Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Ask a person with high blood pressure who has recently been told by their doctor: “remove the salt from you diet.” Some simply use a substitute. Some say they don’t miss it. Some say: “Without it my food
has NO taste.” Jesus said: “You are the salt of the earth.” - - - A woman, as a result of a serious accident, was blind for 4 months. After the final surgery and accompanying recuperation, the bandages were removed and she was able to see. She
was later quoted as saying: “It’s the light – the light; the most beautiful thing I have ever seen!” Jesus said: “You are the light of the world.” - - - Isaiah calls it the ‘light’. He could equally refer to it as ‘salt’. In this respect, his writings could almost be called another ‘gospel’ – for he certainly speaks the heart of Jesus’ message, at least as it refers to love and care for the vulnerable and the poor. Speaking for God, Isaiah calls us to: “Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not
turn your back on your own.” “Then,” he says “your light shall break forth like the dawn.” Becoming light and salt is a dual thing. We do it because it seasons and brightens the lives of others. But we also do it because in the becoming of light and salt, our own lives are changed. We discover the power and grace of God in our own lives and actions. The 1952 Nobel Peace Prize winner and theologian, organist, philosopher, physician and medical missionary - Albert Schweitzer - once said: “Do something for somebody everyday for which
you do not get paid.” This is one quote out of literally hundreds, for he wrote a famous book and philosophy: ‘Reverence for Life”. He got it! He realized that the gospel is absolutely true. Living it; doing it; is not so that we can DO good. Living it; doing it; is so we can be and find good. We are changed. We discover. We become light/salt. “One thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are
those who will have sought and found how to serve.” Serving; giving; sharing; for-giving; these are the things of gospel living. Albert Schweitzer saw it so clearly. Jesus IS truly concerned with our happiness. Jesus knows it gets awfully lonely being stuck in/on ourselves. Real happiness happens when we go out of ourselves for others. Money can’t buy it. Power can make it happen but often doesn’t. Prestige and position could multiply it and does for the few. But real happiness can be found in being salt and being light.

TOGETHER IN MISSION 2017 ANNUAL CAMPAIGN BE THE LIGHT OF CHRIST
Next weekend, the Together in Mission annual appeal will launch. This is a great opportunity to put your love into action. At every Mass we will hear from an insightful speaker that will tell us about the importance of sharing our gifts with others. We are in this together — the mission of helping our fellow brothers and sisters and we are all asked to share the light of Christ with others. For those of you that have made gifts in the past, be on the lookout for a special mailing from our Archdiocesan leaders asking you to renew your gift. Our parish has been tasked with raising its GOAL to $35,500 in 2017. I am confident that each of you will prayerfully consider sharing the abundant gifts that God has shared with each of us. During all Masses next weekend, we will conduct the in-pew process for the collection of gifts & pledges to this year’s appeal. MASS AND ANOINTING OF THE SICK — FEB. 11
Do you know someone who is facing surgery, or an elderly person or child who is sick? You are encouraged to bring them to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 12:30 p.m. Through anointing, the grace of the Holy Spirit comforts and strengthens the soul of the sick person. The Mass and Anointing of the Sick are co-hosted by the Cathedral and the Western Association of the Order of Malta in observance of the 2017 World Day of the Sick. Bishop Edward Clark will preside at the Mass and anointing. The Mass is also being held in observance of the Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes. The Mass is open to everyone, and you do not need to be sick to attend. Many healthy people find it fulfilling to pray alongside the sick. El poder puede hacer que suceda, pero a menudo no sucede. El prestigio y la posición podría multiplicarla y lo hace por unos pocos. Pero la felicidad verdadera se puede encontrar en ser sal y ser luz.

CAMPAÑA ANUAL UNIDOS EN MISIÓN 2017 SÉ LA LUZ DE CRISTO
El próximo fin de semana se lanzará la Campaña Anual Unidos en Misión. Esta es una excelente oportunidad para demostrar nuestro amor. En todas las Misas escucharemos sobre la importancia de compartir nuestros dones con los demás. Estamos juntos en esta mission y a todos se nos invita a compartir la luz de Cristo con los demás. Quienes han realizado donaciones anteriormente deben estar atentos porque rcibirán una invitación por correo de los líderes de nuestra Arquidi ócesis para renovar su compromiso. Nuestra parroquia tendrá la tarea de recaudar LA META PARROQUIAL de $35,500 en el 2017. Estoy seguro de que considerarán, mediante la oración, la posibilidad de compartir los abundantes dones que Dios ha compartido con cada uno de ustedes. Durante todas las Misas estaremos llevando a cabo el proceso de colecta de regalos y compromisos para la apelación de este año. Juntos podemos hacer que el amor y la presencia de Dios sean sentidos por todos, especialmente por los más necesitados.

Misa y la Unción de los Enfermos en la Catedral el 8 de febrero ¿Conoce usted a alguien que se enfrenta a una cirugía, o una persona mayor o niño que está enfermo?
