Why take the Library seriously

"On average those who gained a first-class honours degree borrowed twice as many items and logged into MetaLib (to access e-resources) over three times as much as those who achieved a third-class degree." —Dave Pattern, University of Huddersfield, interviewed in Cilip’s Library and Information Gazette, 2nd September 2010

Introduction

It is very tempting to go straight to the internet when you have a project to research.

You can glean lots of useful information from Google but where does it come from?

By using more books and journals for your research, you can be sure that material you are using comes from a sound academic background.

Page 5: Photography feb2015

Adding some local colour

In order to get a more complete vision of your subject, you will be searching not only for books about, or by the photographer, but also books covering the culture, politics, art, philosophy etc. of the period.

Using Databases - Combining

keywords

When using the databases, remember you must use keywords – you can’t put in whole sentences!

Combine your keywords together with ‘and’ to narrow your search.

Eg. Photograhers and punk rock or Rock Music

Photography and memory

Photography and meaning
