A Review in Pictures - 2014-2015Prepared for our AGM event on 12 October 2015

Global Education Derby (GED) is a not-for-profit charity with almost 25 years of experience helping teachers, youth workers and community educators.

We also work together with young people and the members of the local community to develop the thinking skills that we all need to make sense of a complex and rapidly changing world.

We run a wide range of projects with schools, youth and community groups and have many opportunities which people can join in.

We also run training courses ranging from CPD training for teachers, cultural and religious diversity training, to Aim Awards accreditations!

Our office is at 7 John Street, Derby.

We are situated on the first floor, abovethe Music Shed and Café Loco.

We have an open-plan team office and ameeting room, incorporating our very own music studio!

Here’s a little information about the work we have been doing over the 2014-15 period, and our plans for the year ahead …

BRITISH COUNCIL CONNECTING CLASSROOMS

This partnership enabled us to support a wide range of teachers to grasp the relevance of global citizenship for 21st century learners and build educational partnerships with schools overseas.

During 2015, GED coordinated the national Connecting Classrooms CPD programme in England .

We ran workshops and training sessions in the East Midlands area , on behalf of the British Council and liaised with other Development Education Centres to ensure that teachers were reached effectively.

During 2014-2015, GED delivered introductory and intermediate workshops to 192 teachers throughout the East Midlands.

• 976 participants engaged with face to face Connecting Classrooms sessions in 55 workshops across England between December 2014 and June 2015.

• 55 in-school workshops were facilitated, taking global citizenship direct to schools and maximising ‘whole school’ support.

• Six workshops were held in teacher training institutions to 168 pre-service teachers (included within the total 976).

MONEY POWER RESPECTMPR Derby is a youth project for Derby fundedby the Big Lottery.

This project has a core group of young people trained in the Global Youth Work framework Connect, Challenge, Change (CCC) and in youth work approaches.

The project aim is to break a cycle of exclusion and disengagement, and support the transition into responsible adulthood for 16-24 year-olds from disadvantaged areas of Derby.

Participants gain confidence and transferable skills through involvement in learning and creative activities, become peer mentors to others facing similar difficulties, and foster better relations with the wider community.

A cross-cutting theme to the project is how hip hop has moved from being about social change to being commonly-seen now as materialistic, misogynistic and violent.

COMMON GOALComic Relief funding ended in 2014, but GED continues to work with the schools and partner organisations involved.

•The project aims to support students to work collaboratively, increase confidence and develop leadership skills.

•It makes a valuable contribution to SMSC providing sporting activities through which young people from different communities can develop, trust, respect and understanding.

In 2014, we were guest of honour at a prestigious London event after being shortlisted for the London 2012 Diversity and Inclusion Award.

• Peer educator training with Year 12 students from Derby Moor Community Sports College. WE HAVE A 100% PASS RATE ON THIS LEVEL 1 AIM AWARDS QUALIFICATION!

• Two linking days with Year 7 students from Derby Moor and Springwell Community College and Year 5/6 students from Barrow Hill, with activities led by peer educators.

The project will commence again in January 2016 working with Year 10 students from Derby Moor and Springwell schools in the role of sports mentors.

Culture Train and Global Education Derby worked in partnership on this amazing project, which ended in May 2015.

REPPIN ENDZ

Reppin Endz Derby was a Heritage Lottery-funded project which used creative media and music to celebrate stories and memories of Derby parks: Osmaston Park, Chaddesden Park, Markeaton Park.

Everyone had a chance to share a memory, have a cup of tea, listen to other people's memories, and watch the process of putting memories to music. Interviews and film were collected and uploaded to the Reppin Endz exhibition website.

At the end of the project, a celebration event was held in Derby.

This three year Big Lottery-funded project started in January 2014, aiming to: Reduce the social and economic marginalisation of the Pakistani community in inner-city Derby.

OPENING OUT

Young people in secondary education are at the core of the project.

The programme will help participants academically as well as developing transferable skills for employment.

The project aims to create support for this process within the wider community of educators and parents through training and discussion events on the themes of religious and cultural diversity.

We are currently running Saturday youth sessions (in 6-weekly cycles) and Chai Mornings for the local community.

This enables us to develop, deliver and assess nationally accredited qualifications reflecting our methodology and ethos.

AIM AWARDS CENTREGlobal Education Derby is an “approved” centre for Aim Awards.

It is an exciting development, providing a pathway for individuals, organisations and ourselves to gain added value for our work together.

In 2014, we launched a new global citizenship project, funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.

Working with a core group of seven schools, we use our expertise in global citizenship to enhance the communication skills and leadership potential of secondary school students. In the long term, we believe that the project will support students to develop deeper thinking skills to engage effectively with the world around them.

OTHER VOICES

The project has the development of speaking and listening skills at its core. The idea is to train up a small group of students in each school as global ambassadors.

They will receive support to develop their own communication skills through participating in activities focusing on a global theme, eg human rights. Students have linked up across schools to explore identity and community through drama, sport and practical activities.
