Planners for the Second Annual Parke Gala, to be held sometime in 2007, aregoing to have a tough job to meet, let alone exceed, the outcomeof The Parke’s First Annual Gala. Weeks after 178 residents and guests at-

For the Committee, the reaction must have been espe-cially gratifying after months of intense planning for the event. The work was not unnoticed. “Three Cheers for The GalaCommittee. We had such a good time, we believe the eventshould be held more often than once a year,” said Bob andJoan Strauss of Fort Sumter North.

Right from the beginning when the idea for The Galawas first conceived, the thinking was that it would be anannual event and it was clear the next one was on the mindsof others who attended the first. “Looking forward to thenext one,” said Martha Graham of Montclair Court. “TheGala was absolutely wonderful and I want to thank all thosewho worked so hard to make it a success. The entertain-ment was really great, food was good and everyone was insuch a happy mood – just like a bunch of teenagers,” shesaid. “The Committee is to be commended.”

Jim and Chris Rebel of Annapolis Court said afterwards“Our feedback is nothing but positive. We had a terrifictime. It was very nice to see so many of our neighbors therewho also appeared to be having a good time.”

“It was a lovely evening, the food was good, the bandwas wonderful and the place was ideal,” said Sally Kohlerof Fort Sumter South.

“Our compliments to the committee for their work tomake The Gala the success it was,” Chatham Court’s Bernieand Joan Kessler said. “Of course, what made it great werethe fun-loving Parke residents. No wallflowers among us!”

If you were unable to attend, or want to revisit the memo-ries, a display about The Gala will be on view at The Club-house for the month of July.

Judy Boggs attended and afterwards penned a letter to Com-mittee Co-Chair Diane McGraw. She said she and her hus-band Bill had a “wonderful time—just the right mix of el-

Birdwatching In and Near The ParkeBy Jean Fry

A growing number of residents have become interestedin the local bird population and together, with my husbandLarry and I since we moved here in October 2004, we havefound 97 species within the confines of the community. Eventhough the habitat was disturbed during construction, thereare still birds to be found.

We have led three bird walks in The Parke and threetrips to other locations. OnFeb. 21, seven persons joinedus to visit the winter birding hotspots around Ocean City. Wecompiled a total of 50 speciesthat day including:

Canvasback, Gadwall,American Wigeon, EurasianWigeon (a rare visitor), North-ern Shoveler, Redhead, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup,Bufflehead, Long-tailed Duck(formerly Oldsquaw), andHooded and Red-breasted Merganser.

These species of beautiful waterfowl are only seen herefrom late fall to early spring, so you have to be willing to

brave the cold weather to reap the reward of seeing them.A local walk for early migrants April 21 produced 32

species either seen or heard. Highlights were a pair of BrownThrashers on Manklin Creek Road, early Chimney Swifts, and a Common Loon heard flying overhead.

Four residents traveled to Chincoteague National Wild-life Refuge on May 17 where a total of 49 species wereseen and 15 more were heard. Highlights there were Yel-low-billed Cuckoo, Eastern Kingbird, Piping Plovers on nests

on the beach, Tri-coloredHeron, Black-bellied Plo-ver, Glossy Ibis, Whim-brel, Dunlin, and RuddyTurnstone.

Joe and Betty Greenkept a watchful eye on apair of Great Horned Owlsin the winter and earlyspring in the area ofMontclair Court. Bettytook some pictures of “Mr.Hooter.”

In early May twoowlets fledged and several residents were able to view themperched on a pine tree limb for several days. It was fasci-

This spring and summer a lot of people wereasking “What is that bird that is calling so loudlyand incessantly in the woods at night? The answeris a Chuckwill’swidow. The bird is a member of thenightjar family related to a Whippoorwill, which isnot as common in the Ocean Pines area as theChuck-will’s-widow. “Chuck” arrives in mid-Apriland usually calls until about early July. It nests onthe ground in wet Southern pine and deciduouswoods. Active at night when it searches for insects,it roosts during the day on the ground or on a lowbranch and is easier heard than seen. -- Jean Fry

Jerry Cuomo of Federal Hill, who began painting in his20s, will be displaying drawings and paintings in July in theBerlin Library.

He specializes in watercolor, and likes to say that “sinceso many of my shirts and pants were ruined, switching towatercolor seemed the smart thing to do — it’s so easy toclean up using soap and water.”

Jerry says drawing is his favorite part of art and thattrying to get the proper proportions of objects is fun. “I drawforeground objects first and then draw the background, mostlydrawing a series of small lines, and when finished it amazesme when it actually looks like the subject,” he says.

“I love to draw just about everything especially: build-ings, boats, airplanes, cars, cartoon art, colorful flowers, beach scenes and clowns (because Lorraine collects them).Drawing people is also a love of mine but they never quitelook like the person.”

The Berlin Library is the permanent home of two of hisfavorite paintings, The Liberty Bell which Jerry painted in1976, the bicentennial year, and Snow White and her SevenLittle Friends, completed in 1996. He already has selectednumerous pieces for the display but said “I have over 100unfinished paintings and so who knows what I may finish bythen. Please come and take a peek.”

ALL ABOUT YOUBy Rosalie [email protected]

Blue skies and flags flying. What a great start to ourannual Memorial Day Picnic. The Social Commit-tee did its usual great job of setting up the perfect

picnic. From the decorations to the great food from Jimmy’sGrill, it was a day that was enjoyed by all.

The display of grandchildren in The Clubhouse show-case was great fun as we all tried to guess who those hand-some young men who served in the armed forces were. Ourthanks go to Roy Bieber for organizing this wonderful ex-hibition. Roy has a birthday coming up, on June 29, anotherreason to thank him for a job well done.

Long happy marriages are all around us in The Parke.Short and blissful, too, as with Murray and MarleneLustig, who will celebrate their third anniversary July 18.Joan and Dennis Escher celebrated their 40th anniver-sary over Memorial Day weekend. Their three children andseveral members of their original wedding party were at asurprise cocktail and dinner that Dennis planned. What agreat husband. No wonder they have been together so long.

On June 30th Carol and Don Wilson celebrated their50th anniversary (and earlier in the year their 70th Birth-days). To mark these momentous dates, they traveled toGreece and Turkey, climbed up to the Acropolis, convenedwith the Oracle atop Mount Parnassus, toured the GreekIsles and, visiting neighboring Turkey, were bowled over bythe beautiful city of Istanbul. What a great trip for such ahappy occasion.

Tom and Carole Weber celebrated their 38th on June17, Parke style, with friend over dinner at the newly openedVineyard in the Pines restaurant. The next weekend theywere on their way back to New Jersey to celebrate thewedding of their son, Tom, Jr., to Lisa Tarriff.

Congratulations to Dot and Ed Pinto on the marriageof their son, Craig, to Michelle Romano. The entire Pintofamily attended the happy event, and then many came to theshore for a family reunion.

Mark your calendar for Saturday, July 22. That’s whenwe will have our Fiesta Happy hour at The Clubhouse, 5 to7pm. Tickets will be sold Saturday, July 8 and Monday,July 10. The Saturday ticket sales will give weekend andpart time residents an opportunity to purchase tickets. Lookfor the flyers that will be posted to give you further informa-tion on this fun affair.

Glad to see Howard and Flora Schwartz back fromKey West, and to see Howard looking so well.

Be sure to drive carefully through The Parke, as in thesummer we have many children visiting and they are on theirbikes and skateboards.

Everyone who was there raves about the Gala. It was ahuge success. The music and food were outstanding, andeveryone was looking great in their festive attire. I also heardthat the table decorations were fantastic. Diane McGrawand her committee are to be congratulated for a job welldone.

That’s all for this month. Please keep the news coming.Call me at 410-208-0455 or e-mail [email protected] Rosalie

PARKE HAPPENINGSConcert ReviewMariner String Quartet CharmsParke Residents and GuestsBy Dave Stevens

The Mariner String Quartet, in what has become a near-quarterly event, appeared in The Parke Great Room Sun-day, June 11 to perform a program of Bach, Mozart andDebussy. These four very talented professional musiciansare all principals of the Mid-Atlantic Symphony and alsoplay in many other orchestras and ensembles. All have ex-tensive musical backgrounds and education that includesdegrees from Yale, Princeton and Cambridge and advancedstudies at the Peabody, New England and American (Paris)Conservatories.

The Mariner’s programs always have some interestingaspects that surprise and please even veteran concert-goers.Opening Sunday’s concert was the Brandenburg Concerto#2, originally written by Bach for a full chamber orchestra. This arrangement for string quartet by Mathew Naughtincaptured the full power of the original, while at the sametime allowing the listener to appreciate the contributions ofthe individual instruments.

Arrangements by Naughtin arebecoming a feature in our Parke con-certs. They have had the effect of al-lowing us to hear old, familiar music (classical and popular)in a new and different way. Michael Strauss, the Marinerspokesman, told me that he and Naughtin became friendsafter playing together in a string quartet in Oklahoma and asa result he became familiar with Naughtin’s arrangements. We are fortunate to be the beneficiary of this acquaintance.

The audience of about 40 people appeared to enjoy theconcert from beginning to end. The relatively intimate settingand excellent acoustics of the Great Room can let one imag-ine that they are in an 18th century nobleman’s drawing room.Listening to the musicians from a few feet away is a far dif-ferent experience than that of a concert hall. At the sametime it is all informal and fun. The “Mariners” have been hereoften enough now that it almost seems as though they aretalented offspring returning to impress their parents. If clas-sical music has never been your cup of tea you owe yourselfthe experience of trying it at least once in this setting.

The only disappointment of the day was the size of theaudience. This is a busy time of year, and many Parke resi-dents are involved with weddings, graduations and travel.

On the other hand all of the quartet members have to travelconsiderable distances to get here, and the amount they re-ceive for their performance becomes marginal with an audi-ence of only forty.

The efforts of Mimi Ward and Jim Young in selling tick-ets outside The Parke (they set up a booth during a Julliard

Community Church appearance)saved the concert from being can-celled. Yet when I spoke to some

of the approximately ten guests they all thought it was fan-tastic and said they knew many more people who wouldhave come had they been aware of it.

To avoid this problem in the future we will try to workwith the Mariners and the MSO to set a schedule further inadvance. Parke residents will still be given a week to pur-chase their tickets. After that they will be sold “as-avail-able” to the broader community. An audience of 60 to 70would be optimum. Hopefully, we will be able to continuethis very unique benefit of Parke living well into the future.

Small WorldA Boss is a Boss, Then A Neighbor

This month’s Small World comes to us from PennyMiller of Central Parke East

One day shortly after moving to The Parke in Septem-ber 2004, I was participating in the Aqua Exercise class, which is where you can find out almost anything about whatis going on in the community and who is involved. All of thewomen are very friendly, but one in particular, Eve, startedchatting with me and said she was from Montgomery County,Maryland.

She said she had lived in Garrett Park and her husbandhad worked at GEICO. I told her that I was from Bethesda-Rockville and had worked at GEICO, too, when I was 20and just recently married. She said her husband was in theadvertising department and I said I was, too.

I told her my boss was a man named Tom Exarhakisand she said HE WAS HER HUSBAND!! I had been hispersonal secretary for about 6 months, one of many I imag-ine, because when I finally met Tom again, after 40 years, heasked me ”Was I a good boss?”

Do you have a Small World story to share? Theseare fun little stories that lots of Parkees comment onduring the month. If you have one, send it to me [email protected].

Birdwatching at a health fair, you ask? It is a fun hobby;it is relaxing. It is good therapy to get out into the naturalworld and it keeps your mind active because you need towork on identification, field marks, calls, and behaviors.Birdwatching also requires eye/ear/hand coordination.

If you’ve been considering birdwatching as a hobby, whynot start now? You’ll find that we’re a very friendly group. Please contact us by phone at 410-208-4269 or e-mail at:ovenbird35 @mchsi.com
