This September marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. One of our very own MMJH students is a
cancer survivor (he defeated Wilm’s Tumor, a form of pediatric kidney cancer) and will be this year’s
2016 GRAND MARSHALL at the Candlelighters Fun Walk on September 10th. We urge you, our MMJH
Bobcat Family, to show your support by volunteering, donating or walking in this year’s Fun Walk.
To participate in whichever way you choose, please visit the event website today to register or donate to
“Team Blake” at Candlelighters Team Blake. The event will take place Saturday, September 10th at Ter-
ry Hershey Park in Houston.

Remember – gold is the color of pediatric cancer. So if you do nothing else, “Go Gold in September” to
show your awareness.
Thank you for your support!
The MMJH Counseling Team
Candlelighters Fun Walk gives you a way to directly help these families. This event raises funds to pro-
vide assistance to pediatric cancer patients and their families because no family should have to face
childhood cancer alone. For more than 20 years, Candlelighters has supported the needs of families
facing childhood cancer with Parent Consultants at both Texas Children’s Cancer Center and at The Uni-
versity of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Children’s Cancer Hospital who Provide emotional, educa-
tional and practical support to families of children with cancer.

Dear MMJH Parents/Guardians, September 2016
We are excited to again offer math students the opportunity to take the AMC 8 examination. The AMC8 is a 25-
question multiple-choice contest for middle school students in grades 6, 7, and 8. The material covered on the
test is the middle school mathematics curriculum. Topics include probability, estimation, percentages, spatial
visualization, everyday applications and reading and interpreting graphs. The AMC8 is 25 questions in
length and is multiple-choice with no penalty for guessing. The contest takes only 40 minutes. A
student’s score is the number of problems correctly answered.
Each year over 350,000 students from roughly 6,000 schools participate in the AMC contests. Of these, 10,000
students qualify each year to participate in the AIME scheduled for late March/early April. Of this group approx-
imately 500 students will be invited to take the prestigious USAMO in early May. Other recognition opportunities
for participating in the contest include the following:
Certificate of Distinction is given to all students who receive a perfect score.
MMJH Plaque recognition is given to the student(s) with the highest score.
The top ten students will receive a Certificate for Outstanding Achievement at the MMJH Awards Ceremony.
The AMC8 contest is Tuesday, November 15, after school from 2:40 – 3:30 pm. Students will need
transportation home after the test.

Makerspace Donations
Dear Bobcat Parents and Guardians,
We are in the process of creating a library “makerspace” here at MMJH. What is a makerspace?
A makerspace is an area that allows for creativity and innovation to occur so that students can engage in learning experiences that allow them to make real life connections. Makerspaces provide students with a place to tinker and develop something that may not have been possible to create without a space with re-sources. We want this experience to be a fun opportunity to expand science, art, engineering, program-ming, and technology skills for each student. To achieve this goal, we are in need of several items to be donated for our makerspace.
If you are able, we would be appreciative of any donation that you are willing to provide. At this time, we are asking for donations for the following items:
Legos (including the green bases)
K-Nex
Wooden Blocks
Pipe Cleaners
Elmer’s Glue
Washi Tape
Popsicle Sticks
Toilet Paper Rolls
Rubberbands
Markers
Buttons
Yarn
Crochet Hooks
Cardboard
Duct Tape
Masking Tape
Felt and Fabric
Playdough
Gift Wrap Tissue Paper
Modeling Clay
Ribbon
Scrapbook and Construction Paper
Modge Podge
Newspaper
Toothpicks
Foam Paint Brushes
Scissors
Stickers
If you have any items that you are willing to donate, please either call or drop off the items in the donation boxes inside the front office and the library. We appreciate all that you do each day to support McMeans Junior High.
