Principal’s Message Quality Education in a Stimulating Environment Dear parents and carers Year 6 to Year 7 High School Applications The process of officially moving students from Year 6 2018 to Year 7 2019 is underway. Local high schools are currently holding open nights for families to attend. All applications to high school are to be returned to Engadine West PS for administration purposes. These include in area and out of area applications. There is a process in place for applications to be forwarded to high schools for processing. All applications for Year 7 2019 need to be returned to Engadine West PS by Friday 16 March 2018. Classroom Visit My late afternoon visit to KS this week was a happy one. Mrs Sterling was asking her students who enjoyed differ- ent parts of the day and about the happy things they did in class and in the playground. Each student was able to respond to enjoying activities and feeling happy about their Kindergarten day. Harmony Day…. ….is next Wednesday. Students are encouraged to wear an orange accessory on the day and extend that to orange all the way for the after school disco. Acknowledging Harmony Day celebrates cultural diversity and recognises the varying backgrounds of students at our school. Please see additional information later in the newsletter. Parent Feedback Spot At the end of last year a survey was sent to parents asking for some feedback about our school - what we do well and in what areas we can improve. Each week I will provide information on the areas highlighted in the survey. Area for improvement: Upgrading all classrooms with air-conditioning The first step to air-conditioning all classrooms at our school is to ensure the power in the school can manage any extra draw on it from the installation of additional air conditioners. This report must be undertaken by a certain level of electrician. The electrician has been to the school and inspected all power boards and I am now waiting for the report to be sent to me. When I am in receipt of the report, decisions can be made on funding either a power up- grade in the first instance, or moving to fund air-conditioning units throughout classrooms. Currently we have 32 classrooms including the computer lab and band room. Of those 32, 13 have air-conditioning. Area we do well: Great CAPA program There are many opportunities for students to engage in creative and performing arts at our school. Band, choir, dance, drama and art opportunities are numerous and students have options in trying new things, building on their skills and performing in front of audiences. We are lucky to have talented teachers who have specific skills in these areas and extend their skills beyond the classroom to share with students. Parent Feedback Spot

At the end of last year a survey was sent to parents asking for some feedback about our school - what we do well and in what areas we can improve. Each week I will provide information on the areas highlighted in the survey.

Area for improvement: Upgrading all classrooms with air-conditioning

The first step to air-conditioning all classrooms at our school is to ensure the power in the school can manage any extra draw on it from the installation of additional air conditioners. This report must be undertaken by a certain level of electrician. The electrician has been to the school and inspected all power boards and I am now waiting for the report to be sent to me. Area we do well: Great CAPA program

There are many opportunities for students to engage in creative and performing arts at our school. Band, choir, dance, drama and art opportunities are numerous and students have options in trying new things, building on their skills and performing in front of audiences. We are lucky to have talented teachers who have specific skills in these areas and extend their skills beyond the classroom to share with students.

Deputy Principal’s Report Years 4, 5 and 6 Tell Them From Me Survey

Engadine West PS will soon begin its annual students’ Tell Them From Me survey. This is a fantastic process that allows students to inform the school about their learning and well being. The survey is only for students from Years 4, 5 and 6. Later in the year we will also survey parents and teachers. The Tell Them From Me Survey has a default acceptance and parents need to opt out of this survey if you do not wish your child to participate by Tuesday 20 March 2018. All student responses are anonymous and students can not be identified. The survey will be conducted in school from Wednesday 21 March 2018. A note has gone home today to all Year 4, 5 and 6 students and is also on our website under Notes and Forms: http://www.engadinew-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/notes Jason Wilkins Deputy Principal

Coles Sports for Schools

Engadine West PS has registered for the Coles Sports for Schools program. The race for Sports for Schools vouchers has begun! The vouchers will go towards the purchase of sports gear for students to use at the school. For every $10 spent at any Coles supermarket, customers will receive one Sports for Schools voucher. We are asking all families and friends to start collecting and send their vouchers to the collection bins located in the school office foyer or directly in the bin provided for Engadine West PS in Coles Engadine. Thankyou for supporting our school!

Easter Celebrations This year we will be holding our special celebration for Easter on Thursday 29 March 2018 from 11.15am until approximately 1.15pm. We invite parents, grandparents and friends to come along and join in the festivities. Students in Kindergarten to Year 2 are asked to make (with the help of mum and dad) an Easter hat for our parade. The hat could be based on the theme Easter or maybe a favourite character from a book or television program that your children like to watch. Easter masks are also a good idea. Be as creative as you like. Students in Years 3 and 4 will be asked to make ‘eggs on legs’ for the parade. These are cardboard, decorated egg shaped panels that can be worn on the chest of students to give them the appearance of walking Easter eggs. Students in Years 5 and 6 are asked to make an egg diorama. Students can choose an “eg………” or “ex………” word and turn it into an “egg”. For example-eggsample: Edwards-Eggwards, execution-eggsecution, extreme-eggstreme, explode-eggsplode, exterminate-eggsterminate, excite-eggcite etc. Students are asked to build an egg diorama that portrays the “egg” word as a theme. The “eggsibition” will be on display in the school hall. The parade/eggsibition is not a competition but we encourage all students to participate. Students can come to school dressed in mufti clothes with suitable footwear for parading around the asphalt playground. No thongs or singlet tops are to be worn. Please remember that we are a nut aware school and refrain from using nuts or nut products in your decorations. Help to keep our school safe for everyone. The students will begin the parade under the COLA at around 12.00pm. Recess will be from 11.15am until 11.45am. Parents and visitors will be able to purchase food and drinks from the canteen. The P&C will be selling raffle tickets and the raffle will be drawn during the parade. We are asking for donations of Easter eggs, baskets or made up baskets containing Easter goodies wrapped in clear cellophane for the raffle. Donations can be left at the school office.

We look forward to seeing you at school for an eggciting day!

Harmony Day is a day to celebrate the cultural and religious diversity of everyone who calls Australia home. The theme for Harmony Day 2018 is ‘everyone belongs’. To come together as a school community to celebrate our diversity on and beyond 21 March, students are asked to dress with orange accessories on this day. Accessories may include hair ties, wristbands, socks or other small additions to regular school uniform. We ask that no coloured hairspray or face paint is used for school. Student will complete artworks in their classrooms for a display in the library and will have the opportunity to enter an art/writing competition in Term 2. Harmony Day also marks the first school disco for the year and we would love to see students continue with the orange theme when dressing for this exciting event. Thankyou for helping support the school and the students who make up our diverse school community.

Street Library

Thankyou to our wonderful Engadine West PS community for generously donating good quality books for our street library. The street library has been extremely popular, used by students and parents alike and we will be seeking regular donations to keep up with demand. Thankyou kindly and happy reading!
