This shows a syllable division pattern that I know: VCCV

Page 10: Phonics VCCV Patterns. Listen to Miss Udell read four words. Repeat them. Tell how many syllables you hear.

Let’s try another one.

prob / lem

Look for the first vowel in the word. What do you see?

What consonant is right after the vowel?

Page 11: Phonics VCCV Patterns. Listen to Miss Udell read four words. Repeat them. Tell how many syllables you hear.

Closed Syllable

prob / lem

You’ve found the first VC pattern.

If a vowel is followed by a consonant we call it a closed syllable.

Page 12: Phonics VCCV Patterns. Listen to Miss Udell read four words. Repeat them. Tell how many syllables you hear.

Next,

prob / lem

If it is a closed syllable the vowel will make a short sound.

What is o’s short sound?

Page 13: Phonics VCCV Patterns. Listen to Miss Udell read four words. Repeat them. Tell how many syllables you hear.

What comes after the VC

prob / lem VC /

What comes after the letter b? Is it a vowel or a consonant?

Page 14: Phonics VCCV Patterns. Listen to Miss Udell read four words. Repeat them. Tell how many syllables you hear.

What comes after the VC

prob / lem VC / C

You’re right! It’s a consonant!

What comes after the VC

prob / lem VC / C

What comes after the letter l? Is it a vowel or a consonant?

Page 16: Phonics VCCV Patterns. Listen to Miss Udell read four words. Repeat them. Tell how many syllables you hear.

What comes after the VCC

prob / lem VC / CV

Right again! It is a vowel!

Page 17: Phonics VCCV Patterns. Listen to Miss Udell read four words. Repeat them. Tell how many syllables you hear.

Blend the word!

prob / lem VC / CV

A VCCV pattern let’s you know that there are two syllables.

It also let’s you know that the vowels make their short sounds.

Page 18: Phonics VCCV Patterns. Listen to Miss Udell read four words. Repeat them. Tell how many syllables you hear.

Does this sound complicated?

Let’s practice!

Look for the VCCV patterns in these words!

Now I can divide the word!I’ll divide the word into syllables right between the consonants!

Now it is your turn.

Right the next word on a piece of paper.

Draw a slash between the consonants.
