You are taking on a new persona you have stepped into the shoes of a famous photographer. You will explore their life and the way that they approach picture taking. Through an exploration of the photographers work you will take on the task of shooting film to emulate their style. You will discover who this person was or is, what they photographed, and how they their achieved their pictorial aesthetic. You will be working on your own so as a class we can learn about as many photographers as possible.

Your tasks are to choose a photographer that you are interested in and begin researching their life and their work. You will be creating a power point presentation that has a brief biography of the artist, between 6 and 10 pieces by the artist, and 3 or 4 images that you shot that emulate the style of the artist. You will be giving a 6-7 minuet presentation that informs the class about your artist, the artists style and compare your photographs to the artist to show the class how you were able to achieve their style. You will have 3 weeks to complete this project.
The final product of this process will be a power point presentation

to explore. 6. Shoot your film in the style of the artist7. Develop and print your images. 8. Scan your completed images onto the computer9. Begin creating a power point presentation about your artist.

This was adapted from a lesson done at Preston Junior High, parts of it were changed to make it appropriate for high school students. This lesson is designed to allow students to explore the work of famous photographers. In looking at work of professionals it will allow the students to determine what type of photography appeals to them. This lesson should also allow students to evaluate their own work, in comparison to the artist of their choice.

This lesson is designed for a high school level photography class, it involves basic photography skills, research, and the creation of a power point presentation. This lesson can be adapted for other grade levels, by making the amount of information and number of photos required less. The learners will need to know how take pictures, develop film, use dark room techniques to print their images, how to research and create a power point presentation.

This lesson allows students to think critically about the art work that they are producing, and relating it to another artist. The students will also have to be think creatively in order to emulate the images of another artist. The students will have to be able to identify the themes in the artist work to be able to recreate the same feeling. In the analysis of their work they will have to compare what they produce to the work of the artist they are emulating.

This lesson will probably take three weeks to complete the project and a week for presentations. It will take about a week for the students to shoot and develop their film, a week to print all of their images, about a week to do the research and create their presentations and a week to give presentations, it might be good to spread out the presentations and begin working on another project while the students are presenting. Prior to teaching this lesson it might be helpful to expose students to a variety of artists so they have a feel for what is available to them.
The lesson will take a few class periods in the computer lab, to allow the students to research a variety of artists. Each student should have a different artists, so the class learns about a variety of artists.

The WebQuest model is best suited for learners who can navigate the Web on their own and can read the kinds of material commonly found on the Web. We can stretch the format to reach primary-aged learners, developmental English Language Learners and special populations by creating a facilitated WebQuest, one that requires an adult or older peer to drive things.
When you begin the lesson reserve time in the computer lab, give the students the first part of the class to look at a few artists and decide which ones they are interested in. Allow each student to sign up for their artists without duplicates. Give them time to research and begin creating their presentations. At the end of the class tell them to shoot their roll of film in the style of that artists. The next class will be spent developing film. Give them a week to get their prints finished. They will need another session in the computer lab to scan in their images and write their comparisons. I would begin a new project and have the students present a few projects per day.
