourne heats but didn’t progress to the State Final. I was deeply disappointed but in retrospect, I’m thankful as it made me realise I had a lot more work to do to. After that, I didn’t perform for 12 months and instead wrote about 300 jokes in preparation for this year’s ‘Class Clowns’, where I won my heat and made the State Final.

Where do you source your material from?

I think I’m fortunate to have a great group of friends who I am able to bounce ideas off. I consider many of my mates to be hilarious, I’m just the guy who writes it all down.

I am also blessed to have a family with a performing arts background, who understand how to have fun. They believe that frivolity is just as important as getting to bed at a reasonable hour and doing your homework.

Who are your comedic inspirations and why?

My first comedic love was Englishman Paul Foot. He is an absolute master of weirdness…I remember watching him on TV at age 13 thinking “I want to be that weird one day”.

I also admire a number of young Australian comedians, such as Lewis Spears and of course Hamish and Andy!

How beneficial is it to you to have events like ‘Comedy out West - Open Mic night’ to practise and showcase your talent to a live audience?

You can be the best joke-writer in the world, but if you never experience performing in front of a live audience, you lose the best feeling in comedy - hearing an audience laugh loudly at something you constructed.

I don’t know of any other local Council who puts on an event like this, but it would be great if more did.

How long have you lived in the City of Maribyrnong/Seddon? What are your favourite parts about living here and why?

I’ve lived in Seddon my whole life. I love being wedged in between Footscray and Yarraville, two of my favourite places in Melbourne. Maribyrnong has such a rich diversity of culture and activities on offer. I’m rarely bored and I love where I live and I’ve already told mum I’m not moving out until I’m old enough to be in the sequel of the movie ‘Step Brothers’.

Tackling graffiti tagging requires a combined effort from both Council and our local community. Only together can we send a strong message to vandals that tagging won’t be tolerated!

Graffiti removal on private property is the responsibility of the property owner, or possibly the tenant, depending on the terms of their lease.

One of the most effective ways to stop graffiti vandalism is to remove it as quickly as possible and to persist in its removal. To assist with this, Council offers residents and

on private propertyGRAPPLING WITH GRAFFITI

traders a free ‘Graffiti Removal Kit’ consisting of: 500ml of graffiti removal product; four litres of exterior paint (colour of choice); and Paint roller and tray kits. This Kit can be obtained by calling Council on 9688 0200.

Taking a strategic approach to this issue of graffiti can reduce the likelihood of repeat offences. Strategies include planting shrubs, installing an artistic mural, installing hard-to-move materials, improving outdoor lighting and restricting access.

If you see graffiti in-progress, call 000 to report it. Council will remove publicly visible graffiti on any property (private or public) that is racist, obscene or offensive, so if you see anything of this nature please call us immediately on 9688 0200.

Word on the Street:Curious Grace

Curious Grace ‘part of the furniture’ in Yarraville

Curious Grace, led by husband and wife team, Wayne and Anna, has operated as a furniture and homewares store in Yarraville since 2011. They have managed to secure a large customer base from all over Melbourne, gaining notoriety for their unique furniture, influenced from Scandinavian designs.

It was their dedication to the community that earned them a community-driven nomination for Council’s 2016 City of Maribyrnong Civic Award under the Enterprise Maribyrnong Awards category.

Council’s annual Civic Awards provide an opportunity to say a big ‘thank you’ to individuals, businesses and organisations who are going ‘above and beyond’ every day to help people and add to the vibrancy of our community.

Curious Grace has had exposure in a number of national interior magazines (both print and online), on the front page of The

Block magazine and has had credits on The Block television series since 2013. They were also featured in one season of renovation TV show ‘Reno Rumble’.

By capturing interest and patronage from outside of the City of Maribyrnong, the flow on effect is that more people come to our city, reinforcing it as a shopping destination of choice.

Featuring everything from lighting to beds to storage furniture, Curious Grace ensures that no replicas exist in their furniture range, ensuring a sense of authenticity. Curious Grace also gives back to the local economy by employing many staff members from Melbourne’s western region.
