Introduction The course aimed at integrating systems thinking into advisory processes in relating hands-on practice with sophisticated concepts in a joint learning process. The workshop itself was designed as an advisory process, applying and living the principles we are talking about. The process was a typical one in the sense that it was planned and at the same time not a straight forward process, we went with the flow, we were curious about surprises, and we let the unexpected happen. We based the course on a solution focus, appreciative approach, combining a large variety of cognitive and intuitive learning occasions and complement our reflections with tools that facilitate our work in practice. Moderators: Ursula König, Ximpulse & Adrian Gnägi, SDC Laos Participants

Objectives Advising is about supporting others to develop their problem solving capacities. The necessary competencies for this will be improved through the training: Improve role reflection and role
definition: Trainees get to know concepts underlying advising and learn how to analyze advisory settings. They understand the dynamics in frequent advisory role constellations and are able to reflect their own behaviour in those constellations. They practice their skills to communicate about advisory role constellations and to negotiate role definitions in which they feel at ease and effective.
Upgrade action repertoire: Trainees reflect on advisory processes they experienced as difficult, especially on perception differences and communication results. They conceptualize alternative approaches and practice them to enlarge their action repertoire in difficult advisory settings.
Identify personal limits and potentials: Trainees receive feedback and reflect on their current strengths and weaknesses as advisors. They deepen their understanding of their personal limits as advisors, but they also become better aware of their individual resources and potentials.
Get to know tools and methods: Trainees learn to conceptualize an advisory process from start to end (context assessment, task clarification, negotiation of roles and definition of relationships, interaction phases, evaluation). They get to know tools and methods especially suited for their role as thematic advisors in networks, for peers and for partners (virtual advising/working on the phone, experience capitalization and advising, learning methods and advising).
Learn to approach and deal with complex social systems: Exchange experiences on Partner and Policy Dialogue (practice) and combine that with a reflection on Advising and Systemic Concepts to reframe current projects; and get creative ideas for improvement.

Proceedings Day 1:
• Ice-Breaker: Each participant asked to identify his/her strength in an
advisory process. (see picture of the “profiles”) & the importance of the focus on resources for our work. Some responses:
o “I am a good listener” o “I am positive” o “I come to the point” o “I am clear in communication” o “I integrate different opinions”
• General discussion on typical situations and dynamics encountered
o Dynamics of hierarchy and power e.g., through knowledge. Important to balance hierarchy in communication
o Transaction theory: Healthy relation / communication if both partners are on the “Adult level”
