SAINT OF THE WEEK

The Story of the Annunciation of the Lord The feast of the Annunciation, now recognized as a solemnity, was first celebrated in the fourth or fifth century. Its central focus is the Incarnation: God has

become one of us. From all eternity God had decided that the Second Person of the Blessed

Trinity should become human. Now, as Luke 1:26-38 tells us, the decision is being realized. The God-Man embraces all humanity, indeed all creation, to bring

it to God in one great act of love. Because human beings have rejected God, Jesus will accept a life of

suffering and an agonizing death: “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s

friends” (John 15:13). Mary has an important role to play in God’s plan.

From all eternity, God destined her to be the mother of Jesus and closely related to him in the creation and redemption of the world. We could say that

God’s decrees of creation and redemption are joined in the decree of Incarnation. Because Mary is God’s instrument in the Incarnation, she has a role to play with Jesus in creation and redemption. It is a God-given role. It is God’s grace from beginning to end.

Mary becomes the eminent figure she is only by God’s grace. She is the empty space where God could

act. Everything she is she owes to the Trinity. Mary is the virgin-mother who fulfills Isaiah 7:14 in a

way that Isaiah could not have imagined. She is united with her son in carrying out the will of God

(Psalm 40:8-9; Hebrews 10:7-9; Luke 1:38). Together with Jesus, the privileged and graced Mary

is the link between heaven and earth. She is the human being who best, after Jesus, exemplifies the possibilities of human existence. She received into her lowliness the infinite love of God. She shows

how an ordinary human being can reflect God in the ordinary circumstances of life. She exemplifies what

the Church and every member of the Church is meant to become. She is the ultimate product of the

creative and redemptive power of God. She manifests what the Incarnation is meant to

accomplish for all of us.

Dear St. Anthony Family, We wish to thank you for your many prayers, visits, calls, cards, messages and gifts during our recent surgery and hospital stay in Houston. They did much to make us feel close even though we were far away. It was with great joy and pride that we would share them and our St. Anthony stories with visitors and staff. Much love in Christ, Deacon Steve & Susan Olson

SUNDAY SOUNDBITE Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion

Holy Week begins today. For me it’s always a time filled with rich memories and dramatic stories.

Hello, I’m Father Greg Friedman with the Sunday Soundbite for Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion.

During this week the dramatic story of Jesus’ death and resurrection is linked with the human stories of

those preparing for Baptism in our parishes. At today’s liturgy we’ll listen to the proclamation of the Passion and Death of Jesus from the Gospel of

Mark. Mark gives us a portrait of one who is truly a “Suffering Servant”–first described in the Hebrew

Scriptures by Isaiah–whose Servant poems we hear throughout the week, beginning today.

In Mark’s Gospel, the Lord spends himself in service to others. The cross he embraces is a

powerful sign of his self-giving. But the story is not only the story of Jesus, as

Scripture scholar Eugene LaVerdiere reminds us. It’s also a story about the testing of Jesus’ disciples. Earlier in the Gospel, Jesus asked two of them if they

could drink from the cup he would drink, and endure the baptism he would receive. In the Passion

account Judas, Peter, and finally the rest of the Twelve, fail the test and abandon Jesus.

The Lent just past has invited us to renew our baptismal commitment. The liturgy a week from

today will celebrate our rebirth to new life through the Lord’s passion, death, and resurrection. Let us resolve to enter the story with him today. How will

we meet the test?

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Here is a Stewardship story from a Mom of a young

and growing family in our Parish: "We give on-line because our income fluctuates and

we want our tithe to be first in our budget. I need the grace of tithing. Sometimes by month-end we

may be down to $20 in our checking account. I just put it in the plate. I tell God,

'This came from you; we return it to you. We are totally dependent on you. You know our needs.

We know you will provide.' And He does!" Amen.

ST. ANTHONY’S RELICS VISITS THE DIOCESE OF CHARLESTON His Excellency, Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone, has

given his blessing for the relics to tour in the Diocese of Charleston from April 6 to April 15. The

tour will begin in Bluffton and will end in Lexington. One relic is a fragment of St. Anthony’s floating rib

while the second relic is skin of his cheek. Sister Lucy, one of the three seers of Fatima, venerated the relics in 1995 in her convent in Coimbra, Portugal on

the 800th anniversary of the saint’s birth. “By inviting us to venerate the mortal remains of the martyrs and saints, the Church does not forget that, in the end, these are indeed just human bones, but

they are bones that belonged to individuals touched by the living power of God. The relics of the saints are traces of that invisible but real presence which

sheds light upon the shadows of the world and reveals the Kingdom of Heaven in our midst.” —

Pope Benedict Emeritus Visiting the Upstate on Tuesday, April 10

Our Lady of the Rosary 3710 Augusta Rd., Greenville, SC Veneration from noon to 4 p.m.

Saint Anthony of Padua is known to millions of Catholics for ‘lost items’. Saint Anthony’s reputation as a finder of lost things dates to an incident in the

saint’s life. As the legend goes, a novice who had grown tired of religious life decided to leave the Franciscan community. But before leaving, the

novice took Saint Anthony’s psalter. The book was very important to Anthony, especially since it was before the printing press had been invented. The

psalter had notes and comments he made in teaching his students in the Franciscan order.

Anthony prayed that the psalter would be found and returned to him. Anthony’s prayers were answered. The novice returned the psalter and returned to the

order. We invite you to come and ask for Saint Anthony’s interces-sion for more than the loss of material things, but also for loss of faith, family

harmony, health, hope, mercy and peace of mind, just to name a few.
