WHAT IS A PHOTOGRAPH?
Scientific Answer
A photograph is an image that is created when light hits a light sensitive
surface. It is stored on film that is coated in gelatin that contains silver
halide or on an electronic device.
Artistic Answer
It is a way of capturing a single snap shot in time.
THE FIRST CAMERA
The first camera was a pinhole camera which is a
light proof box which has a hole in one side that
allows light to pass through this causes an
inverted image on the opposite side of the box.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
Nicéphore Niépce added plate coated with
Bitumen of Judea, a naturally occurring
asphalt. The asphalt hardened in bright light
and the dim parts of the picture stayed soft
and could be wiped away.
1800’S
Photography was made popular by Joseph Nicéphore de Niepce most of
the photographs where produced in black and white because this was
the cheapest option for the people.
1900’S
In the 1900’s colour cameras became portable and readily available.
Cameras were so easily transported that they were used in both ww1
and ww2. Some examples of portable cameras are the Argus c3 and
polaroid model 20. the Argus c3 being available around the time of ww2.
EVENTS
Photography has been a major part of events in history:
• World War 1 : During world war 1 there were photographers like Ernest
brooks and John Brookes who took pictures from the frontline and were
regular soldiers that fought along the western front.
• World War 2: in world war 2 there were photographers like Eugene
Smith who showed the dangers that soldiers faced.
• During the south African apartheid photographers like Peter Dejong
Showed the battle between the different members of society.
CAMERAS
A film camera works by having light pass through a converging lens
(causes light to go towards a single point) it is then recorded on film or
an electronic device called an electronic sensor.
It has a shutter that controls the amount of light that hit the film or sensor.
The shutter speed can be controlled allowing for a varied amount of
light in.
FILM
Film is a strip of plastic film that is layered
with a gelatin that contains light sensitive
silver halide. When exposed to the light
the surface darkens but is a long
process. This is why there is a short
exposure time so a small chemical
change happens.
ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY
Abstract photography focuses more of form, colour and
curves than is does on detail
Some abstract photos are not in focus
Abstract photos come in a variation of patterns, textures,
crop, shape and blur
POP ART
Pop art is an art moment that started in the U.K during the mid 1950’s which
involves making pictures look like they are meant to be part of a comic
book.
It was made popular by photographers like Andy Warhol was probably the
most famous pop art photographer and artist. He was the pioneer of
popular culture and explored the relationship between artistic
expression, celebrity culture, advertising and mass production, all of
which flourished in the 1950’s and 1960’s. One of his most famous
pieces was a series of portraits of Marilyn Monroe.
