MOMENT FOR REFLECTIONWelcome to Children’s Sunday at Hancock Church! This morning, you will get to see, hear, and admire the contributions of just some of the children who belong to Hancock Church. Their efforts and talents are woven throughout the service, and for them we give thanks!Jesus tells the Disciples to calm down! They’re feeling the weight of the world on their shoulders:

“We have to spread the word of God and bring hope to the world?? How do we do that! If we make a mistake or get lost, will the whole world suffer?” Thinking this way will make the Disciples a nervous and anxious bunch! Jesus tells them that any act done from a place of love and kindness will bring everyone closer to God. “Start small” he says, then work your way up. When we start small, we get stronger day by day until we become the kind of people who can bring God’s love and hope to the whole world.

PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Genna BeattyMatthew 10:40-42 (from The Message)

“We are closely linked together in this harvest work. Anyone who accepts what you do, accepts me (the One who sent you). Anyone who accepts what I do accepts God (who sent me). Accepting a messenger of God is as good as being God’s messenger. Accepting someone’s help is as good as giving someone help. This is a large work I’ve called you into, but don’t be overwhelmed by it. It’s best to start small. Give a cool cup of water to someone who is thirsty, for instance. The smallest act of giving or receiving makes you a true apprentice. You won’t lose out on a thing.”

Build Community in a Diverse World

Anti-Racism Small GroupsWould you like to further explore what it means to become anti-racist? Are you interested in being part of a small group that helps each other learn and grow in our own awareness of what it means to be allies to our black, indigenous, people of color sisters and brothers? These would be informal, non-judgmental, low-pressure groups, where, as we grow and learn, we can

grow together in order to create a more just and equitable world. If you are interested in this, please reach out to Barbara ([email protected]). Thanks so much!

Immigrant and Refugee JusticeHancock’s Immigrant and Refugee Justice Team has launched a Google Group to facilitate the sharing of information, questions, and ideas among the Hancock community about immigrant and refugee issues. It functions like a listserv; you can post information or questions to the group and everyone who

is a member will see it, and they can reply and continue the conversation. If all you want to do is read the conversations without posting yourself, that’s fine too; there’s no obligation to participate. (If you’re familiar with the HEAT Google Group we’ve had for many years, it will function like that.) To receive an invitation, or if you have any questions, write [email protected].

Help Us Maintain OUr secUrity On ZOOM!In order to maintain our security during Zoom gatherings such as meetings and coffee hours, please be sure that your Zoom account name is reflective of your actual name, first and last. You can change your Zoom name by going to zoom.com and editing your account. Doing so helps us know who and who not to admit to meetings and gatherings. Thank you!

Walk Our Spiritual Paths TogetherTake the Discernment Team Survey

The Discernment Team invites you to take the Senior Minister Discernment Survey. Below you will find a link to the survey, as well as link to a PDF that allows you to preview the survey before taking it online.

The cover letter included in the survey provides details about the Discernment process and the purpose of this survey. In brief, this survey focuses on the “position description” for our next Senior Minister—a list of the skills, qualities, and experiences that we believe will enable Hancock to meet the Vision, Mission and Values statement adopted by the congregation in June 2019.

We ask you to reflect on the questions asked, to help us prioritize among the leadership characteristics we have identified, and to indicate what we may have missed.

To take the survey, please go to: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/8VKXDKS

To view a PDF of the survey, go to: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-HYrpwc1cioOjc-TR2knASeWen_fCIUM/view

We are eager to hear from you! Please complete the survey by July 1. The Discernment Team thanks you for your participation!

You are also invited to join the Discernment Team for discussion of the survey content at one of these small groups via Zoom:

The Building Reopening Committee is hard at work determining how and when we will be able to start using our building once more. One of the things we will need is masks to hand out to anyone who comes without

one. We are looking to make a basketful of cloth masks in adult, youth, and children sizes so that anyone who needs one can use it at church and then take it home to reuse. I have patterns, cloth, elastic, and thread for anyone that has time to make a few for Hancock over the next two months. If you have the time and inclination to help with this project, please contact [email protected] for the pattern and any other supplies you need.

In the time of coronavirus, Hancock Church continues to gather and be the church, but in new and surprising ways. We want to hear from you all—send us pictures and videos of what church-from-home looks for you! We’d love

to see kids joining David for the children’s moment, pictures of your communion elements, and folks in their Sunday best—even if that looks more like pajamas these days!

However you are joining us to encounter God, we would love to see it! We’ll be sharing some of your submissions with the Hancock community and featuring them in future worship services. To send your pictures and videos, upload them to:

Our Congregational Care Coordinator, Susan Clinkenbeard, will be finishing her work here at Hancock on Sunday, June 28. It has been an interesting year to be a student minister at Hancock. A wonderful learning experience for her, and her calm presence and thoughtful ministry has enriched us all

in the past year. As you know, she graduated in May with her Master of Divinity degree from Boston University School of Theology, and she will be continuing her preparation for ordination in the United Church of Christ.

To thank Susan for her work among us, we're inviting contributions to a gift for her that will help her meet expenses as her preparations continue. Contributions can be made online, clearly indicating "Susan's Gift" in the comment line. You may also give by text at 781-386-0866 (text the dollar amount followed by the word Susan), or by sending a check to the church office indicating "Susan's Gift" in the memo line. All contributions should be received by Friday, June 26, as we will present the gift during worship on June 28.

Work for the Common Goodla cOncepciOn's $10,000 cHallenge Has been Met!

We asked for your help to fulfill the annual fundraising goal of $10,000 through June 30 so Hancock can underwrite the work of Sustainable Harvest International (SHI) in La Concepcion. SHI is working with 29 families on issues of food sovereignty (feeding themselves), raising

incomes, farming sustainably and caring for the rain forest. Phase 1 has been completed. The other 4 Phases will be rolled out over the next four years. Hancock’s goal is to continue support through Phase 5.

We topped $10,000 after the recent Sunday Mission Partner offering was matched by an anonymous donor and an additional grant of $115 was made from Hancock’s Mission and Justice discretionary funds. This is important work that is being done through the support of Hancock members. Thank you!

UpDate On lexingtOn fOOD pantry DUring cOViD-19The Lexington Interfaith Food Pantry continues to serve members of our community facing food insecurity. This includes over 50 new families since the COVID-19 shut down has occurred. The Food Pantry director and her assistant have done an amazing job implementing safe practices for volunteers and clients alike. Thank you to all who have made

donations to the Food Pantry through Hancock's Mission Moment, food donations, and donations of paper and plastic bags. Normally shoppers bring their own bags, but in the new system the Food Pantry fills bags for shoppers and so must have about 225 paper and 150 plastic shopping bags per week during this 'stay at home' period.

If you can help with food donations, they can be left at the Stop and Shop in Lexington in the bin near the exit door. If you wish to make a monetary contribution, please write a check to Hancock Church with "Food Pantry" in the memo line.

These items are frequently requested by clients (take a snapshot for your next shopping trip!): VEGETARIAN SOUPS, CANNED FRUIT, CANNED CORN, CANNED PEAS, CANNED GREEN BEANS, PEANUT BUTTER CREAMY & CRUNCHY

Thank you! Please pray for those in our community who rely on strangers for nourishing food, and for the Food Pantry leadership who continually strive to get food to those in need within our communities. Questions may be directed to Susan at [email protected].

Build Community in a Diverse WorldtHank yOU fOr yOUr DOnatiOns tO place Of prOMise!

Several Hancock members have generously donated games, books, DVD's, a ping-pong table, an air hockey table, a pinball machine and more as entertainment supplies for the residents of Place of Promise. The Mission & Justice Team is delivering them this Saturday, just in time for them to

also be used by the Kids of Promise summer program for kids in the neighborhood. Many thanks to all the donors!

lUncHes fOr OUtDOOr cHUrcH Of caMbriDge: yOU can Help!We are providing 40 lunch bags every other Sunday for homeless folks who participate in the Outdoor Church in Cambridge. During the year Hancock middle school youth [JYO] make sandwiches and put together lunch bags once a month to be delivered to the Outdoor Church. Until we can all be together again at Hancock, Hancock adults are stepping up to

provide these Outdoor Church lunch bags, now every other week. With COVID, the need for food is even greater. We are working with Hancock youth to write notes to include in the lunch bags. How can you help? Help is needed for lunch bags for 7/5, 7/19, 8/2, 8/16, 8/30, 9/13. Are you interested in making 20 sandwiches? Or providing granola bars or water or cookies or fruit for each lunch bag? Sandwiches and other items are brought to the Hancock parking lot 7:20 a.m. on the designated Sunday morning. We assemble (with face masks, gloves, and social distancing) the lunch bags, which are then picked up and taken to the Outdoor Church. If you are interested in helping with the Outdoor Church lunches, please contact Daryl Battin (781-789-3763 / [email protected]), who will coordinate a schedule for the lunch bag contributions. Also contact her if you have lunch bag items to contribute which need to be picked up. Thank you so VERY much for your help – these lunches are an essential part of the day for Outdoor Church attendees. Another way you can help is with donation funds for the supply disposable face masks, for brown paper lunch bags, for $5 Dunkin Donut gift cards, for the granola bars and waters included with the Outdoor Church lunch bags. Donations for the Outdoor Church can be made to Hancock Church by check or online; please specify “Outdoor Church” on a check or in the comment field for online donations. Thank you again!

We welcome all who seek to know God.

We believe that, although we are many members, we are one body in Christ.

We have been called as well as challenged by God to respect and reconcile our differences.

We recognize and love each individual as a child of God.

We welcome, respect, support, and lovingly encourage people of every race, ethnicity, creed, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical and mental

ability to join us on our journey of faith.

The faith journey indeed calls Hancock Members not to be silent in the face of prejudice, injustice, and exclusion, but to express our faith, in word and deed,

for justice and inclusiveness for all humanity.

As Paul wrote in Galatians, “In Christ there is no longer Jew or Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for all are one...”
