Thank you for purchasing the Hafler PH60B™ phono stage, one of the best sounding and most versatile phono preamps ever made. The PH60B will boost the signal from your turn-table and apply the necessary RIAA curve, allowing you to connect to a HIFI playback system, a pro audio console input or a recording interface.

Before making any connections, make sure your audio system is turned off. This will help avoid loud turn-on and connection transients that can damage more sensitive components such as tweeters.

The Hafler PH60B is designed for a turntable that is equipped with a moving coil (MC) cartridge, allowing for high quality playback over balanced or unbalanced outputs. If your turn-table is equipped with a moving magnet (MM) cartridge, please consider purchasing the PH50B, which is specifically designed for these types of cartridges.

COILSTYLUS

The Hafler PH60B is a combination pre-preamp and RIAA preamp that both increases the level to accommodate the moving coil, adds in the RIAA equalization curve and then boosts the signal so that it can be used by a typical high fidelity receiver.

aBoUT THe RIaa eqUaLIzaTIon CURVeThe Recording Institute Association of America (RIAA) figured out that in order to reproduce a vinyl recording effectively, the high frequencies have to be exaggerated. Upon playback, the reverse filter must then be applied – resulting in a flat and natural sound.

Moving coil cartridges produce a much lower output than a moving magnet. In order to bring their gain up to a useable level, between 60 and 70dB of gain is required. This in fact is extremely difficult to do without introducing noise or artefact. This is why moving coil preamps are more expensive.

The Hafler PH60B is set up to accommodate various types of moving coil cartridges. This is accomplished with a series of internal jumpers that can be set for 25Ω, 50Ω and 100Ω plus a custom setting should this be needed.

The PH60B comes factory set at 100Ω as this will accommodate about 90% of the cartridges used today. Your phono cartridge manufacturer will suggest the appropriate load for its cartridge for optimal performance – which should be found in the cartridge’s manual or web site. If your cartridge requires a different load, simply take the cover off the PH60B using a standard Phillips screwdriver and a HEX 5/64", carefully pull the jumper from the 100Ω position and push it back on to the 25Ω or 50Ω position to suit. Setting the load correctly will assure the most accurate frequency response.

Some cartridge manufacturers may suggest a unique (specific) load to optimize their cartridge’s performance. To address this, a fourth ‘custom’ position in the jumper section of the PCB allows a resistor to be soldered in to suit. Simply have your dealer contact the Hafler service depart-ment with the required load and we will calculate the proper resistor. Your dealer’s service department can then insert the part at a nominal cost to accommodate your needs.

Turn off your system and connect the output from your turntable to your PH60B. Make sure you use high quality coaxial cables with proper shielding to minimize noise. It is also very important that you ensure the ground connection from the turntable is properly and securely fastened to your PH60B.

Using the Unbalanced outputsIf you are connecting to a HIFI receiver use the RCA outputs on the PH50B into a pair of line level inputs on the receiver. Do not use inputs labeled ‘phono’ as these will apply the RIAA equalization curve a sec-ond time, resulting in distortion and a loss of high frequencies.

Using the Balanced outputsThe balanced XLR outputs on the PH60B allow you to connect to de-vices with balanced inputs, including some home stereo receivers, and pro audio equipment such as recording interfaces or mixing consoles. This allows you to set up a turntable for playback in a home theater or recording studio, or to convert your vinyl collection to a digital format using recording software. Ensure that you are connecting to inputs that are set for line-level operation. Once connected, should you encounter buzz or hum from ground loops, simply engage the LIFT switch on the front of the PH60B to lift the audio ground on the XLR outputs. The bal-anced outputs on the PH60B can be set between two different outputs levels using an internal push-switch. The default setting is +4dB with the switch in the ‘out’ position, and -10dB with the switch pushed in.

The balanced outputs on the PH60B can be set between two different output levels using an internal push-switch. The default setting is +4dB with the switch in the ‘out’ position, and -10dB with the switch pushed in. To access the switch follow the instructions on pg.4 and remove the necessary screws to open the PH60B.

Most consumer audio devices are set to operate at a -10dB line level, while pro audio equipment such as mixing consoles and recording in-terfaces will be set to accept a higher output +4dB level. Check with the manufacturer of your receiving device to determine whether it operates at -10 or +4dB.

UsIngThe PH60B is equipped with a switchable high-pass filter that can be activated to eliminate excessive low frequency rumble. This can occur when listening to music at higher levels. If you encounter rumble, simply activate the filter. This handy function can also be used to reduce low frequency transmission to other rooms. Bass energy is much more pow-erful than mids and highs. Cutting the bass enables you to increase the volume without causing others as much discomfort.

A cable clamp next to the power jack can be employed to prevent ac-cidental disconnection. Loosen the clamp, pass the power cable through and re-tighten.
