Zero waste Off the grid Protect nature

We are proud of our goal of zero waste. Limit the waste you leave behind. If you can’t take it with you, buy red rubbish bags from the Council in Claris. Place bags outside your accommodation or drop at the Claris landfill. Best of all, leave nothing behind – except friendships.

Our native flora and fauna is unique and protected. Dogs on beaches should be on leashes to protect endangered shorebirds. Protect our kauri by cleaning your boots at Department of Conservation cleaning stations on tracks, at wharfs/airport.

Being off the grid means the darkest, starriest nights. It also means limited power and water, so use both with care. And, mobile reception is limited across the island. Also, remember to take a torch when you’re coming home at night.

Take your time on our roads – be aware, pull over if there are faster cars behind you. Soak in the island and all it has to offer.

Our island gets busy. Please book your flights or ferry, car, shuttle and accommodation in advance. The Visitor Centre can help – call 09 429 0033 or email [email protected]

Enjoy what our artists, chefs and shops have to offer. Meet our unique locals and appreciate their humour and hospitality.
