Channel called “From the Edge With Peter Lik”. The documentary followed Lik on his journey around America in search of his “perfect shots” and lasted for one season.

ROUTE TO PHOTOGRAPHY

• Lik’s first photograph was taken when he was eight

years old after he received a Kodak Brownie box camera from his parents for his birthday

• His practice of photography continued through his childhood when he would take his camera on family vacations

• As he got older, he ventured out of the city and took road trips out into the “wilds of Australia” usually with his friend and “fellow photographer” Michael Plumridge

• Lik was self-taught in his photography skills

MEDIUMS USED AND UNIQUE TECHNIQUES

• A Linhof 617 Technorama camera with FujiFilm is used for taking panoramas

• For digital works, Phase One and Nikon cameras are typically used

• Lik prints most of his photos on FujiFlex silver-halide paper to increase the light sensitivity and glow to emphasize the bright colors in the print

FAVORITE SUBJECT MATTER

• One of Lik’s favorite places to photograph is Antelope Canyon located in Arizona

• Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon carved out by flowing water throughout millions of years

• This is where Lik photographed his record breaking picture “Phantom”, which sold for $6.5 million in 2014.

• These pictures have helped make society interested in photography again. They have also set the bar for other photographers in their works. Lik’s lack of popularity in the world of photographers matched with his success in the world of collectors has caused many to realize that popularity doesn’t directly correlate with greatness.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

• I chose Peter Lik to research him and his work because he photographs the same type of works that I have an interest in. He chooses to primarily photograph nature, which is something I tend to do as well. Lik makes it a point in his works to accentuate the vibrant colors of nature and make them the focal point of his photographs. Personally, I like his photographs and appreciate his works.
