On April 1st, 26 seniors, 3 teachers, 1 principal, and 2 bus drivers began the 17 hour drive to New York City! Thanks to movies, iPods, conversations, food, and sleep, the drive was actually a quick one, and we were soon in Times Square eating New York pizza with our tour guide, Meredith, and climbing to the top of Rockefeller Center to see the view of the Big Apple. Over the next few days, we experienced a lot! The visit to the Statue of Liberty was inspiring. Central Park was lovely. The 9/11 Memorial was solemn and dignified. Chinatown was a blast! The kids discovered the joy of haggling, and they did a good job at it too. We walked the Brooklyn Bridge, awed by the sheer size of the structure and amused by the many locks attached to the grating. The Metropolitan Museum of Art brought us face to face with the works of Picasso, Rembrandt, and Monet. The Greek statues, Egyptian mummies, and Medieval suits of armor were fascinating. We expanded our culinary experiences, too, eating Dominican food in Spanish Harlem, Italian food in Little Italy, and hot dogs from street vendors. We listened to live jazz at The Garage and discovered the joys of a New York deli. We walked around Manhattan in the dark during our Dark Histories of New York tour. New York sure has some, well, interesting characters in its past. Our last day in the city was spent touring the on location sites for different movies and TV shows. We visited everything from the fire station used in Ghostbusters to the apartment buildings from the TV show Friends. From there we went to Broadway to see The Phantom of the Opera. The performance and special effects were amazing. The last thing we did in New York was to take a dinner/dancing cruise around the Bay. It was beautiful, but more importantly, it was FUN! Who knew so many seniors could dance? Finally, we boarded the bus for the ride home. We were exhausted, so sleep ate up lots of traveling hours. It was good to get back home, but it was a trip that will never be forgotten.

FURTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA ATTEND STATE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE Almond Bancroft Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) members traveled to Appleton on April 7th – 8th to compete at the State Leadership Conference. The conference started with motivating keynote speaker, Justin Boudreau. Justin encourages students to think for themselves vs. telling them what to think and challenged them to show more gratitude to those influential people around them. While participating at the conference, students were able to tour businesses, attend workshops, earn recognition for their professional dress, as well as network with students in chapters from throughout the state. Students who place in the top three of each event earn the right to compete at National Leadership Conference. This year’s National Leadership Conference is being held in Nashville, TN on June 29th - July 2nd. Members have been working hard all year to demonstrate their Excellence in Action.
I am so proud to announce that our very own Almond-Bancroft students were recognized at the closing ceremony of the conference for their achievements. Christian Bloede placed 2nd in Networking Concepts and will be moving on to Nationals. The team of Meghan Menadue and Megan Wiczek placed 4th in Desktop Publishing. Please congratulate these students on their success. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the local businesses who have financially supported our students (listed alphabetically) – Bancroft State Bank, Brian Smith Accounting, Donaldson Company, Guth Farm, L&L Propane, North Central Irrigation, Portage County Bank, and the Washara Argus.
The Middle School 4th quarter trip will be June 2, 2014 to a venue in the Wisconsin Dells. All students who have exhibited
positive behavior during the 4th quarter grading period will be welcome on this trip. Students who violate school or classroom
PBIS rules, and who thereby receive one (1) “Major” or six (6) or more “Minors” will not be able to be included in this final
trip. Please discuss this with your middle school student today!

Elementary GIFTS Lessons
Elementary students in grades K-4 are learning about our final the concept for the school year,
forgiveness. For the purpose of our lessons,
we have defined forgiveness as: to stop
blaming or feeling angry toward yourself or
others. Because that is not the easiest task,
we will be learning some ways to deal with the
angry or hurt feelings we have inside of us.
To the right is a list of books that you might
choose to read with your children to explore
the topic of forgiveness further.
Fifth grade students have chosen one of the fifteen character traits they have learned about with me
in elementary school to research and prepare a small presentation. They will be giving their
presentations to the class during the last few G.I.F.T.S classes of the school year.

Almond-Bancroft High School Awards Ceremony Join us May 13, 2014 (Tuesday) at 7:30 pm in the Almond School
Auditorium. Students will be acknowledged for their achievements in
attendance, student council, and various academic departments at our
annual Awards Ceremony. Senior scholarship recipients will also be
recognized. The evening will conclude with the annual induction ceremony
for the Almond-Bancroft Chapter of the National Honor Society.
Naonal Honor Society Membership Candidacy
To be eligible for membership consideration, students must have a
cumulative grade point average of a 3.2 and meet high standards of
leadership, service, and character. Members of the sophomore class
will be evaluated by a Faculty Council consisting of five members.
Leadership is based on a student’s role as a participant in school and
community activities, and election to offices. The service requirement is
met by those actions taken by the student on behalf of others, without
personal compensation. Also reviewed is the student’s attitude toward
any service project. Character is measured in terms of integrity,
behavior, ethics, and cooperation with both students and faculty.
Scheduling
All 2014-2015 high school students are currently finalizing their
schedules with Ms. Spear. Just a reminder that all schedule
changes must be made before the end of the school year or over
the summer (all requests must be submitted before August 20). Per
the curriculum handbook, no schedule changes will be made once
the school year starts.

Dear Friends, Family, and Basketball Fans, I am very pleased and proud to announce that I was
recently named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) State Boys’ Basketball All-Star Game. Coach Lamb nominated me for this honor. I was selected to represent the Northern Wisconsin Division 5 team. I am proud of this achievement and am honored to represent my family, friends, and local hometown fans at the WBCA All-Star Games. Free tickets are available for anyone who would like to attend. As part of being selected to the All-Star Team, I am counted on to raise money for the fight against cancer. I have been asked to encourage all of you to contribute to the MACC (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer) Fund. The MACC Fund is a non-profit organization whose mission is to fund research to find a cure for childhood cancers. In order to raise money, I am asking you for your tax deductible donation in any amount you can, by Friday, May 16th. Every amount helps! I will be running fundraisers for both the Elementary and Middle School classes. Please support my efforts to raise money for the MACC Fund by sending a contribution for this great cause. Checks can be made payable to: WBCA/MACC Fund. It is truly and honor to be chosen as one of Wisconsin’s best senior basketball players and to represent my community , family, and friends in the final high school basketball game of my career. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that I am very excited for! Thank you for your support! Evan Pagel

Food Service News
Dear Families, We can not believe we are nearing the end of the school year! If your family has a negative lunch bill please try to get your payment in, if you have not done so already. Your student will not receive end of year clearance until their breakfast,
lunch, and morning milk bill is paid in full. If you have any questions about your lunch bill please give Trina a call, 715.366.2941 x 422. Put this on your calendar, students in the District can receive free breakfast and lunch Monday through Thursday, June 9th –26th and July 7th-24th, at the Almond School. Breakfast is served from 8:00 am to 8:30 am and lunch is served from 11:30 am to 12:00 pm. We hope you can come take part! Connie Kaehn, Teresa Gutke, Lynn Baird & Trina Warzynski
“This institution is an equal opportunity provider”
Almond-Bancroft Schools would like to thank
Scott and Darlene McChesney
for their dedicated years of service to the District.
We wish them well
in their retirement and thank them for their commitment to
keeping our schools well maintained.
Parents, did you know that your child can jump start their day by eating a
healthy breakfast at school for only $1.00 and breakfast is free for students who
receive free or reduced lunch.
Breakfast is served from 7:55 am until 8:10 am.
Elementary students have breakfast in the cafeteria and high school and middle school students can grab their breakfast
and take it to their 1st hour class to enjoy!
This institution is an equal opportunity provider.
