Jay is one of those rare people who finds himself as much at home in a primitive campsite on the Serengeti as he is in a big city. He’s won a Pulitzer, journalism’s biggest prize, and has completed more than 25 photo assignments for National Geographic Society. Jay’s pretty much done it all — lived in a Stone Age village in Papua New Guinea for three months, spent a week in a nuclear sub under the Arctic and escaped from a sinking boat on the Amazon River. In between adventures, he’s traveled the world capturing wildlife with breathtaking photos. He’s also a lecturer, author and teacher. Jay was also named one of Travel + Leisure magazine’s “10 Fascinating People You Can Travel With in 2017.”

Jay has been an Olympus Visionary since 2003. Here’s why in his own words:

“My world as a photographer is about travel and quality gear. The Olympus OM-D system is designed exactly for my needs. The compact size, weatherproof design and image quality are amazing in my OM-D E-M1 Mark II. It’s a constant companion in my work.”

Enough said.

WHEN IT COMES TO WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY, JAY DICKMAN IS THE KING OF THE JUNGLE.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE.

First things first: You can’t take a great wildlife shot unless you know where to find wildlife. Here are some accessible places that are ideal for learning how to start capturing great shots.

Your local zoo is a good place to practice. Zoo animals love performing for visitors, and that means a chance to catch a meaningful moment like a yawn or a lion licking a cub.

You can get great shots close to home. There are 562 wildlife refuges, 38 wetland districts and 58 national parks in the country. Start exploring.

To get the best photos of wildlife, you have to know where to find them. Check out animal tracking websites to help you understand the migratory patterns of certain species. It helps you be in the right place at the right time. For example, fall mating season is a great time to photograph moose and elk.

JAY’S TOP PLACES TO TAKE WILDLIFE PHOTOS:

There are plenty of wildlife organizations that have insider knowledge. Call one up and ask to tag along during an outing. Offer to shoot photos for their website.

KNOW YOUR SUBJECT. Use the internet to pull together as much research as you can about an animal’s behavior so you’ll be in the best position to take the best shots.

BE PATIENT. You might have to wait all day for a single split second of action. But when you get the shot, it will all be worth it.

SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF. Make sure the batteries are charged, your memory cards are formatted, and the previous days’ images are downloaded. You don’t want something small to mess up a big shot.

TRAVEL LIGHT.The beauty of the E-M1 Mark II is that you don’t need a tripod for daily shooting. Built-in image stabilization compensates for all types of hand movement, so you can stay more nimble and mobile.

BE READY. A weatherproof camera like the E-M1 Mark II and M.Zuiko PRO lenses let you focus on your subject and ignore the rain and snow.

BE PREPARED. Carry two cameras: one with a wide-angle zoom lens and the other with a long zoom lens. You won’t fumble around to switch a lens and miss your shot.

FAST LENSES. They’re critical for wildlife photography. You’re often shooting in the early morning or late in the day, and that usually means low light situations. You need wide aperture lenses that perform great in dimly lit settings.

USE A FAST UHS-II CARD. It needs at least 300 MB/s speed. Slow, unreliable memory cards are a waste of money because they’re a sure way to miss a split-second shot.

SHOOT IN RAW. It provides approximately two additional stops of dynamic range and gives you many more options in post-production.

GET PORTABLE. Heavy DSLRs and big lenses can weigh you down and limit your mobility. The OM-D system is compact, portable and helps you react quickly to wildlife.

Think of an OM-D camera as a DSLR that went on a diet, lost weight and shrunk a few sizes. OM-Ds are one-third of the weight of a flagship DSLR and half the size. For wildlife photographers like Jay Dickman, the OM-D E-M1 Mark II means not having to be exhausted from lugging around big lenses and a bulky body.

The E-M1 Mark II is packed with technology to handle the challenges that come with photographing wildlife. It has an industry leading, in-body 5-Axis Image Stabilization System to compensate for camera shake and ensure sharp images in tough shooting conditions. An accurate Dual Autofocus system combined with continuous shooting speeds of up to 60 frames per second makes quick work of photographing fast-moving wildlife.

The camera is just one part of a continually expanding system with 25 lightweight and compact lenses plus accessories. As your interest in wildlife photography — or photography in general — grows, the OM-D system grows with you.

PROTECTS ITSELF FROM BAD WEATHER.

Lousy weather often takes you by surprise. The E-M1 Mark II has you covered. It’s splashproof, dustproof and freezeproof [down to 14˚F / -10˚C]. There’s no need to carry protective gear, so you can focus on keeping an eye on wildlife instead of watching out for your camera.

Page 16: PHOTOGRAPHING MOTHER NATURES WILD SIDE · campsite on the Serengeti as he is in a big city. He’s won a Pulitzer, journalism’s biggest prize, and has completed more than 25 photo

COMPACT WITH SUPERB IMAGE QUALITY. Do you really want to walk through woods, mountain trails, or a park looking for wildlife while carrying big lenses and a bulky camera? Let the E-M1 Mark II set you free. Its compact body and small, lightweight lenses deliver faster performance than any DSLR camera and lens. You’ll have greater freedom of movement to capture better photos.

WILDLIFE CAN MOVE FAST. KEEP UP. The speed of an E-M1 Mark II blows away DSLR cameras. You can capture up to an astounding 60 frames per second (fps) in S-AF and 18 fps in C-AF Tracking using the silent electronic shutter. With the mechanical shutter, you can achieve speeds of 15 fps in S-AF and 10 fps in C-AF Tracking. All ideal for rapid-fire shooting when you need it.

TECHNOLOGY HAS REPLACED THE TRIPOD. Leave your tripod behind with in-body 5-Axis Image Stabilization. This industry leading system adjusts for all types of camera movement to provide 5.5 stops of compensation. It’s ideal for capturing sharp handheld shots in super-telephoto or low light settings. You’ll have the freedom to react to fast-moving subjects.

PRECISE AUTOFOCUSING. Photographing an animal moving at top speed requires incredibly fast and accurate autofocus. The E-M1 Mark II’s Dual FAST Autofocus system features 121 points of Phase Detection plus Contrast Detection AF. Each cross-type AF point delivers superior detection of horizontal and vertical lines, giving you superior accuracy.

Page 18: PHOTOGRAPHING MOTHER NATURES WILD SIDE · campsite on the Serengeti as he is in a big city. He’s won a Pulitzer, journalism’s biggest prize, and has completed more than 25 photo

TOP TECH TIPS FOR PHOTOGRAPHING WILDLIFE WITH AN E-M1 MARK II.Presenting a few convenient tips from Jay Dickman to help you make the most of the advanced technology you’ll have at your fingertips. Think of it as a quick guide to the right settings for bringing home some stunning wildlife photos.

01.

02.

USE THE AUTO-ISO SETTING. The trinity of exposure is shutter speed, aperture and ISO. By using Auto-ISO, you can choose your other settings while the camera automatically figures out the ISO. It’s perfect for ensuring proper exposure for that split-second shot.

SHOOT IN SHUTTER PRIORITY MODE. Make sure your shutter is set at the best speed for what you’re trying to photograph by using Shutter Priority Mode. To freeze fast-moving wildlife, set your shutter speed to a quick 1/2500th sec.

06.

SET TO SEQUENTIAL SHOOTING LOW. Up your odds of capturing that exact moment you’ve been waiting hours for. The E-M1 Mark II’s Sequential Shooting Low Mode provides up to 18 fps while constantly adjusting the autofocus for movement in the frame. You’ll stand a much better chance of nailing your shot.

USE BACK BUTTON AUTOFOCUS.Activating this setting turns the back button into the autofocus button (so the shutter button won’t engage the AF). Wildlife can move very quickly, so you want as much control over autofocus as possible.

OL

YM

PU

S

1 9 /

USE THE 9-POINT AF TARGET. Choose the 9 AF points in the center of the frame, because that’s where you’ll typically position wildlife in your image.

KEEP YOUR FINGER ON THE EXPOSURE COMPENSATION DIAL. Lighting conditions can quickly change, especially when shooting outdoors. Keep your finger on the exposure compensation dial conveniently located at the front of the E-M1 Mark II, so you can lighten or darken your image.

so you can send your wildlife photos to your smartphone or tablet. From there, your photos can be uploaded to your favorite social media site in a minute or two. All you need is our free Olympus Image Share app for your smart device. Let’s get started.

Jay Dickman has been exclusively shooting with Olympus for years. One reason is because the OM-D system is extremely lightweight and easy to pack. But mostly because the system’s speed and versatility let the OM-D outperform big, bulky DSLRs. Here’s a look at what Jay has in his gear bag. He usually carries two camera bodies so he’s always ready while on assignment.
