President’s Message

Where’d the Year Go?

The Canter is published in January, April, July, and October

each year. Deadlines for submission are the 15th of the

month immediately prior to publication. Please e-mail

articles to [email protected].

It’s September and the seasons are changing. It is now the end of our riding season and we have Convention up and coming. It has been an awesome year with all of the shows and rides that have happened this year. To say the least, it has been a busy year.

We will be holding our 4th quarter Board Meeting on October 8th at the Kittitas Valley Event Center in Ellensburg. Please watch the WSH Facebook page for time. All members are invited to attend the governing of your organization.

Not only do we have this Board Meeting in October but Convention is coming November 11-13 and being held at the Howard Johnson in Yakima. We would love to see you there! Further information on registration, meals, and how to reserve your room are included inside this Canter issue. Please be sure that when you reserve your room to say that you are with WSH to get our discounted rate.

At Convention, we will be voting in new officers for Treasurer, Vice President, and Director Positions 1, 3, 5, 7, as well as voting on new bylaw changes. If you have a nomination please contact Gloria Marley at [email protected] or myself at chris.thompson.wsh @hotmail.com.

As for those in the different Divisions, voting on proposed rule changes for 2017 and election of Division Directors happens at Convention as well. Proposed changes for each of the major divi-sions and the bylaws are included in this issue of the Canter for your review. Some of the proposed bylaw changes include reorgan-ization of the Executive Board and Full Board as well as realign-ment of Zone boundaries. Again, please make plans to attend Con-vention and help shape this organization’s future...it is YOUR or-ganization.

I have had no luck in finding an Awards Committee Chair for this year’s Convention, so please contact me to nominate worthy indi-viduals for Man of the Year (awarded to an outstanding WSH member who has given unselfishly of himself or herself for the ben-efit of others), the Lifetime Achievement Award (awarded to a member that has dedicated themselves to years of service to WSH), Junior Inspirational (awarded to a youth that has been an inspira-

tion to their fellow peers), and Club of the Year. The criteria for these awards is included on Page 10.

Looking forward to seeing you Convention!

- - Chris Thompson

We have been sharing the 2015 Youth Merit essays with you during the past issues of this year’s Canter. Emma McLaughlin’s essay on the American Paint Horse was featured in the January Canter. Nicole Grove’s essay on the Amer-ican Cream Draft Horse was featured in the April Canter. Connor McLaugh-lin’s essay on the Blazer Horse was featured in the July Canter. Our final 2015 essay on the subject of “Horse Breeds of American Origin” was presented by Court-ney Stockman.

“This year I chose to do the amazing breed of Quarter Horses or you may know them as the ‘World's fastest Athlete’. They got the name ‘Quarter Horse’ because they excelled at sprinting a quarter of a mile faster than any other horse. They can achieve speeds up to 55 MPH over a short distance. They are known for their heavily muscled body, their disposition, and their athletic abilities. They also have a broad chest and a powerful hindquarter. The feet of a Quarter Horse is considered to be rather small for their size, a horse standing between 14.3 hands and 16 hands can look ‘rather chunky’. They are known to have a smaller and refined head with a straight profile and a wide forehead.

The Quarter Horse is one of the most popular and oldest breeds in America today. This breed's roots go back to the Arab, Turk, and Barb breeds. The beginning of the breeding started in 1611 with very few select stallions. They were brought to North America by Spanish explorers and traders. The horses the Spanish brought to Amer-ica in the 1700s were Thoroughbreds mixed with the Chickasaw breed to make the Quarter Horse breed. Quarter Horses were a big part in the colonist’s lives. Not only did they help the colonist in daily lives, they also carried pony express riders and rushed doctors to patients in desperate need. About the time Jamestown was built, they started racing Quarter Horses. Well some might wonder if the Quarter Horse breed has a ‘triple crown’ like Thoroughbreds do and the answer is, ‘Yes’. Their races consist of the Kansas Futurity in June, the Rainbow futurity in July, and the All-American Futurity held on Labor Day Weekend; all are held at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico. These races usually end up being close with photo finishes and the time is rounded to the nearest 1/100 of a second.

The American Quarter Horse Association was founded in Amarillo, Texas. The first horse to be registered as a Quarter Horse was a horse called Wimpy. Peppy, the second horse to be registered, was a success in breeding and showing. Leo was known for his ‘sizzling speed’ then becoming one of the greatest sires of all time. P-234 was a sire named King. His conformation set the standards for Quarter Horse judging whereas one of his colts, Poco Bueno, was an outstanding cutting horse. He became a ‘blur of lighting-fast speed’. Both King and Poco Bueno were destined to become one of the most famous father/son duos. The American Quarter Horse Association has over 5 million horses registered worldwide.

Quarter Horses are known to be very versatile and have a good tempers; especially good for beginners. You can see Quarter Horses anywhere from the dressage ring to team roping in a rodeo to working cows on the ranch to helping the ranchers move cows. These horses have a natural instinct to work with cows and excel in tie-down roping and team roping. They also excel in speed events such as my favorite barrel racing; still dominating in these events today. These horses have superior intelligence and a willingness to work. The intelligence they have make them a good reining horse. You can find people doing sliding stops, lead changes, and spins with no reins. So if you are sliding around a turn or cutting a cow off you maybe on a great American Quarter Horse.

CONVENTION 2016

This year’s Convention is scheduled for November 11-13 in Yakima. The host hotel is the Howard Johnson where we have a limited number of hotel rooms held for our members at the special rate of $76 per night plus tax (single or double occupan-cy). These rooms will not last long and last year a few of our members had to find lodging elsewhere as the hotel was at 100% capacity. When reserving (call 509.452.6511), be sure to tell them that you are with Washington State Horsemen to get the special room rate. We are required to have a minimum of 15 rooms Thursday Night, 30 rooms Friday Night, and 40 rooms Saturday Night in order to meet the conditions of our agreement with the hotel. Please be sure that you CALL the hotel to make your reservations. If you do it through the Internet or through another service, WSH will not receive the credit for your room.

The registration fees for this year’s Convention are the same as last year and thus those members registering on or before October 31 will see a savings in the registration fee.

Each Zone is asked to donate a centerpiece or $25 to purchase a centerpiece. The items will be raffled off at the end of Sat-urday's dinner and the funds generated will be earmarked for the Youth Merit program. In preparation for Convention, it’s never too early to begin lining up vendors for this year’s event. If you know of someone that would be interested in partici-pating as a vendor, please contact Convention Chair Bonnie Schuchman at [email protected]. Additionally, if you know of a company that would like to provide promotional items (pens, magnets, etc.) for the Convention welcome bags, please let Bonnie know. We will need approximately 100 of the items.

In order to keep our Convention costs low, we are asking members to help cover the cost of printing our Official Convention Program by obtaining ads for this year’s program at the rates listed below and e-mailing them to [email protected] on of before October 15. It could be an ad listing your club’s 2017 show dates. It could be an ad listing your horse’s accom-plishments in 2016. It could be a special thank you to someone that has helped you this past show season. It could be your local hay dealer / tack store / veterinarian / etc.

The final schedule for this year’s Convention is found on Page 11. We encourage all members to put the full week-end on their calendars and join in the fun at the hotel with other WSH Members or out and about, in and around Ya-kima. Here are a few of the things that you could take in while visiting Yakima: Yakima Valley Museum (complete with soda fountain shop), Yakima Electric Railway Museum, McAllister Museum of Aviation, Yakima Area Arboretum, Fort Simcoe State Park, Yakima Greenway, Yakima Sportsman State Park, Meadowbrook Family Fun Center (miniature golf, arcade, and more), Casino Caribbean and Legend’s Casino, and Wine Tasting and Tours (several lo-cations). Yakima abounds in museums and attractions, shopping, outdoor recreation (hiking trails, fishing, hunting, mountain-eering, wildlife viewing, scenic vistas, mountain biking and cycling), and locations for amazing food and wine. World-class wineries and wine country events help make the Yakima Valley a food and wine destination. Willing to drive 18 miles towards Toppenish? The Yakama Nation Cultural Center is the best place to explore the important cultural influence of the Yakama Nation. The facility, which is open daily, is comprised of the Yakama Nation Museum, Cultur-al Center Gift Shop, the Heritage Inn Restaurant, the Heritage Theater and the Yakama Nation Library.

Page 26. Rule 7 / Section 2 #3 (Under the Point Schedule). Move the Bold Italic words above the “EXCEPTION STATEMENT”. The bold should be ahead of the exception. There is a suggestion to delete the info from this area because it is elsewhere.

Page 49. Rule 13 / Section 4 #5 (Arabian Western Pleasure) – Re-move the word “trot” in “Jog/Trot”.

Pages 60-61. Precision Driving. The drawn courses printed show numbers by the maneuvers. I feel they either need to be removed or made more clear. For example, Course 1 on Page 61 - the 4 looks like a cone and some exhibitors have gone off course be-cause they thought it was a cone.

Page 74. Rule 19, #19 - Remove “Trot” from the list of walk, jog, trot, extended jog, etc.

Page 75. Rule 19, #23 (Western Eq Green Rider W/J) - It stated same specs as Limit Rider W/T change the “T” to “J” because it’s Western.

Page 75. Rule 19, #24 (Western Equitation Green Rider) - Remove “trot” and add “Lope”.

The following areas are still worded “Stock Seat” and should be changed to “Western Seat” to be in line with the rest of the equitation division:

Page 69, Rule 19, Section 1, #9 Page 70, Rule 19, Section 2, #1 – Under Joelle Burk Page 75, Rule 19, #25 - Under Equitation 10 and under Page 75, Rule 19, #26 - Under Leadline Equitation Page 76, Rule 19, #27 - Under Walk/Whoa Equitation Page 99, Rule 30, Section 2, #1 - Under Vern Burk Memorial Page 99, Rule 30, Section 2, #2 - Under Dan Story Memorial Page 103, Rule 30, #19 - Under Walk/Trot E/W Pl 10 & under

Page 92. Rule 28 / Section 3 #3 (Quarter Horse Western Pleas-ure) - Remove “Trot“ from “jog-trot”.

Page 99. Rule 30 / Section 3 #2 (Western Pleasure Colored Horses) - Add “To be shown according to Breed type at a walk, jog/intermediate gait and lope, both ways of the ring on a reasonably loose rein, without undue restraint. Special emphasis on the walk.” This will make it the same class description as the Non-Colored as well as including the 40% for color.

Page 99. Rule 30 / Section 3 #3 - Remove “Trot” from “Jog/Trot”

Page 101. Rule 30 / Section 3 #9 (Jim Webb) - Remove “Trot” from “Jog-Trot”.

Page 101. Rule 30 / Section 3 #10 - Remove “Entries shall be penalized for being on the wrong lead”. This is a W/J class.

Page 102. Rule 30 / Section 3, #11,12 and 13 - Remove “Trot”. Should just read “Jog” because they are western classes.

Page 102. Rule 30 / Section 3 #11 - Remove “Or Canter”.

Page 102. Rule 30 / Section 3 #12 - Remove “Entries shall be penalized for being on the wrong lead”. This is a W/J class.

Page 102. Rule 30 / Section 3 #13 - Remove “or canter”.

All classes restricted to walk/trot or walk/jog be restricted to only those horse/rider combinations that will not compete in walk/trot/canter or walk/jog/lope classes. In other-words, no cross entry would be allowed. A rider would need to declare prior to the beginning of the season that they would be riding in either “Walk/trot-Walk/jog” or the advanced classes, or the advanced classes. If they felt that during the season, they had advanced enough to move up to the W/J/L or W/T/C classes, they be allowed to do so, “freezing” their w/j points, and start-ing over for the advanced class points. A rider could place in both divisions in the same year, but only for the “one” year they make the transfer to the advanced riding classes. Submit-ted by Willie Hansen. The above proposal would affect many places in the rulebook. When asked for confirmation as to whether this applied to ‘limit horse and limit rider classes’, Willie’s reply was “If the class allows canter or lope, I want it to be completely separate from any walk/trot or walk/jog classes so that there is no cross-entry allowed between the two.”

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE: It’s been an incredible year for the Horse Show Divi-sion. The east side of the mountain saw an increase in horse show numbers and the Jerry Prigge Finals topped an all-time record of 228 exhibitors for the west side. Our committees have spent countless hours meeting and discussing ways to increase yearend sign-up participation and communication with our members. Working together, this group of WSH members has brought the Division forward into a more solvent financial position and continues to look at suggestions and ideas to continue moving forward to protect the viability of the Division. The Year End Awards show (YEA) was held in August in conjunction with the Zone Invita-tional. This new format quickly caught on and we are excited to continue this show at the Tacoma Unit the first weekend in August for 2017. We hope that this show will be a tool to increase participation at the Zone level. At Convention, the Horse Show Division meeting will be held in a new format. We will meet in the morning to go over past business and to read and discuss the new rule changes. We will then break for lunch to visit, contemplate and take time to think through the proposed changes. After lunch we will vote on the changes presented. Clin-ics will be held the following day as we hope that each of you will attend. Clinics will be in a different format as well so come join us and be part of the change! It is with much sadness that I share the passing of a dear friend Jole Birdsell. Jole was the backbone of the Northeast Zone Horse Show Division for years. I will miss her words of wisdom and sharp wit. She was a wealth of information and my history book. I have asked her daughter, Jole Sue Chick, to share the amazing life of her Mom with us and when she is ready we will share it in the Canter. I am honored to have called her my friend and cherish her family; Jole Sue and Al. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers — Lisa Gardner.

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE: Well we had a great Championship Show in August and saw the last of our 2016 calendar year shows that count for the 2017 season play out this past weekend. Convention is quickly coming and I would love to see all of you there; this is our only meeting of the year and we’ll be voting on rule changes, renewing judge’s/timer’s cards, and hold ing an informational clinic. Saddle winners are required to be at the Saturday evening awards ceremony but we would love to have you attend the meeting as well. We also need our sponsors appreciated so please remember to drop a thank you card and support their businesses so that we can continue to be able to count on their support to us. Hope to see you all soon, enjoy your four legged friends, and if you have questions...let me know -- Melissa Stockman.

2016 PROPOSED RULE CHANGES

The following rule change proposals were e-mailed to the Director, Melissa Stockman, on or before September 10 per the WSHGD rulebook. Only WSH members attending Convention will be permitted to bring their proposals to the floor at the annual meeting and have them voted upon at the Saturday morn-ing meeting at Convention on November 12.

Page 3. Contestant Numbers - Add following sentence after 1st sentence and before 3rd sentence, “In the case of Cowhide Race, Rescue Race, and Bareback Relay, at least one member of the team must have a permanent number registered on the horse.” Proposed by Jessie McLaughlin.

Page 7. Section 12 (Moving a Course) - Change to read, "If moved for safety reasons, riders may choose to either rerun or keep their first time. If moved for initial wrong measurement, all riders must rerun. Riders having to rerun will be given up to two runs or until they have had two (2) No Times. In the event that a rider had a no time in the initial run, should they also get a No time in their second run, they would be considered a no time. A rider that had a clean run initially be given a subsequent ride if they happen to No Time their second run." Proposed by Gabe Valdez.

Page 8. Disqualifications #10 - Change to read, “While mounted, circling or turning any marker considered part of the course before officially entering the course by crossing the starting line. Exception: In Figure 8, rider may circle or turn the pole prior to entering the course. If the rider, in circling or turning the pole prior to crossing the starting line, knocks down the pole, rider will receive a no-time.” Proposed by Jessie McLaughlin.

Page 10. ABCD Classification Rules #1 – Change to read “Classification will be assigned to a horse on the basis of the horse's three fastest times set since August 1, 1968 at W.S.H. Western Games Division approved shows. If a horse is ridden by more than one rider, all times run will be used towards horse’s classification and all of the horse’s riders will then be classified the same regardless of age or ability with the exception of Buckaroo riders who may continue to compete in Buckaroo.” Proposed by Jessie McLaughlin.

Page 10. ABCD Classification Rules #9 - Change to read, "Times earned at closed or restricted shows (i.e. Washington State Championship Show) will be used for reclassification and will count towards qualifying times for the new season." Proposed by Gabe Valdez.

Page 22. Last Show of Season - Change to read, “Arena sheets to be scanned/e-mailed or faxed sent overnight mail to the State Times Keeper within 24 hours of show ending as well as sent First Class mail within the same 24 hours. Expenses for mailing to be reimbursed by the WSHGD. Clubs will be assessed $100.00 for failing to com-ply with show results deadline.” Proposed by Jessie McLaughlin.

Page 31. Special Awards - Change 2nd and 3rd sentences to read, “High Point Award winners must attend the annual division meeting and the banquet portion of Convention in order to receive their award in person or send / appoint a representative on their behalf. Should a High Point Award winner or their representative fail to be in attendance, the award will be presented to the runner-up. Proposed by Melissa Stockman.

Housekeeping. Change $10 per day approval fee to $15 per day. Change in fee approved in 2014 but book still contains several locations with the incorrect amount.

CLUB OF THE YEAR

Each year many fine, active clubs compete for this award. Be sure to follow directions carefully so that you will not be eliminated because necessary information was not included, or directions followed. It is hoped that all clubs will compete so that each zone will have a potential winner as “Club of the Year”. If your club competed for this award in the past, but was not selected, do not be discouraged. Try again because often the competition is very

close with many fine, active clubs throughout the State.

Each year at the Annual Awards Banquet, one club is recognized as the Outstanding Club of the Year. To compete for this award, the club is to submit its qualifications for judging in letter form. Letters for consideration shall be in duplicate, with the name of the club appearing only on the origi-nal. Both copies shall be submitted to the Awards Chair. A committee com-posed of the Chair and at least two impartial members shall determine the Club most deserving of the award. This award is to be presented at the Annual Awards Banquet at Convention. Selection of the outstanding club will be based on the following. All letters to be considered MUST contain

information in all categories for the current year.

1. Is your club’s membership 100% Washington State Horsemen?

2. Ways in which your club supports meetings, officers, judges, stewards,

timers, record keepers, committees, etc. at Zone and State levels.

3. Club sponsored activities to develop or support the Youth Merit Pro-gram; Educational (Clinics, etc.); Horse Activities other than shows or gym-

khanas; Social Activities, etc.

4. Club sponsored activities in general, other than listed in item three

above; Educational, Committee Service, Social, etc.

JESSELYN ROEHR LIFETIME

Horsemen based on the following criteria:

1. At least a 10 year WSH member.

2. Has served at State level (may include Board of Directors, Committee Chair, appointed or elected), State Judge, Stew-

ard, Timer, etc.

JUNIOR INSPIRATIONAL AWARD

Is there a young person in your area who has been an inspi-

ration to their fellow peers? A special perpetual trophy,

sponsored by the former Mayor Larson of Yakima, will be

presented to a junior WSH member who has gone out of his

or her way to provide assistance or help to others and who

through their personal endeavors has truly been an inspira-

tion. The nominee should be one who has entered horse

events, though need not be a top winner.

The letter of nomination is to include the nominee’s name,

age, address, club if applicable, and agency through which

he pays his WSH dues. Also, the reason for selection, neces-

sary references for theses reasons, and the signature of the

nominating agency, i.e., family, club, zone, officer, etc.

A committee composed of the awards committee chair and

at least two impartial members shall determine the youth

most deserving of this award. This award is to be presented

at the Annual Awards Banquet at Convention.

MAN OF THE YEAR AWARD

The “Man of the Year” award is a memorial to Twin Benson and is presented each year to an outstanding WSH member who has given unselfishly of himself or herself for the benefit of others. This is the spirit which made Twin beloved by all who were privileged to know him. ed at the Annual Awards Banquet at Convention.

There are many outstanding WSH members and usually the decision is very difficult because of the fine qualities of so many hard working, active members. If in the past you have submitted a resume of someone you think deserving of this

award, but who was not selected, please resubmit the name and resume.

To qualify for State Awards, you must have completed three rides under two different judges. Riders were responsible for submitting their own test scores to the Dressage Points Keeper before October 1. Percentage sheets along with a complete and legible copy of the front of your tests (making sure that the show name, date of show, judge's signature and score are listed on the front cover) must be sent to Points Keeper Gena Loper at PO Box 3555 - Post Falls, ID 83877. She can be reached at 208.660.0966 or via e-mail at [email protected] should you have questions.

Lower Puget Sound Dressage Club had a great show season. We held eight shows from May to September with a total of 465 entries which is an average of 58 rides per show. We were privileged to have Diane Royce conduct a Ride and Review Clinic in conjunction with our July show. At the Summervale Dressage Festival on August 6, I, Mary Brady and Shatar, rode our Centurion Ride and were inducted into the USDF’s elite club - The Dressage Foundation's Century Club. The Century Club recognizes dressage riders and horses with a combined age total of 100 years or more. We are team #254.

Hope to see you at the WSH Convention in Yakima in November. For more infor-mation regarding the Dressage Division, contact Dressage Director Mary Brady at [email protected] or via phone at 360-894-5855.

The Cascade Zone had a fun and busy summer and is gearing up for an excit-

ing fall. Eight Cascade riders represented the zone at the YEA "battle of the

zones" show with several more supporting fans. Cascade Zone won the award

for best stall decorations and took home a wheelbarrow full of trophies (see

below). The Zone has had great attendance at monthly meetings, planning the

Cascade Schooling Show Series which will entail five fall and winter shows at

Enumclaw Expo Center. Classes will include English and Western Pleasure

classes, reining, trail and more. The series kicks off on Saturday, October 22,

with a pre-show Halloween party on the evening of Friday, October 21st. Visit

TRAILS AND PLEASURE Changes Coming in 2017 - Let Your Voice Be Heard at Convention

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE: Happy Fall! I’m not sure where time has gone but it sure has slipped away. I hope everyone had a great spring and summer riding season and kept track of those hours. The 2015-2016 WSH Trails and Pleasure season ended on September 30. I would like all hours turned in by October 15, giving us enough time to get the points and awards done before the WSH Convention (November 11-13) in Yakima at the Howard Johnson. This year at Convention we will be voting on several proposals discussed at last year’s Convention:

1. Increasing the yearly fee from $10.00 per division to $15.00. The sign-up fee has not increased in the last 15 years although the cost of awards has. 2. Hours start from the sign-up date (USPS postmark date). Exceptions to be made for the 2016-2017 season giving everyone a 60-day back date. For example, If your

sign-up form is postmarked March 30 then your hours will count as of January 30. After the 2016-2017 season if your signup is dated March 30 then your hours would start as of March 30.

3. The Trails and Pleasure’s “season” is different than most WSH Divisions. In order for hours to continue to count from the fall, riders will have until March 1 of the fol-lowing year to send in a copy of their updated WSH card. For the 2016/17 year, updated 2017 WSH cards would be due by 3/1/17.

This year we will be voting in a new WSH Trails and Pleasurer Director. Although I have enjoyed my time as your WSH Trails and Pleasure Director, I feel that it is time for new blood to step in. We are a small group compared to HSD or Games, but you are a great group of horse people. I really feel that you need better representation and a louder voice. The job itself is not hard but whomever takes the position needs to be committed to going to the quarterly WSH Board meetings, promoting the WSH Trails and Pleasure Division, writing articles for both the WSH Canter and e-Canter, and continuing to build the Awards Program. If you or someone you know may be interested please feel free to contact me via either e-mail or phone at the contact information below. Happy trails to you all and be safe out there -- Michelle Fitzhugh.

For more information contact the Trails and Pleasure Division Chair:

Michelle Fitzhugh at [email protected] / 509.869.5795

Members desiring a change in the WSH Bylaws were asked to submit their proposals in writing to Bylaws Committee Chair Willie Hansen at [email protected] no later than Septem-ber 1, 2016. The following proposed bylaw changes were received by the deadline and having been published in the October issue of the Canter will then be brought forward for dis-cussion during the Board Meeting on Friday, November 11 beginning at 7:00 p.m. All WSH Members that have registered for Convention are invited to attend. The Bylaws Committee (consisting of those attending the meeting on November 11) will review, amend (if needed), and then prepare a recommendation to be considered by the membership assembled in the Annual Meeting on Sunday (November 13). At the Annual Meeting on Sunday, the membership may adopt recommendations by passing them by a two-thirds majority.

ARTICLE III (Membership) / SECTION 1 (Eligibility): Add to the end of the paragraph, “Membership shall run from January 1 to December 31 of each concur-rent year with membership renewal / sign-up to begin (or be applied) on January 1 of each year.”

ARTICLE VI (Board of Directors) / SECTION 1: Change to read, “The Board of Directors shall consist of all members of the Executive Board, a Director the President from each Zone, and Division recognized in Article VIII, Section 3, and Committee Chairpersons and the Washington State Horse Council President or their designated representative as printed in the Canter or on the website.

ARTICLE VIII (Clubs, Zones, and Divisions) / Section 2e: Add paragraph to read, “The ten Zones include “Canal, Cascade-Evergreen, North Central, North-east, Northwest Border, Olympic, Prairie, Puget Sound, South Central, and Zone One”. The realignment would include moving Southwest Border Zone into Prairie Zone, merging Cascade and Evergreen Zones into one zone renaming it the “Cascade-Evergreen Zone”, and moving Pacific Zone into Olympic Zone.

ARTICLE VIII (Clubs, Zones, and Divisions) / SECTION 3 (Divisions): Delete Paragraph 2 beginning “Minor Divisions…” to sub-section (a)3. Also delete sub-section (e) and change sub-section (f) to read, “(f) Minor Divisions shall include All Other Breeds, Appaloosa, Arabian, Buckskin, Draft, Dressage, Driving, Eng-lish, Hunter/Jumper, Miniature Horse, Morgan, Mustang, Paint, Palomino, Paso, Pinto, Pony/POA, Quarter Horse, Reining, Saddlebred, Tennessee Walker, Welsh, Western, and Equitation Divisions and shall consist of those members interested in these particular breeds and disciplines whose duties shall be to pro-pose rules and regulations to the Horse Show Division.”

ARTICLE VIII (Clubs, Zones, and Divisions) / SECTION 3 (Divisions): Change “b” to read, “All Divisions shall have the right to send a Director to the Board of Directors. If such In the event that a Major Division Director is unable to attend meetings of the Board of Directors, the division shall send a duly qualified alter-nate. All Divisions shall furnish to the Secretary the names and addresses of their Directors and officers.”

Kali or better known as “Kiss My Foxy Eight” is a 5-year-old Buckskin Overo registered both APHA and PtHA. Her Sire is “Fox Force” a smutty buckskin registered both AQHA and ABRA. His lines include Sucha Fistful, Freeway Foxy and all the way back to Moon Deck. Her Dam is “My Dream Catcher” an 80% white Overo. Her lines include The Dream Maker, Skipa Heathen, and all the way back to Peppy San and Poco Tivio.

I was looking for a solid buckskin preferably a buttermilk to replace my great geld-ing “Opies Golden Sun”. I always chose horses that their pedigree is not all one particular type. I want an all-around horse so I wanted bloodlines from every type. I had been looking for over a year, not finding anything I would even consider looking at. I saw a lot of buckskins but they had bad conformation or minds to match. Then my friend Elaine Sink had a solid smutty buckskin weanling filly for sale so I messaged her and told her what I was really looking for and she said I do have a buttermilk buckskin weanling filly but she is a Paint. I thought to myself hmmm, let‘s at least see what she is. I asked her several questions. How much white does she have? Who are her parents so I can go look on all breed pedigree? Do you have any pictures? Well she sent me some pictures…dang she’s cute, has strong conformation and is a buff little girl. Dang she’s bred just like I like them, a little bit of halter, racing and cow. Dang she doesn’t have that much white, just enough. I then watched the Pinto World Show to see if that was the direction I wanted to go instead of the buckskin circuit. I looked for buckskins to see what their white looked like and tried to envision what Kali would look like when she was older. The rest is history, I messaged Elaine and we made a deal. I picked her up as a 4-month-old, never saw her in person. I got a message for Elaine’s daughter Kristy as she was loading her up to meet us. WOW did you know she has markings on her knees (which are black)? I replied with NO! Take a picture! Yep she was shedding and she had matching white marks on her knees. I thought to myself well this is either going to be really bad or really good. Well it turned out to be a good thing. I get compliments on her knee markings everywhere we go. She turned into the replacement I was looking for. In 2 years of showing she has earned 875 Open points in Pinto; 260 of those in Halter. Earned her Open Championship, Certificate of Ability, Achievement in Versatility, 9 ROM’s, 1 ROE and 233 Amateur points. In 2015, she was Washington State Horseman’s “A” System High Score English, Western and Driving horse, first horse to win all three for the “A” system. Cascade Pinto High Point Stock Type, Western Washington Pinto Association High Point Stock Type and Oregon Pinto Association Champion Junior Horse English and Reserve Champion Junior Horse Western. Pacific Coast Pinto Zone One Show Open Junior Horse Super Horse and Western Pleasure Futurity Champion. This year we have won High Point Open Stock Type at every Pinto show we have attended. We ventured out and went to a few Paint shows and earned our first ROM in Halter.

A few fun tidbits about Kali. Her registered name is from the number eight shape on her left hip. She loves beer, drinks it right from the can. I do not feed her any grain. She is on alfalfa grass mix hay my parents grow and “Special Blend” pellets. She really is that big on her own. She lives outside which makes keeping her hair coat short really fun and she really hates mud.

Thanks to Kirsten Tharp for this bio on her Paint Mare Kiss My Foxy Eight a.k.a. “Kali”. For more information regarding the Paint Horse Division, please contact Division Director Terri Lehnertz at [email protected].

Here it is September already, and the show season is nearly over. Most of the big breed shows are over, except for Sport Horse and US Nationals. Here at home, our little AHCCW show last month in Wenatchee was a success, with happy exhibitors. The change of venue was hard on the show committee but we had a great time too. I’d like to thank the Horse Show Division once again for letting us have B System approval and I hope that some of our exhibitors got their points! I’m including a photo of the WSH display that I set up at the show.

The silent auction was great, as was the potato feed and ice cream social. All were held indoors in the arena, which was handy, as the wind came up in the afternoon and things got pretty brisk. One little girl went home with stars in her eyes after winning the custom-made show horse stable at the silent auction, complete with horse and little girl doll to love him!

I haven’t seen any figures yet on what classes filled or not, but I’m hoping it will be better than last year. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at the Horse Show meeting, the Breed Breakfast on Satur-day, and the banquet and awards Saturday night. I hope everyone took advantage of the early bird signup discounts!

I hope those of you who don’t show are taking advantage of our terrific Trails and Pleasure Division and tracking your miles. You can win prizes without even setting foot in the show arena!

We lost a true treasure to WSH and our division last month with the passing of Jole Birdsell. There really are no adequate words, so let me just say that we honor her memory and contributions to WSH. She touched so many lives for the better and our heartfelt sympathy and condolences go out to her family.

Remember to enjoy your Arab friends no matter what you do, because the most important thing is the love we all share for these majestic creatures. For more information regarding the Arabian Horse Division, please contact Division Director Kathy Norton at [email protected].

PRAIRIE ZONE Willie Hansen - Reporter

Wow! Prairie Zone has had quite the ride this year! We started out with 11 mem-

bers in the book and we will finish out the year with close to 40. Out of the 25+ new members, all are active with events. We finished up with 6 young people

completing their first year of Youth Merit; three of which broke the 300 point

level and the other three are close behind. They are a very active and fun bunch

of little people to be around and it has truly been my pleasure to be involved with them this year. We have several potential new members for Youth Merit

already in the wings for this next year and all of our current ones are ready and

rearing to get going on Book #2. Several, along with their parents are planning to attend Convention this year to become more involved at the State level as well

as at the Zone level and I have parents ready and willing to help out. Youth Merit

members completing their first year successfully are Delany Johnson, Kennedy

Martin, and Melody Hackworth (all with over 300 points); Emily Brant, Savanah Price, and Aubrey McManus (all with over 200 points).

We have two in the Working Horse Division this year (Cheryl Hayward and Tina

Hackworth) only doing Zone level but planning on competing at the State level next year. We have several doing Performance, many having signed up at our

shows. We had everyone that was riding sign up for Trails and Pleasure also

since they were putting time in on their horses anyway, they might as well get

credit for it. This has been a "getting the feet wet" year for most of us but every-one has had so much fun this year that they are lining up for next year al-

ready. We gained several gamers, too. Thanks to all the games shows that the

OREC group put together over in Grays Harbor and next year, we hope to have

WSH-approved games shows with OREC and a local WSH games club. The interest is here, we just need to provide the playground.

The OREC open horse show series that South Sound Saddle Club (a WSH 100%

Club) co-sponsored is in the books, along with our overall champions, and reserve Champions, and we could not be more proud of them. We drew entries

from Wishkaw to Maple Valley and all points in-between and even though our

turnout was small, we had a great time. For our first time out, everyone had to

look us over and see what kind of facility we had to offer. It went well and we had several say they would definently be back next year, with friends. We can't wait.

Our Overall Hi Points were Walk/Trot - Champion Jennifer Warboy on Williams Gift, Reserve Danika Spence on Midnight, 13 and Under - Champion Melody

Hackworth on Vango, Reserve Layne Martin on Eros Tie, 14 to 17 - Champion

Noah Martin on Gottcha Big Time, Reserve Payton Pekola on ZipBack Cadillac, 18

and Over - Champion Julie Osina on Pass sum Taquila, Reserve Tahlea Hutchinson on Silk Air. Overall High Point went to Noah Martin and Gottcha

Big Time.

Invitations will be going out shortly to all Prairie Zone and OREC members for

our joint Year End Achievement Party. It is being planned for October 29th at the OREC Center in Oakville with a definite Halloween flavor. The time is 1:00-4:00

p.m. with a luncheon and awards presentation to follow. Check your mail for

your invite and suggestions for food to bring. This is the time to round up your

friends that might want to come play with us next year and let them meet and greet the rest of us while you gain some bragging rights along the way. They

will be more than welcome. It's time to PARTY! See you at Convention!

HSD DIRECTOR SOUGHT At the 2015 WSH Convention, the Horse Show Division was given an ‘Extraordinary Exception’ by the WSH Board for 2016 to run the Horse Show Division by committee rather than a HSD Director. Since the ex-ception was only for 2016, the HSD Advisory Committee is currently accepting applications for the Director position for a two (2) year term. A complete list of the duties of the Horse Show Director can be found in the Horse Show Division rulebook, Rule 1, Section 5 (page 7). In addi-tion, the Pointkeeper position also needs to be filled. In applying for the Director position, specify if you are interested in accepting the Pointkeeper position as well. Resumes may be sent to Sherri Williams at either 7503 Lyons Ln - Yakima WA 98903 or emailed to [email protected]. Applications will be accepted until October 31, 2016. Selection of the new Director will be made at the 2016 WSH Convention in November during the Horse Show Division meeting.
